I am totally confused and hope someone can shed some light on what they think is happening here.after finding mice in my garage last year we had traps set up which worked effectively and since then have continued with traps.
Two days ago a mouse was caught and disposed of and as usual as bait I put a corner of biscuit in each trap and set them.Twice in the past two days the biscuit has gone but the traps have remained unsnapped!!how is this possible? The snaps are so sensitive that they snap instantly if touched so my question is how has a mouse managed to evade snapping the trap and getting the biscuits twice in two days???
For the life of me I cannot work out what's going on!

Use stickier bait. I used a bit of Mars bar
Mushed between my finger and then ‘stuck’ on the trap. Little buggers love Mars bar!

bearlyactive · 13/01/2021 13:20

Could they have approached it from a different direction?

YABU if you are using inhumane traps.

Agreed, no need.

Snap traps aren't inhumane.

Agree with other posters, you need sticker bait that's harder to take.

Wingedharpy · 13/01/2021 13:32

The mice have invested in barbecue tongs.

poshme · 13/01/2021 13:32

Try peanut butter.

A snap trap provides a quick death, so-called humane traps often provide a lingering death.
NotEver0 · 13/01/2021 13:33

@bearlyactive the traps havnt even moved position so I dont know how theyd enter without moving it

Use humane traps!

And find the hole they are getting through

HelloThereMeHearties · 13/01/2021 13:36

You have mouse ghosts.

WeatherwaxOn · 13/01/2021 13:36

We had similar - the mice removed the bait unscathed.
The humane traps we used were essentially an overnight mouse hotel with food and beddingand a one-way door. All mice caught this way were relocated to an outdoor spot (the same spot for the five we caught).

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 13/01/2021 13:39

I had this problem trying to catch a mouse that my cats bought in with a humane trap. I used peanut butter, which was licked clean daily but mouse stayed free. I was essentially just providing a bed and breakfast service for the mouse. Until one day it's little face emerged from a plant pot next to the TV and I managed to get it to climb into the trap and then released it outside. She was rather cute and we called her Henrietta.

Most likely the same mouse five times.
BashfulClam · 13/01/2021 13:40

Snap traps kill the mouse instantly so are pretty humane. Sticky trails or poison is worse.

BashfulClam · 13/01/2021 13:40

@CaptainMyCaptain I thought that, fancying a wee night at the hotel.

It would be interesting as the traps are super sensitive.

DimidDavilby · 13/01/2021 13:43

Snap traps provide a quick death.

Dumping a house mouse in the middle of nowhere in winter provides a slow death from cold and starvation.

Knittedfairies · 13/01/2021 13:43

As upthread, try peanut butter.

Biscusting · 13/01/2021 13:45

They’ve figured out your trap. You need night vision goggles and a hammer.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 13/01/2021 13:54

I second the stickier bait. We had similar issues. They are incredibly smart and crafty! Snao traps are the best.

Using humane traps and "relocation" can actually in the end be quite inhumane and cause longer death.

Glue traps should be illegal.

FrankieChips · 13/01/2021 14:04

If they are in your garage does it really matter? Is there a food source in there? Clearing that up should help to resolve it.
