To retrain at 47 on the basis of my migraines, and not, what the hell do I do?

I have a couple of chronic conditions, not life limiting but fucking annoying and I have to keep a diary for medications etc. I also suffer with migraines not related to the conditions.

Just looked back and realised that I have had a single migraine since last March. Previously I was getting on average 3 a month. I knew I was stressed but... ya know, didnt really add it up.

I was in hospitality for 20 years and then got binned off in October due to furlough ending and my time with that company being less than 2 years so it didnt cost them anything. I have thought of retraining for a while but....I am 47. Anything worth doing will take me to 51 minimum (48 in 3 months) and who the fuck would take on a NQ Anything at that age??!

Help!

What do you do now and what would you like to retrain in? I say go for it. There was a few people in their 50s on my uni course a few years ago so its not unheard of for people to retrain and in many ways it can help as lots of courses prefer people will life experience.

PyongyangKipperbang · 15/01/2021 00:36

Like I said, 20 years in hospitality and no idea what to retrain in. Thats what I need advice on!

Good at ...Customer Service, being nice to people, managing large teams of customer service providers, bringing on people with talent, liasing between teams....

There’s an organisation called career shifters that’s worth checking out

Shaniac · 15/01/2021 00:49

You've got a shit ton more skills than me lol. Hmm talent agencies could be good, managing people, liasing between people. Although i have no idea how to get into that.

Have you done them online career quizes? You tell them what you are good at and bad at and they suggest roles at the end? I think reed does one.

What about teaching hospitality/customer service? The basic award in adult education is only 12 weeks, that's generally the minimum teacher training adult education providers ask for, there are lots of training providers who do apprenticeships in these subjects and your background might make you a suitable tutor/assessor.

hoplittlebunnyhop · 15/01/2021 00:59

With 20 years experience in hospitality a year long cert Ed and a TAQA course you’d be snapped up as an accessor for NVQ hospitality courses ...

PerseverancePays · 15/01/2021 01:12

You’re going to be fifty one anyway so you might as well train now.

Hopefully someone will come along and give you the current version of ‘what colour is my parachute?’
Have fun.
