I am totally confused and hope someone can shed some light on what they think is happening here.after finding mice in my garage last year we had traps set up which worked effectively and since then have continued with traps.
Two days ago a mouse was caught and disposed of and as usual as bait I put a corner of biscuit in each trap and set them.Twice in the past two days the biscuit has gone but the traps have remained unsnapped!!how is this possible?The snaps are so sensitive that they snap instantly if touched so my question is how has a mouse managed to evade snapping the trap and getting the biscuits twice in two days???
For the life of me I cannot work out what's going on!

Do you want to borrow my cat? He’s the size of a Shetland pony and we’ve had a full size rat and a squirrel in four days this week.

The mice can learn to approach the trap from the side, so taking the bait without triggering the trap. You could try making a tunnel by placing the traps against the wall and using a box or piece of wood on the other side of the trap - the mouse then has to approach the bait from the front.

@MrsJBaptiste

There is nothing humane about trapping a living creature in a box without food or water for hours at a time and then taking it to a location where it can't return to its home. These so-called 'humane 'traps might ease the conscience of the people buying them but are much more cruel than an instant, painless death in a snap trap

It's a mouse FGS not a human being!

Hmm

I have a cat which is very effective, but I would not call the way he catches mice particularly humane. He likes to ‘play’ with them before killing them. If I was a mouse I think I would prefer to be killed in a trap than by a cat.

@Marmunia1975

People who use inhumane traps are utter scumbags. Would you lay out a trap for your baby?
I agree. Please could everyone also be clear whether they are offering advice on trapping mice or babies.

So far all I've succeeded in doing is getting peanut butter all over the house- I'm no closer to catching that damn baby.

The good thing is, there isn't usually more than one.

Terrific! A lot of cats including my old cat were fine with mice, birds etc but I think rats - as some will attack back and bite, were a step too far!
CleverCatty · 14/01/2021 11:00

agreed with silverbubbes - there is always more than one mouse - even if you think there are less.

What mice etc tend to do e.g. in houses etc is to send the male out most for food - presumably as he's stronger, less fearless etc. At least that's what I read...

But that means mummy mice and baby mice will be waiting for his return, with food or that it's safe to come out.

if it's the choice between having your neck broken in a trap or a cat catching you then I'm sure the mouse doesn't prefer either method.
CleverCatty · 14/01/2021 11:02
@CleverCatty Yes agree with that but you still have to get rid of the ones already inside, also believe it or not mice and rats will come in through open windows and doors so even if you block up the holes it only takes an opportunistic rodent and they are in!
little fuckers!

Only on MN would someone using a mousetrap be compared to murdering your own baby Grin

donquixotedelamancha · 14/01/2021 11:23

We use Nutella - completely irresistible to mice and they can't knock it free

It doesn't work well for babies. Their little fingers just grab a blob before they scurry back behind the kitchen units.

Do you want to borrow my cat? He’s the size of a Shetland pony

I think I need one of those.
