To tell my friend I don't want her "birthday gift"?

Three weeks ago my friend asked me to look after her 2 hamsters whilst her house was being decorated.
I have never had hamsters and I don't really like them but she was desperate for someone to look after them so I said yes.
When she has asked how they are I have been positive "oh they are fine don't worry we are getting on great" etc etc
Today is my birthday ..she rings me
As my gift to you I'm letting you keep the hamsters ...
So I said "oh no don't be silly,I've enjoyed having them but they belong to you"
She replied .."no no I insist ..."
I don't want them
Aibu to say no ?
I think she just can't be arsed with them anymore tbh

Don't hide with 'it wouldn't be fair on them'. How about 'it's not fair on me to give me random animals I didn't ask for'. Cheeky friend :-/

Isisiris · 19/01/2021 12:48

I'd try find a good home for them..there are some fab hamster rescue rehome pages on fb for example. It isnt their fault she doesnt want them, poor things :(
What sort of hamsters?

Isisiris · 19/01/2021 12:50

To those who say they cant be kept together, absolutely true with Syrians but some other breeds can cohabit. Not always but can sometimes.

WeAreShiningStars · 19/01/2021 14:17

Have you returned them OP?

Bambam2019 · 19/01/2021 14:25

So she dresses it up as her doing you a favour. God I hate that, makes you feel like you have to say yes otherwise somehow you’re being Ungreatful....to her....??
Please just say no. Though I know it’s easier said than done sometimes, even if it is just to a friend about hamsters!

EarthWonderer · 19/01/2021 15:58

@Puzzledandpissedoff

She’s probably realised it’s a boy girl mix and you are about to have 20

Grin Grin

OP, you could always post them back through her letterbox ...? (Only joking)

You've just reminded me of the very same thing that happened some years ago now. I'd gone to my local pet shop to buy food for my rabbits when I saw a tiny hamster darting at speed behind the feed sacks stacked on the floor. Told the pet shop owner who replied that this hamster, along with several others had been running around the shop floor when he arrived that morning, and that he'd managed to catch all but this one.

He said that it was the second time this had happened, that someone had posted them through the letterbox overnight - rather than just bring them to him safely in a box.

The first time it happened, one of the hamsters was injured badly enough to need taking to the vet to be put to sleep. Some people are just sick.

this is so cruel and sad... people are vile 🌺

riceuten · 19/01/2021 17:19

No.

And I guess the next installment will be that she will refuse to take them back, or threaten to have them killed or guilt trip you into taking them.

Emcolmol · 19/01/2021 17:25

What a cheeky bitch!!!! I’d just dump them in her porch ring the bell and walk away!!!! Some people are unbelievable 😡

isitsafetocomeoutyet · 19/01/2021 17:28

Pictures please...!

Unhelpful I know. But urgh what a cf. let us know your vague location op and I'm sure if anyone's nearby we can dm you. Poor things

Pinotwoman82 · 19/01/2021 17:31

Did you give them back!

Yogalola · 19/01/2021 17:32

That’s bad, you must tell her that you didn’t mind looking after them for a short time but you don’t want them forever.

Misty78 · 19/01/2021 17:32

Hahaha cheeky cow, someone said dump them on her door step ring the bell then leg it, but add a note to the cage, saying you've changed their names ones cheeky the other is twat

BusyEmz · 19/01/2021 17:32

😂😂Laughed so hard at this!!! If you don’t go drop her hamsters back to her right now. She’s bang out of order. 😂😂 tell her to donate them to a school or something!!

Sparkletastic · 19/01/2021 17:32

Tell her you'd rather have a scented candle.

pepsirolla · 19/01/2021 17:35

DON'T return them, she clearly has no empathy. They are living creatures , not a pair of shoes she lent you! Please contact a rescue. Vets often have lists of rehomers and national hamster council may help too. I would seriously be reconsidering a friendship with someone who has such a callous disregard for animal welfare and your feelings too. Do you really need such a thoughtless self-centered person in your life? Best of luck

StargazerAli · 19/01/2021 17:38

Cheeky sod! Put them in her doorstep and send her a text.

SilverStarburst · 19/01/2021 17:41

Are you hamster-free, OP? Can't believe that someone would be so cheeky!

starfishmummy · 19/01/2021 17:42

Bringing back memories. Guy came to door and asked for my housemate, she was out so he gave me a bix for her - a box with noises from within. It was a mouse. Turned out she was expecting it (thank goodness) and popped it in the cage with the mouse she already had. What she was not expecting was that the next morning the rather fat new mouse had produced babies....

Rothers77 · 19/01/2021 17:42

Haha. A gift of unsolicited hamsters. You're definitely not being unreasonable. Most people give vouchers or a bottle of wine as a birthday gift.
Keep yer flipping hamsters, or the cat'll get 'em.

JBo2 · 19/01/2021 17:43

@fluffedup

She's a CF and deserves to be told 'I don't want your fucking hamsters'.

But they're living creatures, if you make her take them back she may neglect them, or at best feed them, clean them but never take them out of the cage.

So I think I'd contact any local animal re-homing centres and find them a home with someone who actually wants them.

Then never do her a favour again, you never know what she'll try to give you next.

I second this
SunshineCake · 19/01/2021 17:43

Classic? Low bar.

Not funny. Not entertaining. Not informative.

And this x
RCats · 19/01/2021 17:44

No I don't think so. Any kind of animal is a HUGE commitment and if you don't really want them you shouldn't feel forced to keep them.

Kittykat93 · 19/01/2021 17:45

No one would be this cheeky.. surely ??
