To ask nursery to spell DD's name properly!?

DD is 3 and has a name which is commonly shortened - similar to Catherine being shortened to Katie/Katy.

We use her shortened name so that's not an issue but they keep using the 'ie' spells when we have always used the "y"

I mentioned it to her key worker last week and she said "oh, silly me!" - I noticed the next couple of pictures to come home had her 'full' name written on them. Yesterday she bought a craft home with "Katie" on. AAAAGGGHHH. DD 3 even said " spelt my name wrong again" so I can't imagine that our DD won't also have told them- she can write her name(s) but never the ie spelling! Hmm

WIBU to speak to the nursery manager on Monday and ask they use the same shortened version we do or just use her full name!?

(and yes, I know this is a first world problem of the highest order!)

I sort of get what everyone is saying, however it isn't her real name so surely a shortened version could be spelt any which way?

Lotsachocolateplease · 17/01/2021 10:05

Your dd will have this all her life. I have a similar name and even if I send an email and sign it with my preferred spelling I will get a reply with one the other types of spelling. It’s rude and annoying but I’ve lived with it for 45 years so expected now!
I also have friends that cannot spell my name correctly.........

saraclara · 17/01/2021 10:11

Nothing says "I don't care" quite like getting someone's name wrong...

I agree. If the mistake has been pointed out more than once and still someone who knows you/your child well continues to spell/pronounce the name 'their' way, then it says a lot about their attitude I think.

On eof my colleagues, when corrected (not by me) on the pronunciation of a pupil's name actually said "I don't care, it's easier to say (her version)". It actually wasn't any easier to say her version. She just didn't give damn.

Really?

So if you have adult colleagues or friends called Jennie, Becki and Vicci and you decide you prefer to spell them Jenny, Becci and Vicky, that’s fine and they just have to suck it up?

And Jo Biden - Joe’s not even a real name so I can spell it however I fancy?

callmeadoctor · 17/01/2021 13:44

Well, yes. It isn't their name on birth certificate after all. Its a shortened version of their "real" name. So how can you tell everyone that you would like your shortened name to be spelt? (genuine question, really not trying to be difficult)

I can’t believe you’d actually be rude enough in real life to tell someone they can’t choose how to spell their own name Hmm
AViewFromTheWindows · 17/01/2021 14:42

We had the opposite. ASD son always had his name shortened. He hated it. We offered the shortened version he liked which they refused to do as it wasnt on his birth certificate (nor was the shortened one he hated Hmm ) despite my friends children using their non birth certificate shortened name.

callmeadoctor · 17/01/2021 21:30

StaceySolomon, its not their own name though is it? Thats my point, its just a shortened or abbreviated.

Do you not understand what a name is Confused You haven't genuinely reached adulthood and missed the social convention that people tell you their name and how to spell it and you...er... just believe them? No one has ever asked me to prove my name with a birth certificate, and I have a name that has two common spellings.

So, Prince Harree - you can spell it like that? Or maybe you decide Harri is nicer? I mean it's not really his name is it so newspapers can write whatever they like.

Jo Biden, he should be going by Joseph, surely? And Bill Clinton - that's not his real name! Weird how all those world leaders manage to agree on the same spelling though Confused
Katy Perry - I think Catie is nicer. And Jesy Nelson - I'm going to spell it Jessie from now on.

This is going to really blow your mind - but some people go by a completely different name to the one on their birth certificate. Get this though - it is still their name Shock

Well you know, theres more things to get het up about in this world! We don't all have to agree fortunately Grin

DavidRose · 18/01/2021 09:22

Have to agree with callmeadoctor. The day I decided not to be bothered by this was a good day. Don't sweat the small stuff type thing for me and it works. I'll correct spelling on anything official but apart from that I just let it go and I'm ok with that.
