To ask what winds you up even though you know it’s irrational

Lighthearted (I think!)

A few things popped into my head today which irrationally annoy me and I figured I can’t be the only one who gets irrationally angry about stuff like this

Those I can think of now are

  • People who say ‘I don’t drive’ when they actually can’t drive - you wouldn’t say you ‘don’t perform brain surgery’ if you can’t so why is it different with driving
  • People with double barrelled / hyphenated first names, eg, Peggy Sue - I’ve never heard one that doesn’t sound twee and they just make me think of weird American cults
  • people who still have their Christmas trees up

I realise none of these things actually affect me - they just annoy me! 😂

What winds you up?

I say that I don’t drive rather than I can’t drive because I can drive (in that I have taken lessons, know how to do it and am physically capable) but chose not to pursue getting a licence. ‘Don’t’ being a choice whereas ‘can’t’ being a case of ability.

I agree with Americanisms. I am constantly correcting my DP for pronouncing ‘new’ as ‘noo’, he’s recently come out with stove and nightstand instead of hob and bedside table as well Angry

But you legally ‘can’t’ drive as you haven’t passed your test

It’s fine for people who have passed their test to say they ‘don’t’ drive as it is then a choice like saying you don’t drink or you don’t eat meat

Not that my opinion will make any difference to what people say! 😂 But it still grates on me!

Clicking on a link when the page hasn't finished loading so it jumps up slightly and sends you somewhere different.

Accidentally stepping on my own shoelaces and undoing them. This makes me incandescent - for no reason.

@TiddyTid

People
I think that’s the crux of it! 😂

@inspiration101

Lorraine Kelly, irrational I know but the sight or sound of her absolutely grates on me. I have to turn over as soon as I hear her voice.
Ditto Katherine Ryan, and the squeaky North American voice in general, but Ryan especially, Yes, love, you have a vaginia, you refer to it on every occasion, it doesn't make you special.
Bl3ss3dm0m · 18/01/2021 14:07

People who say "go on then, you've twisted my arm" or something similar, when you have just offered them something nice, like a cake, an alcoholic drink, chocolate etc. No, I didn't twist your arm, talk you into it, cajole you, or anything else; I offered you it once, in a reasonably neutral tone of voice, you know that you shouldn't be eating or drinking it because you are on a diet, or diabetic or something (I didn't know, or I wouldn't have offered it in the first place!), so don't put the blame on me when you have no will, power!

PattyPan · 18/01/2021 14:14

I can on private land or with someone in the car who has passed their test! But I don’t Wink

My dogs (labs) who follow me around in the kitchen when I am preparing a meal hoping I am going to drop a molecule of food. One day I shall trip over them and then they can eat me as I lie unconscious.

Snackz · 18/01/2021 14:25

The new Asda adverts...

Snackz · 18/01/2021 14:26

@labrador73 Typical lab! Ours does the same. 🤣

Iamnotminterested · 18/01/2021 14:27

Old people choosing a vanilla cornet from ice-cream vans. Always vanilla.

CheckYoSelf · 18/01/2021 14:54

@Mowly75

Commenting "beautiful family" or "gorgeous family" on completely run of the mill photographs of people & their kids on social media.

It really grinds my gears. Such smug fuckery. Ooh you've managed to reproduce & share your very average genes well done.

Very rarely post pics of DD on social media but my DP posted one of all of us on his recently & someone commented just that & I wanted to ask WHY just WHY. I mean we're not dog ugly but FFS hardly merits that level of enthusiasm. Wow that was cathartic.

I think I love you Grin

The fat woman in the green top who’s invaded MN again- I thought we’d seen the back of her!

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

People who chat to their dogs while they are out a walk as though they are a human, and its usually ways giving them a telling off like a child.

People who stand right up next to you, in a queue. I've had People actually standing touching me, and if you move forward they follow!

MN specific: so many things but a new one is people telling people to "🎵 let it go 🎵" or chanel Elsa 🙄 they seem to think its hilarious, or witty. It's not.

I do this Grin I do realise I sound demented but I really can't help it !

Markies · 18/01/2021 15:02

That nobody on here can just say hello to people, it’s always a ‘cheery hello.’ 🙄

PerpendicularVincent · 18/01/2021 15:05

I can't bear attention seeking posts on Facebook.

Stuff like 'i know who my REAL friends are' without any explanation, posts boasting about how great they are for losing weight/being a keyworker and 'happy heavenly birthday X'.

They all seem designed to elicit sympathy or compliments, and it leaves me cold. I'd far rather a friend ask for support - I'd happily give it.

I've hidden someone who regularly posts stuff like 'this little lady has just been asked by the CEO to cancel her annual leave, I must be doing well' and 'this little lady has been nominated by a family member for an award'.

I also hate radio station phone ins.

grumpymacgrumpface · 18/01/2021 15:10

@HoobleDooble

Young people on quiz shows who use "It's before my time!" as a reason for not knowing something. I can name the wives of Henry VIII but I wasn't actually there you tit!
But sometimes that's in answer to questions on popular culture - I too can name all the wives of Henry VIII but ask me about the Inkspots and it's definitely before my time.
PerpendicularVincent · 18/01/2021 15:13

Also people who go on overseas property programmes and don't buy a house because they 'need to do the numbers and look at it again in a few months'. Shouldn't you have done that beforehand?!

eatingfor2drinkingfor0 · 18/01/2021 15:16

Not being able to edit a post after you have written it!

Oreservoir · 18/01/2021 15:24

People, usually older, who send personal replies in the comments stream on Facebook as if it’s a private conversation.
I’m looking at you dm!

People who take a huge portion of food, eat it really fast and then proceed to finish up leftovers when I’m not even halfway through my small portion.

People who use quite or very in front of unique. My family find my screaming at presenters on tv, who frankly should know better, hilarious.

tnetenba · 18/01/2021 16:13

People asking if I can eat fish or can eat chicken instead of just asking if I eat them. Of course I can, I just don’t.

Brought instead of bought.

All hashtags, even worse if people say hashtags out loud #blessed. Also included is people who say confused.com.

The sisters on gogglebox in the intro when they say ‘THC that’s what’s gets you stoned’ together.

@TheCap & @Keeping2ChevronsApart
You can normally pop that grate section out from the top of the cutlery basket so you’re them just left with a sectioned cutlery basket.

Stove is not an Americanism. It’s what we used to call a cooker !
GoLightlyontheEarth · 18/01/2021 16:21

@NotBrigitteBardot

Creeping Americanisms - Mac n cheese is the worst - no, it’s macaroni cheese, it’s a traditional British dish . Vaccine is pronounced VACcine but now TV news presenters are starting to say vacCINE because that’s how the Americans say it. Similarly Cap Verde (Portuguese, final e is pronounced) has become (American) Cape Verd, and Haiti (2 dots over the first i to show that you pronounce both vowels separately, French - High-eaty) has become American (Hatey). Also ordering ‘the’ In restaurants - it really annoys me but I still find myself saying ‘I’ll have THE soup’. We don’t do it in cafes though. Passed as in died. Passed away is a traditional way of avoiding saying what actually happened if you don’t want to say died or dead, but passed? Always makes me think of bodily functions. What did he pass - a kidney stone?
Agree with all these!
PattyPan · 18/01/2021 16:24

@GoLightlyontheEarth sure for something old fashioned or a camping stove. Calling a hob the stove/stovetop is different.
