To want to tell DH his supper's in the dog?

78 replies

sesquipedalia · 15/01/2021 17:36

I made creamy smoked salmon and courgette pasta last night. DH asked what supper was tonight and I told him at was salmon curry. He complained that was 'Salmon two night in a row, can't we have something fun?'

Context: he's WFH full time in a stressful job. I'm WFH 4d a week and looking after DD2 who is part time at nursery. Otherwise I have to work around her and was up 2.5hrs before her this morning to get work done. I do all the housework, laundry and cooking from scratch and am having to be 'creative' as we're avoiding supermarkets and struggle to get deliveries. We live rurally, takeaways aren't an option.

AIBU to be a bit pissed off that he's unimpressed with tonight's menu??

Salmon curry is lovely. It's my favourite thing to cook when the dc aren't with me as none of them like it, which is fine & I don't make it when they're around as they wouldn't enjoy it.

However. You've cooked, that's what is on offer. If he doesn't like it, he can step up & cook something else tomorrow. & if he doesn't like this evening's dinner, no problem, he's an adult & can rustle up something for himself.

Bluntness100 · 15/01/2021 18:48

@Northernparent68

Yes, it’s a bit rude but are n’t you getting this out of proportion ? Can you really not understand why he’s stressed ?
Agree, and some of these comments

You’d think he told her to fuck off and stick it up her arse.

I’m not a big salmon fan either, I’d likely comment as said. Just becayse one of you takes on the cooking doesn’t mean you’ve no right to comment and should never have any say in what you eat.

Fucking hell.

PickAChew · 15/01/2021 18:49

@TheSpottedZebra

Hide it in his shoes. Then tell him to find his dinner. Exciting !
😂🤣

Nowt wrong with a salmon curry. It's only awful if you make it wrong.

AKissAndASmile · 15/01/2021 18:49

@IseeIsee

You gave the initial complaint and when many suggested that he should be doing something you started with the "he has a high stress job", "he is under pressure as responsible for lots of people", "he is on medication for high blood pressure" (probably his diet btw not stress) so essentially you have accepted that is how it is. You work and look after DD2 and do all home tasks and that's it. YABVU to moan about something you are happily doing. Why wouldn't he moan and want a different dinner when he can get away with it. Sure I would do the same myself if I thought all I would receive in response is a bit of a whinge.
Absolutely! And not just a bit of a whinge ...a bit of a whinge to Mumsnet, so the bugger is blissfully unaware and probably wondering what's taking OP so long.
AnaisNun · 15/01/2021 18:49

I’d take the meal and pop it in the fridge for your lunch tomorrow.

Then direct him to the toast and cereal.

I find this works well with my 4 year old, who is similarly rude at times.

Sexnotgender · 15/01/2021 18:50

He’s an ungrateful arse.

MadameButterface · 15/01/2021 18:51

Ywbvu to give it to the dog though, if it has onions and/or garlic in it

AndcalloffChristmas · 15/01/2021 18:52

Joining the chorus of “how dare he” and “yes his dinner is in the dog”.

But also, that recipe you’ve posted looks lovely! And you’ve now inspired me to do honey and soy sauce salmon as I was wondering what to do to the salmon I’ve got for tonight!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 15/01/2021 18:52

@QueenOfLabradors

Completely missing point... But I can't get my head around the idea of 'salmon' and 'curry' in the same sentence! Meanwhile according to the clock in this room it IS Wine o'clock (although due to forgetting to buy a new battery it has been Wine o'clock for several weeks now!)
I make a red Thai salmon curry - it could just be salmon on its own, or I could use other seafood as well. I haven’t tried other sorts of curry with salmon, but it stands up well to the spiciness of the red Thai curry, so I can’t se why it wouldnt taste good in other curries - Nigella does a Goan fish curry with white fish, but I think salmon would work too.

For me, one of the big benefits is that I can make the curry sauce in the morning (the curry paste, veg, stock and coconut milk) and then just bring it back to the boil at dinner time, and put the seafood in for the few minutes it takes to cook. If I serve it with rice noodles, it makes actually getting dinner on the table very quick.

@sesquipedalia - I don’t think you are being at all unreasonable - you are serving the salmon in two very different ways, and I think that is fine.

AndcalloffChristmas · 15/01/2021 18:53

Btw I’ve always thought of salmon as a treat!
What does he want, food that performs a little jig or does a comedy routine?

honeylulu · 15/01/2021 18:53

Say "ok then you can cook tonight. Looking forward to some fun dinner ".

Seriously you only work one day less , do all housework and cook every night. You've got a bad deal girl! Time to redress the balance.

Lex345 · 15/01/2021 18:58

I would humour him and take his criticism on board, OP. He has after all been doing VERY IMPORTANT work whilst you have merely being working, doing all the housework, laundry, cookery and childcare.

I recommend serving him a deconstructed version of salmon curry, presented to him lovingly in the kitchen bin. With polite directions as to where he can might opportune on the more exciting bread bin and toaster. And whilst he is in there, he can pour you a glass of wine. Git.

Undisclosedlocation · 15/01/2021 19:03

@sesquipedalia

It was going to be salmon with soy and honey but that was vetoed as boring. I'd consider a fillet of salmon different to slices of smoked salmon?

1st world problem I know.

What’s with the veto? You run plans for dinner past his lordship for approval and if his high expectations are not met then it’s back to the drawing board, not once but twice???

That’s bordering on doormat territory in my book
Let him cook his own bloody meal!

OwlinaTree · 15/01/2021 19:04

Just serve it to him dressed in a clown outfit while juggling 6 balls.
That's fun.

Grin

sesquipedalia · 15/01/2021 19:06

Haven't even started cooking yet as I've just put DD to bed. Think I'm going to present him with the ingredients I've gleaned from the larder and ask what he'd like to cook tonight instead.

He'd better make it 'fun'....

My ex husband would make a right fuss if he had chicken two nights in a row or two mince based meals in a week (even if they were totally different, like cottage pie and lasagne, and yes, burgers counted as mince).

EX husband.

Robbybobtail · 15/01/2021 19:08

Stop,going on about how VERY IMPORTANT he is - you are working almost the same hours of him whilst rising your dd and doing every fecking thing else! He’s totally brainwashed you. Just because he’s in a stressful job doesn’t give him the right to be rude when he’s getting his dinner cooked every night (why is that btw?)

Stop being a doormat.

Oh and salmon curry sounds lovely!

Quartz2208 · 15/01/2021 19:11

Salmon curry is lovely (as is the soy one) and agree different to smoked salmon pasta.

Your problem OP is you are allowing him to have a say - cooking meals every day (now including lunches) is a chore and he needs to eat what you cook

Topseyt · 15/01/2021 19:11

Mine would be told that he eats what is cooked or goes hungry.

I also still have a dog who would have her beady eye on it if allowed.

Asking him what he plans to cook instead might also have the desired effect.

Oreservoir · 15/01/2021 19:18

Tomorrow make a pile of mash and stand upright sausages in it. That’ll be fun.

Porcupineintherough · 15/01/2021 19:22

Let him cook. It'll be good for his stress. Meanwhile you Scotland drink wine. That'll be good for yours.

Porcupineintherough · 15/01/2021 19:22

sit and drink

GrannieD · 15/01/2021 19:32

Make him chicken nuggets tomorrow if he wants a ‘fun’ tea

Heronwatcher · 15/01/2021 19:36

You need to share the domestic work much more equally. Then he won’t behave like a dick as he will realise how hard it is to think of And cook appetising meals. If you start doing all the childcare and housework then you will literally never stop.

But I do think salmon curry is a bit gipping, have you cooked it before? Salmon with soy and honey I would eat happily every day of the week though.

sesquipedalia · 15/01/2021 19:52

I went with honey and soy in the end. Lost enthusiasm for cooking a full curry. Don't knock it though, salmon in a coconut / tamarind/ limey sauce is yummy!!
