I am totally confused and hope someone can shed some light on what they think is happening here.after finding mice in my garage last year we had traps set up which worked effectively and since then have continued with traps.
Two days ago a mouse was caught and disposed of and as usual as bait I put a corner of biscuit in each trap and set them.Twice in the past two days the biscuit has gone but the traps have remained unsnapped!!how is this possible?The snaps are so sensitive that they snap instantly if touched so my question is how has a mouse managed to evade snapping the trap and getting the biscuits twice in two days???
For the life of me I cannot work out what's going on!

Maybe your efforts to catch the mice are helping them evolve into brainier rodents! I have seen a similar thing with squirrels in the garden on a bird feeder. They manage to work out how to get the bird food that the feeder is designed to prevent them doing.

The man who came to get rid of my mouse problem used squished fudge bar, which they love apparently.

Confusedandshaken · 13/01/2021 14:21

@Threekneerepeater

YABU if you are using inhumane traps.
There is nothing humane about trapping a living creature in a box without food or water for hours at a time and then taking it to a location where it can't return to its home. These so-called 'humane 'traps might ease the conscience of the people buying them but are much more cruel than an instant, painless death in a snap trap.

@BashfulClam

Use stickier bait. I used a bit of Mars bar Mushed between my finger and then ‘stuck’ on the trap. Little buggers love Mars bar!
this . I use mars bar also.
ilovemydogandMrObama · 13/01/2021 14:26

Haven't tried it, but a friend has used a device off Amazon where you plug it in and deters by sound waves.

Sparklfairy · 13/01/2021 14:26

The only thing "humane" traps are humane to is your conscience.

Out of all the ways I can think of for a mouse to die, an instant neck break is by far the best.

But go on, wave bye little mousey from your humane trap, off you go to starve, get eaten, freeze and be lonely far away from your little mousey friends until you finally peg it Hmm

Marmunia1975 · 13/01/2021 14:29

People who use inhumane traps are utter scumbags. Would you lay out a trap for your baby?

Oh my god😂😂😂
Jaxhog · 13/01/2021 14:33

Mice are little devils but Mars bar works well. If you want to be humane, look for a Glis Glis trap.

I don't think Op wants to kill her baby. At least, she hasn't mentioned wanting to do so.
sosotired1 · 13/01/2021 14:35

You need electronic Rat Zappers - we use them to catch mice as well as rats. they electrocute them so an arguably better death and they can't get the food unless they cross the pad that the current comes through. They are just brilliant.

Jaxhog · 13/01/2021 14:35

Or get a cat

sosotired1 · 13/01/2021 14:36

We use peanut butter mixed with chocolate.

VodselForDinner · 13/01/2021 14:37

There’s only one logical explanation;

Poltermice.

Takebackthepower · 13/01/2021 14:45

Awful! They are very outdated! Please buy humane traps to catch them and release them, poor things!

Almostslimjim · 13/01/2021 14:46

Those saying humane traps, are you suggest OP relocates them (illegal).

Or bludgeons them?

HazelBite · 13/01/2021 14:50

My Neighbour used to borrow one of my cats on a regular basis when she got mice in her conservatory. Cat had water bowl and litter tray and was locked in for the night, it would keep it mouse free for about 6 months at a time!
Have you a friend or neighbour who has got a good proven mouser?

Seriouslymole · 13/01/2021 14:51

Please don't. It is far more inhumane to leave a mouse trapped and petrified in a small box and then throw them out into a winter to die slowly of starvation than to break their necks very quickly.

Read the full thread. Humane mousetraps are not always for the best. Especially in winter. Poor thing will starve to death or die of the cold. Not sure which will come first, but it will be a horrible, slow death. Snap traps seem harsh yes, but are better than humane ones...
TellingBone · 13/01/2021 14:57

Did it have clogs on?

81Byerley · 13/01/2021 14:58

For the people saying use humane traps. I asked a pest control officer years ago, when he was putting down poison. He said "Humane traps are fine as long as you're going to release the mice at least 5 miles away. They know their home by smell. If you release them up the road, they will be back in your house before you are!!"

I'm assuming your volunteering your home as suitable for the mice to live in
Cally62 · 13/01/2021 14:59

If the traps are placed outside you'll catch mice all day long even in your garage.

Leave the poor mice alone.

Zeb81 · 13/01/2021 15:03

It's a rat and therefore too big to be caught up in a mouse trap
