@longwayoff

Unutterably vile pig of a man, now rapidly backpedalling away from his worshipful loons of supporters. Will they still love him? Or will they turn on him for betraying him and escort him to the nearest lampost where earlier fascist heroes have finished up? Who knows?
They'll figure he was 'forced' by persons unknown or that it's a 'deep fake'.
Quaagars · 13/01/2021 23:34

Oh and just to be clear my vote is most firmly in the latter camp!!

PerkingFaintly · 13/01/2021 23:34

Oh, but I''m less keen on his whining about free speech.

I've been silenced, sez the man appearing on TV.

FantasticButtocks · 13/01/2021 23:36

Even though that was plainly written for him to read out, he still managed to prioritise talking about censorship and 'free speech' hate speech- all because he's been banned from Twitter! It's pathetic that the leader of the free world could only communicate via social media. If he talked to the actual press, he just shut them down if they asked 'nasty questions' or 'difficult questions', just pathetic. On Twitter he could say any damn rubbish he liked and rile everybody up into the frenzy of hatred filled rioting we saw last week.

An utter disgrace to humanity, as we've all known all along.

thecatfromjapan · 13/01/2021 23:39

He's probably said enough to give wavering Republicans in the Senate a fig leaf to not vote with the Democrats.

But done it reluctantly enough to ensure his crazier supporters think he's saying this under duress.

Wherrsmaclickypen · 13/01/2021 23:44

Earlier an aide mentioned Trump was clueless about the impact of impeachment but was worried about his business.
Now we have a video which, hours after he has been inpeached, majors on his bans from social media albeit dressed up as broader censorship of other people and attempts to rewrite his position on protest and activism.

Unbelievable.

In a nutshell, this! Got a feeling that GOP will be like flipping Dory - only remembering the last “comment” that was made.

Part of me wishes he hadn’t been censored. I understand why he was. But I still kind of wish his unravelling could have been documented further.

DuncinToffee · 13/01/2021 23:48

'finding common ground' and calls for 'unity' seems to be the party line

RedToothBrush · 13/01/2021 23:51

A journey through the maze of Trumpism and how you can agree with what Trump has said today AND what he said last week...

Violence against the state isn't violence if its defending America. Its 'freedom fighting'. Remember Trump will still be the rightful president after 20th and Biden the illegitimate president.

Violence isnt violence if its self defence. Or someone was provoking it and you were attacking in a preemptive way. The police who defend the wrong president have made their choice and have abandoned rhe flag.

Violence doesn't count if your enemy isn't human. Then its just treating animals as if they are animals.

These types of moralistic cognitive dissonance to defend or justify the indefensible are a feature of authoritarians.

There are historic examples where starving people being shot to 'put them out of their misery' were deemed more humane than letting them have long drawn out deaths...

It does not matter what Trump says. He can play to the moralistic religious right of the party to make them feel better about associating themselves with an unconstitutional traitor. The damage has already done and people have the capacity to justify anything if they have enough to gain and their ideological belief is strong enough.

FantasticButtocks · 13/01/2021 23:51

I think it's a good thing that there is a bit of a delay before the trial, because the way things are coming to light faster and faster, with more and more violence and damage and threat, with skulduggery beforehand, there will be more to convict him on.

boatyardblues · 13/01/2021 23:53

@Wherrsmaclickypen

autocue and sedation. That is all I have to say on that.
I only watched the first 1 min 45 sec but we have to also at least consider a convincing deep fake or double. It was so unlike the usual Trump meandering rant, I was quite unnerved by it. Too little, too late...

The donations are drying up.

Apileofballyhoo · 13/01/2021 23:54

Who knew. He's capable of sounding reasonable. Somebody is scared of consequences.

What I meant really, was that maybe more republicans would see sense, the more serious stuff comes to light.

Although I guess some of those who voted against impeachment are not wanting too much investigation into what went on if they themselves are implicated.

If god, I love this post. Thank you.
boatyardblues · 14/01/2021 00:06

Trump’s speech tonight could been boiled down to: stop playing up right wing loons, or I am going to end up in jail or bankrupt or both.

thecatfromjapan · 14/01/2021 00:10

I had the rage when he did the whole 'whataboutery'/equivalence thing. When the Capitol is filled with troops, defending it against his bloody supporters/terrorists.

And the equivalence between an insurrection, with 5 dead and racists/insurrectionists being kicked off social media platforms ...

That was quite scary, actually.

He's speaking right to his base with that last. Drawing parallels between himself and the deep sense of aggrievement his base carry in them.
And telling them that equivalence is real, and it's a war.

Yes, it's true part of it is his own fury at power shifting, funding drying up, his route into an influential future looking rocky.

But he has an almost uncanny ability to parlay that into some horrific, enflaming alliance with dangerous people.

Wherrsmaclickypen · 14/01/2021 00:13

I am off to bed, but comforted by the thought of the Trump family slumped on the sofas watching Schitt's Creek together, (but without the redemption).Night all.

JamieLeesCurtains · 14/01/2021 00:13

Calling the assault on the Capitol and the deaths 'a calamity' ...

PatriciaHolm · 14/01/2021 00:13

It's been noted on Twitter that he actually said
"I cannot emphasize that there must be no violence, no lawbreaking, and no vandalism."

Whilst that may have been an autocue misread, I bet his more rapid followers will see it as a message....

JamieLeesCurtains · 14/01/2021 00:15

Yeah, I noticed that. He missed out 'enough'. Altered the meaning 180 degrees, can claim it was a mistake.

ah, the irony
Impeachment of Trump and Inauguration of Biden (#120)
ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/01/2021 00:21

Maybe it’s finally dawned on him that violence at the inauguration may tip the balance in the impeachment trial in the Senate.
Also once the inauguration has taken place Mr Trump won’t have presidential immunity.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 14/01/2021 00:26

I am assuming that the minute Biden is sworn in as president Trump becomes a private citizen. Trump could face action for anything that happens afterwards so he could be held liable for disruption on the 20th post Biden taking office?

DeRigueurMortis · 14/01/2021 00:32

I think it's actually passed a point he can control.

Whatever he says/said there will be cohorts within his support base who will interpret it to their own ends.

He never considered the implications of his actions other than how he might benefit and ironically that is likely to be his downfall because he's never understood that a person can only wield power that is granted to them and that power comes with conditions.
