AIBU? Husband won't use previously boiled water for his tea

Petty light hearted discussion here however I have just boiled the kettle which had already had water in from earlier in the day so not fresh and made a herbal tea. 2 seconds later my husband tips out the hot water and fills it with fresh water and reboils for his Earl grey as apparently it makes the tea taste 'off if it's not completely fresh water! To me this just seemed very wasteful and maybe I have terrible taste but I haven't ever tasted my tea being 'off' so who is right?

YABU - I'm clearly a heathen all these years who drinks terrible tea
YANBU- He's a weirdo

I always have fresh boiled water for my tea

OutrageousFlavourLikeFreesias · 14/01/2021 18:05

He's right and YABU, sorry! If really does make a difference. Your tea will taste much nicer with freshly boiled water.

HaveANiceFuckingDay · 14/01/2021 18:05

I don’t like reboiled water either
I only put in enough water for one cup anyway , but if there is water in there i tip it and use fresh
He’s right especially with Earl Grey it dies ruin the taste

Mooselaurels · 14/01/2021 18:06

I put fresh water in the kettle in the morning (only ever boil the minimum amount, cos more is just a waste of electricity) then top up with fresh water over the course of the day.

FelicityPike · 14/01/2021 18:06

I’d reboil the kettle, but I wouldn’t refill it.

ElspethFlashman · 14/01/2021 18:06

Well apparently this is a scientific thing and some people swear blind they can taste the difference.

I do not, and couldn't be arsed changing the water each time. I do however change it probably about 2 times a day as I live in a hard water area. I have about 5 cups of tea a day.

My parents only changed it when it was empty. Didn't seem to make any difference tbh.

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 14/01/2021 18:07

When you boil water, the water loses some of its oxygen, so tea made with previously boiled water won't taste as good as fresh. To me it doesn't taste 'off' though, just less flavour.

WantChewbaccaForGood · 14/01/2021 18:07

I say YANBU, waste of water and electricity.

Frazzlefrazle · 14/01/2021 18:07

Oh for gods sake! He's feeling very smug with himself now!

Well I like my scummy tea water Grin

I will try it tomorrow and see if its really any better

Sheepareawesome · 14/01/2021 18:08

He is right, sorry! It just doesn't taste the same.

Snowvid19 · 14/01/2021 18:09

Re-boiled water tastes like TCP. It’s just a fact. You can get away with re-boiling once, maybe twice at a push, but you can really tell if someone’s done it several times.

Justcallmebebes · 14/01/2021 18:09

Who knew? I use pre boiled water. Will try fresh now and see if there's a difference

sunsetorange · 14/01/2021 18:09

Sorry OP but yeah fresh every time!

Neighneigh · 14/01/2021 18:09

I'm with your DH sorry. I tip the cold, previously boiled water over a plant, but tbh that's not much because I only fill it up one cup at a time, 2 if I know I am going to chain-drink

purplebagladylovesgin · 14/01/2021 18:09

He's right ,but apparently I'm a tea snob.

Neolara · 14/01/2021 18:10

Ever since first getting pregnant 17 years ago, I find reboiled water absolutely disgusting. Before pregnancy, I never noticed.

Frazzlefrazle · 14/01/2021 18:10

@WantChewbaccaForGood

I say YANBU, waste of water and electricity.
Exactly!

I did that embarrassing thing of saying think of people who go without fresh water whist he was pouring it down the sink Blush

He's a weirdo but so is DH. I'm a full the kettle full and use til it's gone person, he's like your Dh

FrankskinnerscRoc · 14/01/2021 18:10

Get a one cup kettle OP.

BrieAndChilli · 14/01/2021 18:10

It does make a difference, I watched a programme about it. When you boil the water it loses some of its oxygen and also because some of the water evaporates what’s left has higher concentrations of some things hence the altered taste

DappledThings · 14/01/2021 18:11

I'd insist on making at least 20 cups of tea over a few days, some with reboiled water and some not and making him state which is which in a taste test. Unless he gets at least 75% right I'd say he's talking bollocks!

StrippedFridge · 14/01/2021 18:12

It makes your tea taste flat. I only noticed when I started drinking tea black.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 14/01/2021 18:12

Yes YABU

Reboiling messes up the oxygenation of the water, which ruins the taste

Frazzlefrazle · 14/01/2021 18:13
