Not to want to buy fruit & veg that have been smoked on?

I’m pretty sure IANBU but want to check.

There are a couple of market stalls in the local town centre most days selling fruit & veg. I really like the idea of buying from them instead of the supermarket, but too many times when I walk past one or more of the sellers will be smoking all over the produce & it puts me off completely.

That’s reasonable isn’t it? Or am I just being fussy?

I wouldn’t buy anything from a market stall where the seller smoked on the job. It’s just off-putting and I wouldn’t want to approach the area at all.

@Carolofthebellies

That's gross. I also hate when the seller puts fruits and vegetables stalls next to a busy road absorbing all the pollution from the traffic.
The same fruit and veg that have travelled in vehicles up and down the country, and have been covered in pesticides, animal pee/faeces and goodness knows what else?

If a pitch is next to the road, you can't really do anything about it. People can't just pitch up wherever. You have only certain places and pitches are an exact space. You amy be lucky and have a choice of pitches, or you may not and have that one left to take. Street trading is controlled

Utterly ridiculous

However I'm sure you'll get broad support Grin

@BertramLacey

I'd say it's dangerous too during a pandemic as the smoke has been inside the smoker's lungs and then breathed all over the veg.

Well that could be said for anyone breathing in the vicinity of the veg, the difference being that if they can't smell their breath, you won't be aware of it.

Well quite. Non smokers breathe out air that has been in their lungs too Confused There is no increased covid risk.

The level of squeamishness from some posters is a bit absurd. There seems to be a belief that supermarkets are sterile and all the fruit and veg are scrubbed of all pollutants and handled with gloves before arriving in your online shop in a nice plastic bag.

The smell of cigarette smoke makes me vomit thank god you weren't an adult in the seventies.

I thought I’d update. None of the staff who usually smoke were around today so I decided to give one of the stalls a go. Worst case scenario I’d have wasted a few quid & filled my food recycling bin...

And the veg are lovely & only smell of themselves. So as long as I can keep avoiding being around when anyone’s actually smoking over them (ick factor, reasonable or not) I’ll stick with it.
