Weird gift

It was my birthday earlier this week. I had a few gifts from friends and family arrive in the post, which was very kind and unexpected.

There was one gift that I'm a bit confused about. My friend has sent me a lovely pair of pyjamas. I went straight the the label to check the size (as they looked smaller than I'd buy myself), but there was no tag and ALL labels have been cut out. I have no idea of the size at all, what brand they are, how to wash them etc. It's a bit odd isn't it?

Do you think they were re-gifted or maybe second hand?? They look new and smell fine.

Why would she cut out the labels before wrapping and sending them to me??

It may be that she's bought them from a catalogue return shop, most of those places cut the labels out so you can't return them to the original store.

Oh ok, didn't know they existed. Interesting! This could well be the answer. Thank you.

places like everything5pounds cut out the labels so you don't know the brand.

KeyIndexAug · 14/01/2021 23:09

Or maybe it's so you can't return them for full price like a pp said

Quite a few big brands like Seasalt, Joules, use outlets online, they cut out or deface the labels so they can't be resold.

hexarola · 14/01/2021 23:43

@TheLittleRedToothbrush

Could they be handmade ?
Definitely not, you can see a tiny bit of the label is still there. They've been cut out for sure.

Think you're all completely right. I'll have to start shopping on these sites. So many bargains!

But of an odd one to give as a gift though don't you think? (...I'm very grateful but just got me quite confused)

odd, I've bought things in outlet stores with brand labels removed, but not the size ones.

Youdonut · 15/01/2021 04:59

If the price can just be removed whilst still leaving the tag, then I just remove that. If the tag needs to be removed in order to remove the price, then I do that. People don't need to know how much the gift cost. I would obviously prefer they could return it to exchange for the correct sizing if I've got the wrong sizing, whereever possible though.

Maybe she did get them second hand, hence the washing labels etc cut out. But honestly, if she did, so what? Why would you even post about it? Maybe she's hard up financially but wanted to get you something and did what she could? Maybe she's not struggling financially but saw it and thought you'd like it anyway?

It's a bit odd but I wouldn't have felt the need to post about it, asking if they were re-gifted or second hand, it doesn't seem enough of an issue personally, but that's just me.

hexarola · 15/01/2021 07:35

@Youdonut well how about that, two people with two different opinions... Thanks for being patronising.

I already said I appreciated the gift. I'm well within my rights to ask a question which I'm confused about. I like the pjs and will wear them.
