@DGRossetti

What's Giuliani done to piss Trump off. Have I missed something. Or did he agree to payment on results. With Donnie going not being the result that was talked about ?

Giuliani is actually a good candidate for the "do you believe your own bullshit" test I suggested upthread. He spouted a load of bollocks outside court, where he wasn't subject to censure for lying. But the second he was in peril, the tune changes. Suggesting he did not believe a word he was saying.

I must admit the idea that Giuliani thought he would still get paid for losing unwinnable cases is hilarious.

Now also remember that fundraising post election was done to pay legal fees to challenge the result.

If the money isn't going as promised to pay those legal bills, where is it going?

pointythings · 14/01/2021 14:22

Thanks, snowliving - very helpful information.

So not politics but practicalities.

BruceAndNosh · 14/01/2021 14:28

It would have preferable if Trump had stood down before they got ro the impeachment stage.. Not least because I don't think the Senate will vote to convict so Trump will be able to say 2 impeachments no conviction.

But he has repeatedly made it clear that he will NOT resign.

Darker · 14/01/2021 14:29

If the money isn't going as promised to pay those legal bills, where is it going?

I've long thought that the refusal to accept the election result was a fundraising tactic.

BruceAndNosh · 14/01/2021 14:38

I admit I do have a Trump escape plan in my head.
Friday he will do a raft of pardons but these will not be made public.
Saturday he will play golf at Bedminster (which the Press never manage to get photos of him playing there). Whilst there, he will "suffer" a serious but non fatal heart attack witnessed by nobody outside his Inner Circle and will ostensibly be whisked to Walter Reed.
Pence will have to take over for the remaining few days. Impeachment put on hold.
Trump gets his pardon from Pence and miraculously makes a full recovery reappearing in March when the appetite for impeachment has waned

PatriciaHolm · 14/01/2021 14:40

The Trump fundraising website had small print from the start saying that most of the contributions would actually go to the Save America PAC, not on fighting the election (which they knew they would lose in court, so made a lot of noise about but in reality didn't spend that much on). The PAC has quite loose rules about what the money can be spent on - Trump will be hoping to use it as a bit of a personal slush fund....

DGRossetti · 14/01/2021 14:43

Trump gets his pardon from Pence

I really can't see that happening.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/01/2021 14:53

I agree.

Scrotus feels he has a bombproof from any charges wrt the insurrection and frankly I think he's right. And the majority of the charges he is going to be facing are state charges so a pardon would do no good.

He's not going to resign, he's not going to voluntarily Article 25 himself, and he's not going to be removed by the Senate (pre-20 Jan). As with all of his past business failings and disasters, he's going to ride this one out and come out perhaps battered but essentially intact. Life has unfortunately taught him that he can bluster, lie, and blame or pay others to take the fall.

What happens when the NY cases start hitting the fan is anybody's guess. And with his usual banks (apparently) dropping him like a hot potato I'd say his financial future is questionable. But actual jail time for either the insurrection or his shady dealings? Not a chance. He's an expert at plausible deniability and covering his tracks.

Roussette · 14/01/2021 14:54

And I can't see him feigning illness. To him illness is weakness. I read somewhere that he was pretty awful to his Father when he got dementia. Mary Trump says he dismissed, derided and mocked his father.

I think Trump has a problem with illness, that's been illustrated many a time.

Its abit like London where its a Labour majority and the Mayor does everything to thwart doing what Government says to make Conservatives look bad.

Oh, I see you have friends in London as well. Well done.

I do not think this article has been linked so far.

A very interesting read that sheds light on the attitude to race among the American working class

To a lot of RepubiTories, illness is just Gods will. And you don't want to interfere with Gods will do you ?

Same with poverty. Poor people are poor because the Good Lord ordered their estate.

If you go to deep into that mindset, you'll find people who give to charity may as well have admitted they love satan ....

He won't be needed anymore. That's what. Trump knows he is useless in court, but he needed a trained monkey to go through hoops while challenging the election results.

PerkingFaintly · 14/01/2021 15:13

Not paying people in full is Trump's business model. He's done it for decades.

prettybird · 14/01/2021 15:15

Didn't Giuliani claim he was doing it for free anyway? Hmm

....or alternatively, if he was doing it on a "No Win, No Fee" basis, he was on tae plums with his success rate Grin

ListeningQuietly · 14/01/2021 15:17

Even if Biden takes his foot off the gas on Impeachment,
the FBI and the DAs are going to be rounding up and stirring
from the actions at the Capitol for a while yet

DGRossetti · 14/01/2021 15:17

Rings a vague bell. Presumably to try and impress (simple) folk into thinking (a) Trump had a case (???????????????????) and (b) to show what a nice guy he is.

But now I hear that ringing bell, I also recall reading that Giuliani pissed a lot of Trumpers off by effectively trying to take over the whole campaign.

Beau had a very interesting piece on what the various alphabet agencies might be up to. Made a lot of sense.

NotaRealLawyer · 14/01/2021 15:22

Giuliani's on the ropes it seems. I'd be surprised if he remains a member of the New York Bar Association.
www.cnbc.com/2021/01/11/capitol-riot-trump-lawyer-rudy-giuliani-faces-bar-association-probe.html

“Let’s have trial by combat,” said Giuliani, a former New York City mayor, ex-Manhattan U.S. attorney and former top Justice Department official.

The bar association noted that its bylaws state that no person who advocates the overthrow of the government of the United States, or of any state, territory or possession thereof, or of any political subdivision therein, by force or other illegal means, shall be a member of the Association

DGRossetti · 14/01/2021 15:27

Luckily that won't stop him practising law. Which is good, given how much he needs.

Lweji · 14/01/2021 15:48

“Let’s have trial by combat,” said Giuliani

Next, he'll be advocating lynch mobs instead of the police and the courts.
I do hope they strike him off.

DGRossetti · 14/01/2021 15:57

Of course Giuliani needs a lot of liquid capital for his most recent divorce, so this is probably not the news he wants to hear.

If he wants to bellyache about it, no one is going to listen, much less care.

PatriciaHolm · 14/01/2021 16:04

“Let’s have trial by combat,” said Giuliani

Apparently this was inspired by Game of Thrones.... (!!!)

“I was referencing the kind of trial that took place for Tyrion in that very famous documentary about fictitious medieval England,” Mr Giuliani said on Tuesday.

“When Tyrion, who is a very small man, is accused of murder. He didn't commit murder, he can't defend himself, and he hires a champion to defend him,” Mr Trump’s personal lawyer added, presumably referring to himself as the “champion”.

There is so much mindboggling nonsense there I don't know where to start.

AcrossthePond55 · 14/01/2021 16:06

MSNBC is reporting that the National Mall will be closed to the public on Inauguration Day. It's normally open to the public to come and watch the ceremonies on jumbo-trons.

Permits were previously granted for '1st Amendment' (anti-Biden) protests and no decision has been made regarding whether or not those permits will be cancelled. Permits for these protests were granted up to a total 5000 participants.
