@Wheresmykimchi Not what I am saying at all - if parents chose to pay 100 pounds per week for school meals, then the quality is going to be substantial different to what can be ordered for 30 (or 5 as was the case in many of the photographs) pounds per week.

Surely you understand that? The two are not comparable because they are based on two extremely different financial offerings.

I have never said state schools deserve shit so please don't put words in my mouth.
I do understand that. But I notice they aren't taking 200 quid (for arguments sake) then giving a carrot to private school parents. Funny that.

GlobeUs · 13/01/2021 14:58

@Wheresmykimchi Nope, they are not - what they have done is completely wrong and there is absolutely no excuse for it to have happened anywhere on this planet.

They should (but most likely won't) be held accountable. It's good to see some schools are swapping to the vouchers systems again.

They absolutely wont be held accountable. I'm beyond appalled. Apologies for my wording by the way Globe I didn't mean to imply that you thought FSM families could just be fed shite but that the company did.

GlobeUs · 13/01/2021 15:14

@Wheresmykimchi I absolutely agree with you, out of all the children in the country it's the ones on FSM that we need to ensure are getting the most nutritious foods.

I don't personally agree that a sandwich, piece of fruit and a yoghurt is actually a balanced meal at all.

Whilst I am making a huge assumption that people have the money to run a hob (and I do know when people don't) I would much rather see the ingredients for casserole, veg quiches, one tray baked chicken and veg, fried rice, stuffed peppers, baked potato, salad and toppings etc - all of which I could get from Iceland for under 25 - and I could make more than 20 portions with the money.

I would be able to stretch out even further if I could shop at the local market - however, there would be an issue with the Iceland delivery fee.

pinkyboots1 · 13/01/2021 15:16

I'm so relieved that my DD's school has sent out £15 Aldi vouchers while they wait for government guidance. (I'm hoping I'll get more vouchers but if it's a hamper then that'll be better than nothing) I'm 'subsidising this with food from the Olio app and the local community centre is selling food box's for a donation. It's not ideal but it's more than some people have access to.

TheFormerPorpentiaScamander · 13/01/2021 15:21

There also has to be some sort of self discipline here also and those who are entitled but don’t need them should just apply for the vouchers / food because they can.
We weren't given a choice to apply for them or not, I had a email yesterday from DS1s school apologising for being late with a £15 voucher code. I suppose if I didn't need it (I do) I could ask them not to send me them. But, at his school at least, its an opt out. Rather than an opt in.

pointythings · 13/01/2021 15:29

Excellent news on the U-turn - but why is it that every bloody time this government needs to have its nose rubbed in its own corruption before it decides to do the right thing?

Spongebobsquarefringe · 13/01/2021 15:30

Most of us are just a couple of pay days away from being in the shit you know, could loose your job or anything, could end up in the food bank because UC claim is taking too long.

I’ve seen child poverty from working in a school, it’s absolutely heart breaking. Some children don’t have breakfast or dinner, school is their only food.

Pensioners were someone’s child maybe their parents should have left enough money in their wills for them so we don’t have to house and feed them oldies as well if that’s how people feel, pensioners are like children, they just older, they needy, need help with washing, feeding, supervision not all but some if we going to start picking, shouldn’t be about who is more worthy of a money bag of tuna and 3 frubes, your first reaction should be disgust followed by how can I help my community.

Spongebobsquarefringe · 13/01/2021 15:34

Olio has been brilliant in my local area I have been making packed lunches for people if they need it for their children, all they have to do is message me and it’s done, community is better than this shit show government at pulling together, I’ve seen a few posts offering the same.

Wheresmykimchi · 13/01/2021 15:36

SpongeBob I agree about the kids but I'm not sure why you're gunning for pensioners Hmm

Spongebobsquarefringe · 13/01/2021 15:45

@Wheresmykimchi oh someone was quoted further up saying about pensioners think it was page one but I wouldn’t let me quote a quote or tag, basically saying kids are parent’s responsibility so I’m saying well pensioners are someone’s children and we look after them so it’s no differ to really is it, we all someone’s child and doesn’t matter if we 8 or 80 if we need food then we need it.

Wheresmykimchi · 13/01/2021 15:50

I agree , but the point about parents should have left them money in their wills was crass.

Spongebobsquarefringe · 13/01/2021 15:55

@Wheresmykimchi I meant no offence I wrote how I talk and was a bit like Shock so typed without thinking, the money pot helps those in need and or shouldn’t matter as i said 8 or 80, if someone needs help with food, clothing etc we are all someone’s child, if there is people complaining about parents providing for their children then simply where does it end do you leave money so it’s not down to the state? These people have worked all their lives and deserve to be looked after.

Children fall on hard times through no fault of their own either

David Lammy has tweeted a photograph of a school meal bag from Finland; Meal bag given to school kids in Kuhmo, Finland Vs the UK but he doesn't say that the food in the photograph is allocated for a whole month. The Mayor of Kuhmo has tweeted a link;

The value of the bag is about 31 euros, which corresponds to the expenditure on catering raw materials on a monthly basis per student.

My dc get fsm. Our school hot lunch provider has been offering boxes since the get go (we could choose boxes or vouchers so that those who couldn't get to a shop for whatever reason had another option - I'm a single parent so have had a few boxes)

I've picked up one weeks box today. For each child it contains:

Pack of Bourbon biscuits
Small jar jam
3 eggs
Tin spaghetti hoops
Two tins tomatoes
Pack of pasta
Two tins beans
Small tin sweet corn
Some ham and turkey ham
Some mince
4 sausages
5 meatballs
Head of broccoli
2 large carrots
An onion
2 baking size potatoes
Two large apples
2 individual flavoured yoghurts
Loaf of bread
Some grated cheese
A mini pizza
A red pepper
A cucumber
Bottle of milk

That list is for one child, for one week. Just to put into context how utterly shitty the Chartwell box is. And these boxes also come from a private company that will have overheads etc to meet.

Clavinova · 13/01/2021 16:01

I guess people have seen the guidelines that were being talked about at PMQs

I didn't see PMQs but what is wrong with the guidelines?

Babysharkdoodoodood · 13/01/2021 16:05

@CrotchBurn

Okay I just read a guardian article that included a photo of one woman's food parcel (I've added it here). That is clearly not worth £30
Where's the bread? And why 2 peppers?
pointythings · 13/01/2021 16:12

Clav the issue isn't the guidelines, it's what people actually got. I mean, how mean spirited do you have to be to have someone sit there and cut tomatoes in half so someone gets half a tomato in their box?

Someone was coining it on these parcels. That's called corruption. It's not OK.

Clavinova · 13/01/2021 16:14

Clav the issue isn't the guidelines

Why has Keir Starmer tweeted;

The problem is that they show striking similarities with your Government’s guidelines. ?

GlobeUs · 13/01/2021 16:17

*Why has Keir Starmer tweeted;

Because he's the opposition.

Having read the amounts suggested on the guidelines they are greater than the photographs I have seen circulating. Personally, I don't think the guidelines are good in terms of nutritional value, however, the quantities are greater than what was actually being distributed in some cases.

pointythings · 13/01/2021 16:26

Oh Clav.

You can't even admit that these food parcels have been used to skim off money. You can't even admit that they have been hideously mean-spirited. You can't even show an ounce of compassion to the people who have been kicked in the teeth by these food parcels. So sad.

Clearly some of the packages are unacceptable - why did the schools involved send them out like that without complaining to the companies involved?

I also think it's sad that David Lammy and Keir Starmer have resorted to misrepresentation in their tweets. Not to mention the photograph of canapés from a charity event masquerading as lunch time snacks at a private school.

Why did schools send them out? Because they thought something was better than nothing, perhaps.

The point is that the companies thought they could get away with it. And that is appalling. But you go straight in and attack the Labour party rather than the government who have enabled these companies to chance their arm at a nice money spinner. There's no hope for you.

'resorted to misrepresentation' to do what? Similar question to you as to PPs. Do you honestly think that woman an David lammy got up and thought here tell you what will be a laugh, let's make up lies about starving weans.

You are focusing on the wrong point here. The company took money and provided a ridiculous service and children are starving. These are facts.

Whether someone did or didn't use the correct photo of canapes is irrelevant. Where is your anger? Your injustice? Semantics are all well and good but not in issues like this.
