A loaf and a block of cheese is not lunch for ten days

So some of the free school lunch boxes contain very little food.

Marcus Rashford condemns free school meal packages

“...a package, supposedly containing £30 worth of food to last for 10 days, comprising just a loaf of bread, some cheese, a tin of beans, two carrots, two bananas, three apples, two potatoes, a bag of pasta, three Frubes, two Soreen bars and a tomato”.

Can’t imagine what it’s like home schooling hungry kids. Would like to say I’m shocked but I’m not.

I'm not cross at you@LizFlowers. Flowers I'm cross that people still think this is only about lunch. For many children it's their only meal.

Wheresmykimchi · 12/01/2021 22:32

@AccidentallyOnPurpose👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

HerMammy · 12/01/2021 22:34

Our LA here in Scotland pays £3.50 per day direct to parents in receipt of free lunches whilst in lockdown, much better system.

ZazieSheHer · 12/01/2021 22:35

Covid: What free school meals are children supposed to get? Article from the BBC on what the parcels are supposed to contain.

This is what a box for 5 days is supposed to contain. Clearly quite a lot more in quantity and variety of foods.

A packed lunch at primary school is a sandwich, piece of fruit, yogurt and a piece of flapjack or similar. I guess they’re not really great value at the best of times but that box is even less than that! A loaf of bread, decent choice of filler, selection of fruit and veg packet of 9 frubes , and some flapjacks/ crisps/ cookies would be what I’d expect for a week

LivingOnAnIsland · 12/01/2021 22:37

@Wheresmykimchi

For many children and@LivingOnAnIsland That is the reality yes . It's to ensure that. And? I see you're still playirng word games and semantics through.

Do you have anything to add of use or are you just going to continue picking out random posts to pick out the wording and tehe aren't I clever?

If so, I suggest you find a trivial thread and not one where children are at stake.

Wow, you don't like it when people have a different opinion to you. You really think you have the right to tell me to find another thread because you've made a claim that isn't true and I've pointed it out to you? Did you become a bully because you were bullied at school?
Dddccc · 12/01/2021 22:38

I grew up that kid I snuck food out of school bins to feed my sisters at home so I know all about how fucked up this world is what I am saying is parents need to start putting kids first as 99% of the time its there faults

Feck sorry @LizFlowers that ws for @LivingOnAnIsland. Posted in fury Grin

Wheresmykimchi · 12/01/2021 22:41

@LivingOnAnIsland

another valuable contribution.

I didn't tell you to find another thread. I told you that you should contribute your own thoughts on the issue which thus far you havent - you've just played word games.

I'm fine with different opinions but you don't even have that, you're just here to make snide digs. Could you quote me where you've actually posted on the issue?

You didn't point out an untrue claim at all. You just asked obtuse questions.

As for your bullying comment , that's child poverty and bullying you've made light of in one night . And you wonder why I asked you what you're bringing to the thread grin

BungleandGeorge · 12/01/2021 22:43

It’s all very sad, lots of kids not on FSM are undoubtedly going hungry too, agree who cares what the reason is. Shame they can’t just pick up a lunch from outside school or something if needed

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 12/01/2021 22:44

And if they don't? What then?

It's a minority of parents anyways that can but won't. For the ones that can't,this type of shit just makes it even harder.

Illy605 · 12/01/2021 22:46

Absolutely blows my mind that there are actually people on here who think what was given in that box was reasonable for any child, regardless of age or situation. We should be doing fucking better by the impoverished children and teens in this country. Not accepting bullshit like this.

HerMammy · 12/01/2021 22:47

@ZazieSheHer
That’s quite good for just 5 lunches, 2 days sandwiches, 2 days baked potatoes, 1 day and omelette, fruit and yoghurts to snack.

Free school meals as a scheme is done under the assumption it's the ONLY meal of the day. Not just lunch.

How anyone can justify this whole Dominic gets a 40 grand pay rise is beyond me.

SunsetSenora · 12/01/2021 22:57

This company (run by a major donator of funds to the Tory party) has literally taken food away from hungry children and ripped off the tax payer. And not just those of us working now, but also those working for future generations who will have to pay off the debts these incompetents are running up for Nightingale hospitals not used. PPE not suitable for use, and now food not given to kids. And because the pampered twats making these decisions pontificated about how all those people needing these boxes would spend their vouchers on drugs rather than food.

VinylDetective · 12/01/2021 22:57
@Wheresmykimchi i only said what I said because someone else suggested that MPs can claim expenses for food, and that they couldn’t survive on that list for lunches. I think the list listed was reasonable for lunches.
And I’m not sure what outgoings you mean?
Oh please. We all remember the MPs’ expenses scandal. We’ve all seen the subsidised menu from the House of Commons restaurant. We all know very generous expenses are paid on top of their £82k salary. Please don’t insult our intelligence or try to tell us that food is acceptable - it’s not.

Putting tuna and cheese into money bags and cutting peppers in half to give to people to last them somewhere between 5 and 10 days - shocking

Surely this violates many food hygiene issues

Carryingon · 12/01/2021 23:08

Judging by the success of the donate a bag of food drive at Christmas it would be better if the community fed the local children (not that they should have to).

VinylDetective · 12/01/2021 23:08
@Wheresmykimchi

There was ample food there for a child, for 5 lunches.
If you have a food parcel, your kids aren't starving!
There wasn’t and you can repeat it until the thread runs out and you’ll still be wrong.

Clicketyclick21 · 12/01/2021 23:11

The caterer at my dc's school is Chartwell & the head wisely decided not to contract them to provide the fsm lunch boxes. The school has ordered meal boxes from Morrisons instead. Much better value & the whole £30 is being used for food instead of on costs.

Jellycatspyjamas · 12/01/2021 23:26

@LatteToday sorry, my mistake instead they get to eat in the “run at a loss” restaurants in the Comons, so effectively subsided by the tax payer, and I’ll be there’s not a mouldy half tomato anywhere to be seen.
