Light-hearted (kinda)

I was talking to my mum about baby products (I’m pregnant with twins)
She recommended some products.

I then got an ad on FB to advertise the exact products she recommended.

YABU: you are crackers
YANBU: I’ve had this too.

Please tell me your stories (make me laugh)!!!

Absolutely a thing. What freaks me out more is when I’ve been THINKING about a thing and it then recommends it.

BeardieWeirdie · 13/01/2021 15:31

Yep, turn off Siri

WankPuffins · 13/01/2021 15:32

This happens to me all the time.

Things I've spoken about but have no searched for. Nor has Dh or anyone else in the house.

Apple are supposed to be really good on security but I keep unplugging my home pod unless I need it.

You need to turn off Siri

user1493413286 · 13/01/2021 15:35

Yep this happened to me; DH and i were talking on the phone about condoms (no reason I would have googled it) and it came up as an advert. The other night DH and i were joking about weddings and then later on adverts for local venues came up

This. Although I can never deny or confirm that I've spoken out loud to myself about the product that appears.
YouBoughtMeAWall · 13/01/2021 15:35

This is very well known. I thought everyone knew?

PinkSnowAndStars · 13/01/2021 15:36

Yup. It does this. You need to turn of Siri. He’s always listening.

Ledkr · 13/01/2021 15:36

I was thinking about getting a cordless vac and literally the next thing ads popped up for them 😳

Janedownourlane · 13/01/2021 15:37

Happens a lot to me, we were talking about going over to Europe to see DS who lives there. Two minutes later an email from Direct Ferries popped up. Can't be a coincidence.
Will look at how to turn off Siri.

vanillandhoney · 13/01/2021 15:39

You need to turn Siri and your microphone off.

Boomboombroom · 13/01/2021 15:39

Awww… bye bye Siri —my one and only friend—

Like a PP said this is very well known.

I assumed everyone knew this by now.

I think some TVs are meant to listen in on you now. Anything you do on your smart phone, someone knows about.

Sooverthemill · 13/01/2021 15:39

Happens to me. I’ve never activated Siri. It is always off

WilsonMilson · 13/01/2021 15:39

I’ve absolutely had this. The last time I can remember was just before Christmas when ds said he would quite like a particular brand of jacket, not a mainstream one you see advertised all the time. I had not had a chance to google nor look it up when I got an advert showing the exact thing he’d been talking about an hour before.
Similar things like that have happened numerous times. Is it Siri? I don’t have Alexa for this very reason, but tbh I didn’t think of Siri!

Bloody thought police next!

The camera on your phone can see the bits on your carpets. Wink

PurplePansy05 · 13/01/2021 15:41

Do you think it's the case it listens to adverts which make you think about certain products/services and then your phone recommends them without you talking about them or googling them?

Btw I agree, I'm on Android and it definitely listens to conversations, not sure what to do about it as I don't use any assistants. Very uncomfortable.

Sheleg · 13/01/2021 15:42

Of course it's a thing. That's capitalism! Like Communism, only the state doesn't care about you. And you have to pay for them to spy on you.

atomt · 13/01/2021 15:42

Yes, I knew this happens but was a bit freaked out recently when I was shown an ad for something related to a topic I had only talked about with my psychotherapist in a session that week and definitely not with anyone else. Shock We are doing Zoom sessions so could have been my laptop too... No Siri here as I have an Android phone.

I have Siri turned off. Still happens.

Sciics · 13/01/2021 15:52

If you have the microphone turned on for Instagram (for when you use it to film videos) it listens to you and tailors the ads.

IloveJudgeJudy · 13/01/2021 15:53

@PinkSnowAndStars Siri - he? No. Siri is she for me. She's from NZ atm as the British one didn't work for a while.

PlinkPlink · 13/01/2021 16:00

Had it happen a few times and I always find it quite disturbing... makes me want to leave social media and stuff
