To keep this erroneously delivered coffee machine

That I didn't order or pay for. I ordered a small value item (£25) and they also delivered (addressed to me with only my name on the label but with no charge to my account) a fancy coffee machine worth £200+.

I feel that as I didn't order or pay for it I should send it back. My friend thinks I should say nothing and thank my lucky stars.

What would you do? YABU to keep it. YANBU to send it back.

I once was sent a huge bag of parcels from a catalogue company. Instead of sending my parcel they had sent me all parcels dispatched from that warehouse (bedding etc) that day. I eventually sent it back but the company made such a fuss it took me hours and organise, so I won't ever buy from them again. It was hundred of pounds worth of goods and they made out like they were doing me a massive favour by collecting.

Be carefuyl. My daughter received a package from DPD. It looked like tech (not ordered) but could have been a Xmas present form her tech company employer - she had no idea what they do for senior staff at xmas. So she took it in. Once she had it opened it and was a brand new very expensive iphone. A few hours later DPD arrived to take it back as delivered by mistake. She handed it over. Big mistake. Apparently there is a known scam where they turn up , fake DPD drivers with the full uniform and take the phone to a fraudster who ordered it to your address but with their own email address. She has not lost any money but could have done.

After she felt very stupid and wished she had not handed it back to the fraudsters.

Years ago a colleague at work asked us a similar question. She had bought some furniture for her conservatory from a garden centre. It was £200, she was told she would receive a voucher for £20 to use against a future purchase. They made a mistake and sent her a voucher for £200. She asked us all should she keep it and keep quiet or let them know.
I was horrified to hear that I was the only one who would have notified them. Comments like " Well with their prices they can afford it" and " its their mistake so keep it" were given as reasons to keep it.
In my eyes it was tantamount to theft. Its the way I was brought up.

I once ordered something inexpensive and received a child’s kitchen. When I rang to get it collected they had no evidence I had it and the barcode on the delivery item matched the item I ordered.

I didn’t want the kitchen but an expensive coffee machine? Mmmmmm

Paquerette · 12/01/2021 21:40

@Agapinkus

It was Nespresso.
I knew it!!

I had a fairly large order for coffee pods from them a while ago. It was lost by a certain well known crappy delivery service. Nepresso replaced the order after several days, and when the original order arrived 10 days later with really nasty looking packaging, they still wanted it back (am betting the pods were sent out to someone else 🤢🤢🤢). They even expected me to wait in all day for collection. I just left them on my doorstep.

I run a business and am grateful when customers are honest. Someone could get in big trouble,

If you don't need it, send it back. Think of the good karma :-)

Porcupineintherough · 12/01/2021 21:44

Well done OP I must admit I'd have made less effort than you - I'd have packed it back up and told the company to come get it. If they didnt, I'd have kept/sold it without a qualm.

boomboom1234 · 12/01/2021 21:45

Keep it!

Notnownotneverever · 12/01/2021 22:00

I would call them and ask them to book a collection. Chances are they would say keep it as they won't want the hassle of arranging collection of it from you.

DasPepe · 12/01/2021 22:16

It’s called “brushing” whereby sellers knowingly send out goods in order to be able to increase their ranking through “genuine reviews”.
It sounds harmless.
Except next time you go to order something and really have to rely on the reviews (esp now that we cannot just go and look at items in store) you will find yourself frustrated as you won’t be able to trust reviews.
This happened to me ordering a gift and I know it sounds like a small inconvenience but it really grated on me as I could tell half of the reviews just sounded short and, well, fake.

It sounds as though this may have been through your recent purchase but often this isn’t so - which means the company has your details from elsewhere.

Of course - it could still be a genuine mistake based on your last order! I would check just in case given that detail.

Italiangreyhound · 12/01/2021 22:16

Contact the company. They may even let you keep it.

littlepieces · 12/01/2021 22:18

Please tell the seller, you'll feel better about it. About 18 months ago my partner ordered an iPad and we think it was delivered to another flat in our building by mistake, but retailer wouldn't have any of it because it was signed for at the address. Credit card wouldn't pay out through protections because there 'wasn't enough evidence' from either side. DP lost £800, meanwhile someone in our building is still enjoying his iPad.

womaninatightspot · 12/01/2021 22:18

If you get a subscription for Nespresso you can have one of their fancy machines for a pound!

diamondsr4u · 12/01/2021 22:19

Keep it. It was sent to you after all 😁

williowrosenburg · 12/01/2021 22:21

That's odd my manager is currently awaiting delivery of a coffee machine... it was meant to be delivered Saturday... then Monday I think..... but no one knows where it's gone!

DoubleTweenQueen · 12/01/2021 22:21

I ordered some shoes from Clarks - school shoes for two kids - six pairs, to try on and keep one pair each. They sent a huge box of ten pairs of shoes - all school shoes, but four pairs I hadn’t ordered. Two pairs in the same size for a boy and two for a little girl. I had pangs that some poor mum was somewhere waiting for her kids' school shoes that had been sent to me instead - about £160 worth. They were returned. Customer services did say thankyou, but I was more concerned about someone missing their school shoes...........it was a few days before the start of term. I don’t know why I’m sharing all this really..........

MintyMabel · 12/01/2021 22:25

I’d have sent it back too. Otherwise, every time I looked at it I would think “that’s not mine”

diamondsr4u · 12/01/2021 22:27

How did you just write this post today and already have it sent back.

Justcallmecaptainobvious · 12/01/2021 22:31

We’ve ended up with a couple of expensive items which were sent in error, but after numerous emails to the sellers asking if they’re going to arrange a courier to collect, we have decided are now ours! I’d always contact to have stuff sent back.

Having said that, my experience of nespresso customer service is so terrible that I’d have been tempted to keep it as I cannot imagine they would have been able to figure out what happened.

Sparklehead · 12/01/2021 22:39

This happened to me. I ordered a couple of bits from an art and craft supplier and was sent my bits plus a huge box of craft materials, pens, paint etc and 4 big rolls of coloured paper. I thought it must have been meant to go to a school and called a number of times to arrange for it to be redelivered. But the company told me to keep it and they’d resend the stuff to the correct address. This was a few years ago and my DC still haven’t got through it all!

AdultHumanFemale · 12/01/2021 22:40

Defo contact them because it is the right thing to do. Chances ate they will let you keep it rather than arrange for collection and postage etc.
I once had a very large order of bare root roses delivered to my new house, I could never have afforded them at the time. I called the prestigious grower who acknowledged the mistake but said, without hesitation, that I should keep them. Every summer I thank my lucky stars for this chance occurrence, and am so pleased I can enjoy them with a clear conscience.

Purpleheadgirl · 12/01/2021 22:40

Check you haven't signed up for a subscription in error......before Christmas some of those companies would send you a "free" machine if you ordered certain amount of capsules over the year

DoubleTweenQueen · 12/01/2021 22:53

@AdultHumanFemale Shock How lovely!

1Q84isHappening · 12/01/2021 22:59

You should contact them.

I once ordered 4 expensive items from a large company online and the order was somehow sent twice. I initially tried to refuse the second delivery but the courier was having none of it. I called numerous times over the course of a month (was promised calls back I never got). I also sent several emails explaining the situation to their customer services department. After two months of this I gave up and gifted the duplicate items to my sister.

GrumpyHoonMain · 12/01/2021 23:01

I would have kept it myself but I’m always up for a freebie
