To not use the swipe up links that people use on insta because I don't want them to benefit from it?

So I don't usually buy things that I see bring advertised on Instagram...however...on the extremely odd occasion that I do. I absolutely categorically will not but it through their swipe up link because I hate the idea of them making money off of my purchase!! Is this ridiculous of me?? Do you do it? Do you use the swipe up links??

I use the swipe up links, would you really begrudge someone trying to make money to get by? They are just people at the end of the day

angelikacpickles · 16/01/2021 17:58

I use the swipe up if I like the person and I don't feel like they are just posting random links to get commission.

Mrs Hinch is a millionaire so she isn’t ‘Just trying to get by’ with her links. I agree I don’t want my shopping earning people commission.
Thegirlhasnoname · 16/01/2021 18:50

I go out of my way not to buy anything from swipe ups on insta. I get that some people give a story about how “it’s just a little bit that helps us buy ice cream for the kids” or some other sob story but it really grinds my gears how, more often than not, they are not marked as an ad/aff link.

Especially certain people of insta who will post eBay links every week because eBay gives good % of commission on affiliates but the cookies only last 7 days. Or somebody I follow has started swipe up for H&M and hasn’t explained that if you buy anything from there in the 30 days after swiping up then they will still get commission on it.

If the people were more open about how they work, I’d be more inclined to swipe up. As it is, I am not.

Jesus wept

This is some pathetic shit, why not use the link, they triggered you to want the item.

nolitetebastardescarborundo · 16/01/2021 18:51

Why would you go out of your way to stop them earning a few pence when they have actually brought your attention to the item that you now want in the first place? It seems very vindictive. I would just stop following them if you dislike them so much, it's not good for your health to get wound up by things this small. I can't possibly see what the issue would be with the swipe up earning if you have chosen to follow them and have decided to buy something that they recommend to you. It's not like it's coming out of your pocket.

DuzzyFuck · 16/01/2021 18:52

I've never ever clicked a 'swipe up' link but perhaps that's because I don't follow many 'influencer' types. Whenever I've bought from an Instagram ad it's been a sponsored one that's appeared on my main feed.

Ch3rish · 16/01/2021 18:55

I know we're all a little bored and maybe losing confidence but this can't be a serious question can it?Confused

You are certainly being a tad ridiculous to even need strangers to validate you on a total non issue

Swipe or don't totally up to you

thedevilinablackdress · 16/01/2021 18:58

I usually only see swipe up to buy links for things people make themselves.
I don't tend to follow I feel negatively towards to.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/01/2021 19:00

To be fair, you could say hundreds of threads on MN are non issues if you're personally not interested. Seems to odd to post on a thread simply to say that. For a non issue Grin

Niconacotaco · 16/01/2021 19:03

Someone always get paid. It could be Google or it could be someone from IG. You choose.

wonderup · 16/01/2021 19:08

I wouldn't use swipe ups but I don't follow influencers on insta. Hate cookies that stay on your computer too.

queenofSI · 16/01/2021 19:09

So petty Confused

wonderup · 16/01/2021 19:12

Thinking about it more if someone had bought my attention to an item that I was interested in & it the "review" was genuine then yes I would probably swipe up.

If someone was just posting random multiple ebay/amazon links that they would never have interest in then no but I wouldn't follow them.

Peanutbutterblood · 16/01/2021 19:34

I dont buy much from insta and dont follow many influencers but I was following one and saw something she was promoting, if I hadnt seen it on her page i wouldnt have seen it so i used the swipe up

ButtWormHole · 16/01/2021 19:34

I’m not a petty see you next Tuesday so of course I use their links

Glitteryone · 16/01/2021 20:07

YANBU!

Influencers need cancelled

SeriouslyConfusednamechanger · 16/01/2021 20:11

Depends who it is.

I use littlemissmops swipe ups and jottiesjournal.

Piffle11 · 17/01/2021 09:10

The way I see it, the influencer has brought the item it to my attention, so to speak. So I’m happy to use the link. I can never be bothered to trawl through sites looking for particular items, so if I see one posted that I like the look of, I’ll buy it. I have no problem with the person getting a little commission. I don’t think it’s always a case of a company sending someone a load of stuff, and then they advertise it on their sites… I don’t tend to follow people like that. I follow people who have similar tastes to me, who actually do their own shopping, and then arrange affiliate links with the company. So they are kind of putting in the the work, so to speak.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 17/01/2021 09:19

It's ridiculous. You obviously follow them enough to watch the stories so I don't see why you have problem with them making moneyConfused

CutToChase · 17/01/2021 09:24

Possibly the pettiest thing I have ever read on MN and that's saying something

Terracottasaur · 17/01/2021 09:26

Totally ridiculous. You’ve benefited from their recommendation but would go out of your way to deny them any recompense for that - why? It’s so petty and selfish.

scubadub · 17/01/2021 09:45

I don't think it's petty, I don't follow any major influencers to be honest. I follow mostly ppl whose work I find interesting etc or celebs I find funny. But what I don't like is that a celeb or someone will come on and be all casually talking about their skin care routine. Only to find that no they are not "just sharing" there is a tiny little @AD in the corner and they are banking on you wanting the product for them to make money. It's not their skin care routine at all...it's all a set up. That's what bugs me. As I said I think I have actually bought one thing that I saw on Instagram as I'm not an impulsive, oooh I've got to have that kind of person. And the one thing I did buy I was thinking of getting anyway.

OP posts:
Northernshepherd · 17/01/2021 10:08

I'm with you op. It's not as simple as them just bringing to your attention a product so why would you resent them commission. It's them manipulating their audience to buy a product that has likely been gifted to them or they are in a partnership with the company, or they get something out of it somehow. They are salespeople. Not all of them of course.

thedevilinablackdress · 17/01/2021 10:13

If you don't like people advertising stuff, don't follow them. There's plenty of interesting accounts on Instagram not selling anything
