Apparently, if he does issue those pardons on the quiet, Biden can just reveal tehm the next day. Smile

CaveMum · 19/01/2021 18:25

@DGRossetti oh yes there’s definitely a level of pomp to it - have the big parade, let the crowd see the President, etc, but I do also think the legitimacy plays into it - if lots of people see him being sworn in you can’t dispute that he’s not the one in charge.

Also with the Obama hiccup they don’t want to give detractors/enemies any opportunity to claim things were not done the right way.

This is the organisation that was vital in fighting many of Trumps and co legal challenges, plus fighting voter suppression at state level

@NotaRealLawyer

Isn't Trump supposed to be releasing a farewell video ( or did I imagine that?)
Yes. not sure if it is coming out before or after the pardonpalooza.

I suspect they're still editing it to splice out the bits where Trump went off script

"The mob was fed lies," Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says. "They were provoked by the president and other powerful people. And they tried to use fear and violence to stop a specific proceeding of the first branch of the federal government, which they did not like."

This is sounding like a vote for impeaching Trump to me.

France Knows How This Ends.
Polarization, anger, division—French history offers a warning for what might come after Donald Trump.
www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2021/01/france-america-donald-trump/617729/

As a historian of modern France, I’ve followed with great interest the innumerable comparisons drawn between Trumpism and Nazism that began even before Trump took office: the endless debate over whether Trump can be called a “fascist” (I would say yes), whether American society today resembles Weimar Germany before it fell to the Nazis (I would say no), and whether we can really say that the Republican Party is just a confederation of “collaborators” (of course we can).

NotaRealLawyer · 19/01/2021 18:40

This must be the first time in Trump's privileged life that he has not been able to buy, threaten, scheme, blackmail his way to what he wants.
He's a loser, and he detests losers. He must be in meltdown.

NotaRealLawyer · 19/01/2021 18:47

No mention of the role of Marshall Petain and the Vichy by that French Historian I note.Hmm

Lweji · 19/01/2021 18:49

I'll probably be teaching in a lab, so I might watch it on my phone. More or less discreetly. Possibly less.

Speaking of the White House Correspondents’ Association, I hope they reinstate it in some form. And invite Seth Meyers.

Biden on live now CNN

DuncinToffee · 19/01/2021 18:54

BREAKING: Georgia Secretary of State certifies the 2020 US Senate elections, paving the way for @ossoff and @ReverendWarnock to be sworn in tomorrow

That has gone under the radar a bit

TheNorthWestPawsage · 19/01/2021 18:56

CNN are reporting that VP Pence may not go to Trumpy's goodbye party.

Biden currently talking and saying goodbye to Delaware.

Lweji · 19/01/2021 18:56

Also, a farewell to Washington and a return to New York with a song in her heart from my favourite Melania Trump.

I second the thanks to Laura Benanti for her service, not only to her nation, but also abroad.

NotaRealLawyer · 19/01/2021 18:59

Biden was a bit choked up there, got a bit teary myself.

Just in time for the Impeachment trial in the Senate? I was hoping they would.

The real danger now is too many people think "We did fascism, and now it's all OK again" - which feeds into the "All I had to do to end world poverty was watch Coldplay" sentiment too many people have.

The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.

Joe Exotic's legal team says a limo is waiting for him near his prison because they are "confident" Trump will grant a pardon.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 19/01/2021 19:41

I've just thought of a thread title for tomorrow: Biden (as in 'bidding", in case it's only obvious to me!) Goodbye to Trump. (Or somesuch). Probably been done before, though.

Lweji · 19/01/2021 19:43

Not B-day?

FantasticButtocks · 19/01/2021 19:46

It will be the final thread of the Trump presidency so I suggest something along the lines of: Bye Trump, biggest ever loser, don't let the door hit you on the way out! Grin
