To be a bit jealous of over 50 holiday bookings

Toomuch2019 · 14/01/2021 09:06

I probably am but here goes

I was reading an article about surges in over 50s holiday bookings driven by the fact that they are anticipating getting vaccinated soon.

And I'm finding myself incredibly envious that there is a subset of the population that will be able to go about living normally and going abroad while the rest of us are locked away waiting for a vaccine.

I don't feel like I can plan anything holiday wise at least abroad right now as there is no timeline on vaccines for under 50s and I don't want to risk getting ill in another country. Particularly if insurances will only cover vaccinated people (which isn't the case yet but can see it moving in that direction).

I know there is no answer and obviously I'm not arguing vaccines aren't in right order but does anyone else feel wound up with articles like this rubbing it in?

Jealousy is such a wasted emotion OP.

StepOutOfLine · 14/01/2021 10:43

I'm 55 and at work right now, this minute. Teaching your fucking kids so you don't have to.
But crack on OP with today's ageism.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 10:43

Most of my parents friends (68 years plus) ARE booking holidays though.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 10:44

I don't think you are teaching my kids step but anyway!

crumpet · 14/01/2021 10:44

It’s a media wind up with little in the way of accurate data. But has succeeded in getting the froth levels up.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 10:45

It is a raw nerve because the injustice exists in our society and it does not work for the young crumpet

Toomuch2019 · 14/01/2021 10:48

@tinselearedcow

OK, I have read the BBC article and the OP is being very misleading:

"TUI, the UK's largest tour operator, says 50% of bookings on their website are currently by over-50s"

So the same percentage of under 50s are booking holidays as over 50s. Are you angry eith them too OP?

I guess I put the under 50s with little certainty of vaccines in the "if they want to take the risk" camp.

My husband is over 50 and yet we won't go abroad until I am vaccinated too as it's too big a risk catching in a foreign country, would be too much of a worry. I've known too many younger people get very ill with it. Whereas he will have that peace of mind much sooner.

I didn't start this to dig at the over 50s order of priority in vaccines (I think I completely right order) , more of a frustration that I'm upset will have to wait for longer to be certain I'm safe to do things. And whilst that is the rational consequence of vaccination order I don't want it rubbed in my face by bbc articles I guess

If that's not a dig then you might want to look up the meaning.

HelebethH · 14/01/2021 10:51

If its written in an article it must me true!!!!! ! I am over 50 and don't anticipate getting my vaccination anytime soon. In fact i would willingly give my place up to teachers, childcare providers, firefighters, police or anybody in a public role who I strongly believe should go ahedad of me in the queue. It is a sentiment shared by just about everyone I know mn my age group who is fit and healthy. I certainly am not booking a holiday or neither are any others i know. We have far to much common sense.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 10:53

I think you have made a valid point op.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 10:54

The optics will not be great if lots of pensioners jetting off on holiday leaving the young to pay the bills unvaccinated.

tinselearedcow · 14/01/2021 10:56

Toomuch2019 I want to believe you, but I am not sure I do. The fact that you didn't present the facts in the article but concentrated on the misleading headline makes me doubt you. There is so much casual ageism on this site.

tinselearedcow · 14/01/2021 10:57

If you read the fucking article you will see they will be jetting off with an equal number of under 50s and some multigenerational groups of holidaymakers.
KarmaStar · 14/01/2021 10:58

Yabu and ridiculous

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 11:00

tinsel Well actually no, because it will be the pensioners that will be vaccinated, everyone else will be there on a wing and a prayer, if they are there at all, given that millions will have lost their jobs by then!

It is not the same travelling safe in the knowledge that you are vaccinated and safe, and travelling and hoping you won't fall ill whilst there/en route etc. One group clearly have an advantage.

Seriously.

Icanseegreenshoots · 14/01/2021 11:01

Never knew we had so many over 50s on here in the first place, than itself is quite enlightening.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/01/2021 11:03

Well my parents in their 80's have had their 1st vaccines. They definately will not be going anywhere soon, my dad has dementia.

StepOutOfLine · 14/01/2021 11:04

Some of us have been here for over 20 years. When it were all fields and not nearly as nasty and ageist as it is now.

What's your opinion on the 50% of Tui bookers who are under 50?

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/01/2021 11:05

@Icanseegreenshoots, see you never know someones age unless they tell you.

Icenii · 14/01/2021 11:06

I dont think the situation will play out like Ican. However, Ican, you want to be vaccinated so you can do things because currently it is shit, yet you are wishing what you hate about this situation onto others e.g you believe over 50s will jet off somewhere and they shouldn't. It sounds like you want everyone to edure just because you are.

cc177 · 14/01/2021 11:06

Just FYI - you can still catch the disease for which you've been vaccinated but will shake it off faster or show no symptoms. No need to be jealous or envious, we'll all get opportunities that others don't at some point or another. The media can only make money by publishing content that drives negative emotions. Our brains are wired to be attracted to negative news more than positive (for obvious evolutionary reasons).

So do you resent the vulnerable (including those of working age) and healthcare workers getting the vaccination first as well? Or is it just the pensioners?

Seriously.

Brunt0n · 14/01/2021 11:08

I’ve booked 2 holidays for this year and looking at booking another 2 or 3 mini breaks 🤷🏼‍♀️ I have insurance if we do get to go, and we’ll get a refund if we aren’t able to go. We felt like we needed somethings to look forward to! First holiday is booked for mid May, so let’s see if we are able to go!

Lurkingforawhile · 14/01/2021 11:09

I'm planning to book a holiday. It's just something to look forward to. I'm going to use a company with a good covid policy so if it gets postponed for a year that's ok. I just have nothing else to look forward to and researching it will give me something to do. I'm also lucky to have a secure salary and it will help the economy I think. My dad (retired) has a pre-covid postponed holiday booked for May or Sept, and he knows that it may get delayed again but he is still looking forward to it.

Lurkingforawhile · 14/01/2021 11:11

And wasn't the news article about the coach holidays recently released which have been booked? I'm guessing the demographic for those is mainly only 50
