Not to want to buy fruit & veg that have been smoked on?

I’m pretty sure IANBU but want to check.

There are a couple of market stalls in the local town centre most days selling fruit & veg. I really like the idea of buying from them instead of the supermarket, but too many times when I walk past one or more of the sellers will be smoking all over the produce & it puts me off completely.

That’s reasonable isn’t it? Or am I just being fussy?

Good luck OP. Smoking threads in any context it would seem, do not go down well.

As an aside, I don't think YABU. I get why that would be off putting.

Sunshineandflipflops · 14/01/2021 08:28

I very rarely wash fruit or veg and I am still standing 42 years later. My parents didn't either and they are mid 70's with no ill effects.

So don't buy it/wash it if it bothers you but it's not going to hurt you.

Bluntness100 · 14/01/2021 08:28

Wow. When you think of the logistics chain, this is the least that’s occured to it.

But buy from where you want to. It doesn’t matter how daft your reasons.

Houseofmirth66 · 14/01/2021 08:28

It’s smoke not novichok.

AlwaysLatte · 14/01/2021 08:30

I don't think anyone should smoke near food. Even though you can wash it of course - it's gross and unprofessional. So I wouldn't buy it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 14/01/2021 08:33

Is it smokers week this week on here lol.

vanillandhoney · 14/01/2021 08:35

I get why it's off putting. But the fruit and veg will have seen a lot worse than some cigarette smoke before it makes its way to you!

Skipsurvey · 14/01/2021 08:36

yabu
just wash the fruit and veg, which you should be doing anyway
i cannot believe every single market stall holder is smoking.

do you have a greengrocer?

Winterwoollies · 14/01/2021 08:39

I’d rather buy from a market stall or greengrocer, than a supermarket.

So they’ve smoked, outside, in the vicinity of the fruit and veg? Yeah, that wouldn’t bother me.

It’s grown in poo, just give it a wash.

GhostPepperTears · 14/01/2021 08:40

You can buy/not buy whatever you like, for whatever reason you like.

Personally, it wouldn't bother me. I wash fruit/veg and consider that enough.

x2boys · 14/01/2021 08:46

Don't buy it then🙄

SoupDragon · 14/01/2021 08:47

I am as anti smoking as they come but this wouldn't bother me in the slightest. There are so many other pollutants on them!

Don't you wash fruit and veg before using them?

ithinkyouareveryrude · 14/01/2021 08:49

@toodleloooo

To those suggesting you simply wash it - isn't the issue with smoke that it seeps in? A quick rinse won't touch that. I don't think YABU, OP.
He’s having a quick fag over a stall not not boxing a pepper. The smoke will sit in the surface and then wash off.
ithinkyouareveryrude · 14/01/2021 08:50

Hot boxing*

Pikoty · 14/01/2021 08:52

Its getting boring moaning about smokers now, can't we moan about something more relevant instead, like teachers?

diversity101 · 14/01/2021 08:54

I wouldn’t want to buy their produce. I know it all needs washing before I eat it but it still grosses me out.

I also wouldn’t want to support these stalls if their owner is smoking in the streets. Gross

SWnewstart · 14/01/2021 08:55

What's the autocorrect or whatever meaning of the words "not not boxing a pepper" in previous post?

SWnewstart · 14/01/2021 08:56

OK just read what it should say, sorry!

RubyandPearl · 14/01/2021 08:58

Probably best not to think too much about it to be honest, as long as you give it a good wash first

Kljnmw3459 · 14/01/2021 08:59

It doesn't put me off anymore than pesticides, fruit flies, pollution and other people's hands. Probably spittle too. Mud.

DenisetheMenace · 14/01/2021 09:00

Would put me off too.

spinningaround72 · 14/01/2021 09:00

Yanbu. It grosses me out too. We had a greengrocers local to us and it always stunk because they sat outside the back door smoking, they didn't manage to stay open very long.

missmouse101 · 14/01/2021 09:05

Yanbu. You are perfectly able to decide for yourself if this is unacceptable to you, so don't worry what others might do. I'd say it's dangerous too during a pandemic as the smoke has been inside the smoker's lungs and then breathed all over the veg.Shock

JinglingHellsBells · 14/01/2021 09:18

If you wash it, how can it be an issue?

If you are going to be fussy, buy organic and at least then you won't be eating pesticides- far more of an issue that a bit of fag ash or smell of smoke you can wash off.

GwendolineMarysLaces · 14/01/2021 09:19

If it was outside it wouldn't bother me and I'm pretty squeamish about cigarette smoke. I've always been amazed when on holiday seeing apples and grapes growing on a huge scale right next to motorways. I don't think this is something to get worried about
