Not to want to buy fruit & veg that have been smoked on?

I’m pretty sure IANBU but want to check.

There are a couple of market stalls in the local town centre most days selling fruit & veg. I really like the idea of buying from them instead of the supermarket, but too many times when I walk past one or more of the sellers will be smoking all over the produce & it puts me off completely.

That’s reasonable isn’t it? Or am I just being fussy?

That would totally put me off

Godimabitch · 14/01/2021 07:54

Yeah that's gross. It would make me question all aspects of their food hygiene too.

AlwaysCheddar · 14/01/2021 07:54

Gross. I wouldn’t buy from them.

FTMF30 · 14/01/2021 07:54

Yanbu, I wouldn't buy from them.

RickJames · 14/01/2021 07:55

It's very off putting. However, fruit and veg has probably already been wee'd on in the fields by agricultural workers and animals so I always give everything a good wash anyway!

Bohemiagirl · 14/01/2021 07:57

Wouldn't put me off at all. I always wash fruit and veg.
Years ago I worked in a supermarket. I saw things that would put you off ever eating anything! (Probably different now).

ThursdayLastWeek · 14/01/2021 07:57

How do you smoke all over the produce??
Do you mean they’re smoking next to their produce outside?

I agree it doesn’t look very professional but I wouldn’t seriously think there were health risks.

Livpool · 14/01/2021 07:58

I am very anti-smoking but this wouldn't bother me

Uhhuhoyaye · 14/01/2021 08:00

Is vehicle pollution must be a serious concern for you too? Many crops grow in fields close to roads.
How much do you know about pesticides? The chemicals sprayed onto plants which kill living creatures.

Cabinfever10 · 14/01/2021 08:01

Yabu
Don't you wash your fruit and veg before you use it?

SilkyMoonfaceandTheSaucepanMan · 14/01/2021 08:02

@Bohemiagirl please tell.

SmileyClare · 14/01/2021 08:03

It wouldn't bother me. There are loads of pollutants in the air, crops are sprayed, the fruit and veg have been handled many times before sale, customers tough produce, cough on it.

Obviously just wash fruit, such as apples when you get home. Cigarette smoke can't penetrate fruit and veg.

It's great you want to support small local businesses Smile

Herja · 14/01/2021 08:03

That produce will most likely have been crapped on, pissed on, possibly covered in pesticides or preservers. It will have been stacked in busy areas near trucks puffing fumes all over it. Many of the initial agricultural workers will have been smoking while handling it.

There is no logic at all. It being outside in a busy city centre area is likely to make it as manky as being near a smoker. The only difference, is that this single thing is one you can see. Your food is filthy anyway.

SmileyClare · 14/01/2021 08:04

*touch

Dotinthecity · 14/01/2021 08:05

I'd wash it first so it wouldn't bother me but if it did, I'd just buy it somewhere else.

mummyof2ds · 14/01/2021 08:07

That would put me off and I am a smoker i don't even smoke in my own house or near are food so I defo don't want someone else doing it

UseOfWeapons · 14/01/2021 08:07

It wouldn’t put me off. I buy most of my fresh stuff from the market.
As PP have said, pollution and pesticides far more of an issue. I wash fruit and veg anyway. I have no way of knowing if a stall holder is washing hands after coughing or sneezing either, but it wouldn’t prevent me from buying something, as it’s my responsibility to decide to wash vegetables if I have concerns.

CherryRoulade · 14/01/2021 08:08

I wouldn’t purchase anything from someone smoking.

toodleloooo · 14/01/2021 08:10

To those suggesting you simply wash it - isn't the issue with smoke that it seeps in? A quick rinse won't touch that. I don't think YABU, OP.

AlternativePerspective · 14/01/2021 08:11

It would put me off. Not because of the fact there was cigarette smoke near the produce but because of the impression it creates.

bobbiester · 14/01/2021 08:13

YABU just wash them. It's an outdoor stall so the fruit has much more worrying things on it (e.g..diesel fumes) but nothing a quick wash can't fix.

LooseMooseHoose · 14/01/2021 08:14

@toodleloooo How would it seep in? Smoke seeps into fabric because it is woven and therefore has little holes to let the smoke in. Likewise the foam underneath if it's a sofa or something.

Unless the veg is knitted, you'll be fine

rosie1959 · 14/01/2021 08:15

Just fussy

Piccalino3 · 14/01/2021 08:15

We have this in our town at the market. There's one particular man who smokes at his stall and I often walk past and think how disgusting it is, however I absolutely detest smoking.

eaglejulesk · 14/01/2021 08:26

YABU - ridiculous
