In Halfords this week getting essential car stuff...and had a look at the bikes. I was a bit taken aback to see these ladies bike names from the Apollo brand. Entice & Virtue. There was also Jewel.

AIBU ? If so, any suggestions who to shout to about it

The male equivalents were slant, phase and evade.

@FoxyTheFox

So how does anything change and get better if no challenges casual sexism?
Exactly!

How sexist is it that the mens bike is called evade, clearly playing on the stereotype of men only getting a bike to escape thier wife

Wheresmykimchi · 17/01/2021 02:27

I get you, OP.

Sinful8 · 17/01/2021 02:29

@WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants

Entice - entice you to go for a ride Virtue - feeling virtuous when you've been for ride.

It's the name of a BIKE get over it FGS

Slant - a harsh prediction
GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/01/2021 02:35

Hmm, I wonder what you’d have thought of the ‘Pink Witch’ way back. Many of us would have killed for one of those. The young girl’s version of the E Type Jag.

feelingverylazytoday · 17/01/2021 02:42

@Singinginshower

I am genuinely horrified by the number of posters who think the OP is unreasonable.
I think many people just aren't interpreting these bike names in the same way as the OP, that's all. What's horrifying about that?
StarlightLady · 17/01/2021 04:09

Agree they are total rubbish names. It might even be worth putting it as the millionth thing to do something about on your to do list.

If l rode a bike called virtue, I’d probably get done under the Trades descriptions Act.

KathleenTurnerOverdrive · 17/01/2021 04:15

Be angry about the fact that all of them are absolute heaps of shit that will put women off cycling for life after one ride.

Marchitectmummy · 17/01/2021 06:45

Really couldn't care less about the names that put on a bike, children's bikes maybe more important. Do you honestly think your character, drive, ambitions are attributable to a bike name?

As others have said bikes aren't exclusive to one gender or the other. Don't you just choose the frame size and bike you want?

Eckhart · 17/01/2021 07:32
**@Eckhart* Do you think it's ok for boys clothes to have motorbikes and superheroes all over them, and girls clothes to have flowers and princesses? This is the same thing. Perhaps you can't see it because it's subtly different?*

To be absolutely honest...I don't really care if boys tops have superheroes on and girls tops have princesses. Sorry, but I think clothes are just clothes. Bikes are just bikes. People seem to actively seek to find offence in everything these days.
🤷‍♀️
Bit behind the times, there.

jamesfailedmarshmallows · 17/01/2021 07:39

They are crap names OP I agree. As a child my last bike was called Heather which really didn't suit it, and even back then I used to think the bike names were pathetic. I'm in need of a career change, I wonder how one breaks into the bike naming industry?

Stillgoings · 17/01/2021 07:46

Wow..Entice and Virtue are terribly sexist. I am really surprised that anyone would think otherwise and also that Halfords would think it was ok.

littlem133 · 17/01/2021 08:17

Have a look at the campaign Let Toys Be Toys

Goatinthegarden · 17/01/2021 08:40

I agree OP, absolutely awful. The names are vile.

In a slightly different vein, DH and I have (almost) identical, Trek ‘Remedy’ mountain bikes. Mine is the ‘women’s’ version in that it came with a female saddle and shorter stem. The frames are all black and exactly the same....except mine has a little minty green stripe on the frame, I wonder if it’s meant to help me feel more lady-like on my giant, rugged bike?

I also get really annoyed that outdoor gear designed for female anatomy (rucksacks, outdoor jackets, etc.) often come solely in putrid purples and pale greens.

NotMeNoNo · 17/01/2021 09:34

Of course it's trivial but these things add up. Someone sat in a room and thought these were a good idea. It's a bit like the Victorian names like Chastity and Prudence. It just seems unnecessarily behind the times. Although to be fair I expect they were thinking of the enticement and virtue of exercise.

Balhammom · 17/01/2021 09:38

Maybe just give it a break for 5 minutes and let girls be girls.

Most of us, and our children, are quite happy without being dragged into these silly, imaginary battles.

Deathgrip · 17/01/2021 09:39

Well we are going to have to Entice if men Evade, aren’t we? 🙄

Grim. You’ll always have people saying it’s unimportant but these things don’t exist in a vacuum.

cushioncovers · 17/01/2021 09:50

Entice - entice you to go for a ride
Virtue - feeling virtuous when you've been for ride.

So it should be equally ok to put these names on a bike designed for men then.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 17/01/2021 09:53

@Eckhart I am not behind the times at all. It doesn't make me any less intelligent than those of you who do see a problem with it.

Eckhart · 17/01/2021 09:55
@Eckhart I am not behind the times at all. It doesn't make me any less intelligent than those of you who do see a problem with it.
We disagree. Why you're defending your intelligence, I don't know.

FrostyChocolateMilkshake · 17/01/2021 09:58

@Eckhart because you're accusing me of "being behind the times", suggesting that I am dim-witted and not intelligent enough to understand gender-based issues/problems women are facing every day. I'm aware there are a lot of equality problems but I simply just do not see a problem with these bike names. There are far more pressing issues.
Let's agree to disagree now. Ta.

KezzabellaB · 17/01/2021 09:59

Do me a favour.... 🙄

Notyourcat · 17/01/2021 10:00

Very strange names OP YANBU.

The one that gets me is “Men Expert”. Appealing to every mansplaining neck beard who thinks he is superior. Eugh!

I didn't suggest you were dim witted or lacking in intelligence. You imagined that all by yourself.

But yes, let's agree to disagree. Unless you'd like the last word?

Skipsurvey · 17/01/2021 10:09

I see your point op.
write to halfords

Jetatyeovilaerodrome · 17/01/2021 10:14

Yes there are. Doesnt mean stuff like this isn't really shitty too.
