Passport office appear to have lost my old passport

I applied to renew my passport on the 9th of December. Sent off my old passport on the 10th and it was signed for there on the 14th.

Since then I have had numerous reminders that they haven’t received my old passport. I have spoken to them and they have reiterated that they haven’t received it, have taken the receipt number to prove it was signed for but keep just saying to wait.

I’m not in a rush for the passport per se but what do I do now given it appears it has been lost and according to some reading around this isn’t uncommon?

If they're asking you to wait rather than denying they have it then it sounds like they accept that they received it and are trying to locate it. It must be on the premises and you have proof it was delivered so you have done everything you can for now I think.

Hugely frustrating and was a worry of mine when I applied for a renewal recently.

Just to clarify, the person you spoke to is probably accurate in that they haven't received it, but that doesn't mean it hasn't been delivered to the premises.
