A loaf and a block of cheese is not lunch for ten days

So some of the free school lunch boxes contain very little food.

Marcus Rashford condemns free school meal packages

“...a package, supposedly containing £30 worth of food to last for 10 days, comprising just a loaf of bread, some cheese, a tin of beans, two carrots, two bananas, three apples, two potatoes, a bag of pasta, three Frubes, two Soreen bars and a tomato”.

Can’t imagine what it’s like home schooling hungry kids. Would like to say I’m shocked but I’m not.

Obviously a company will costs so the entire £30 will not go on food, I very much doubt it costs the company £25 per box.

It doesn’t even look like real cheese, it looks like those weird slices people put in burgers.

LegoPirateMonkey · 12/01/2021 10:19

And the middleman and associated costs could be cut out if they provided a £30 supermarket voucher to the parents. You can restrict the use of the voucher so it can’t buy alcohol/tobacco if concerned that some parents wouldn’t spend it on food.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 12/01/2021 10:20

£30 would be £3 a day. The school meals at my DDs school are £2 a day for hot meal plus pudding (or sandwich option). That's not even £20 of food bearing in mind that £20 also includes the cooks and utilities.

According to the nutrition lessons I've just done with my Yr3 DD, that wouldn't pass as a the 'balanced meal' It may be ok for one week of lunches (except the lack of some sort of spread for the bread). But the fruit, veg and bread wouldn't last 2 weeks without going mouldy for example. N

Godimabitch · 12/01/2021 10:20

It's obviously not 30 quid worth of food and is a little tight for 10 days but I could make it work for me, and I'm an adult. It depends how much work they're having to put into it. Someone is buying assembling and distributing them. They have to pay for the premises they're using and all levels of employees.

I think the cause of the problem is that vouchers were misused so the government had to find an alternative that isn't as good but is better than just handing parents money when not all parents will spend that on food. The most vulnerable kids are the ones with shit parents, not poor parents.

Mrsjayy · 12/01/2021 10:20

Is a fsm child not entitled to a frube the second week or do they just space then out between their soreen crumb ?

DenisetheMenace · 12/01/2021 10:21

SFHJ

Unpopular opinion.
Sorry but it’s for school lunches why should it be £30 a week, it’s not for a whole weeks shop@ZazieSheHer”

Incorrect opinion. It’s for ten days, not 5.
How much do you spend on your childrens’ lunches? Do you think £3 per day is excessive?

AWeeBit · 12/01/2021 10:21

They didn't have to create food parcels at all! They could have just distributed vouchers via schools, with no overheads whatsoever, just fucking send them a list of codes. Fucking hell.

zaphodbeeble · 12/01/2021 10:22

Feeding a reception child and feeding a year 11 are two very different things, are primary food parcels the same as secondary ?

JazzyGeoff · 12/01/2021 10:22

The vouchers weren't misused, they just weren't of any benefit to their Tory mates.

But that's a lot more than a loaf of bread and a block of cheese?
AWeeBit · 12/01/2021 10:22

And that's not even touching on the fact that fucking tuna has been portioned out into money bags.

This is a scandal.

80sMum · 12/01/2021 10:22

That's disgraceful! There's no way that's £30 worth of food. The only vegetables are two carrots! Two carrots for 10 lunches?! There should be at least a kilo of carrots if that's the only veg!

I'm guessing the feed back on the last time was negative
CupcakesK · 12/01/2021 10:24

It doesn’t even look like it would meet most schools’ packed lunch policy in terms of what parents are supposed to send their children to school with

WrongKindOfFace · 12/01/2021 10:24

From the photos I’ve seen on Twitter there doesn’t seem to be much difference.
5zeds · 12/01/2021 10:24

What are you on ! Please do is a menu for 10 days for 1 school child !

Main
Two cheese on toast
One tomato sandwich
Two carrot soup and bread
Two baked potato and beans
Three pasta and cheese sauce

Pudding
two bananas,
three apples,
three Frubes,
two Soreen bars

10 mains/10 puddings

As I said it’s light on protein and definitely NOT £30

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 12/01/2021 10:25

A tomato sandwich? Who eats a fucking tomato sandwich?

Roystonv · 12/01/2021 10:26

Just so sad and angry (and naive I suppose to think it would be any different) that yet again a company seeming to provide a sensible much needed service at a time of great need is only thinking of the money and the shareholders. Of course they have to cover costs and pocket some profit but they are always just too greedy and self seeking. Everything is how can we benefit and never what can we do to help the best way possible.

CatVsChristmasTree · 12/01/2021 10:26

@zaphodbeeble

The real issue is not making the food last but that the company with the government contract are profiting from fsm kids
Yes, this. Chartwells get to pocket the cash at the expense of children.
zoemum2006 · 12/01/2021 10:26

Just give people the voucher to spend in the supermarket like an actual human being.

Food parcel delivery should only be for people who are vulnerable, can't get to the shops and can't get delivery slots. Emergency use only.

I get there is less opportunity for profiteering though....

WinterStrawbsAreLikeTurnip · 12/01/2021 10:27

@ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets me they're yummy. Try it.

Mrsjayy · 12/01/2021 10:27

*And that's not even touching on the fact that fucking tuna has been portioned out into money bags.

Is it really tuna in a bag 😲 surely that goes against every food hygiene rule there is !

Redcrayons · 12/01/2021 10:27

@5zeds

Pasta/bread/potatoe. Main carb Fruit/soreen loaf/frubes. Pudding Beans/carrots/cheese. Flavour/protein

I’d say a little light on protein but probably enough for ten lunches

If you’ve got one child who eats like a not very fussy bird.

Not to mention, it’s supposed to be 30 quids worth of food.

You’d think in 9 months they would have managed to organize something better than this.

Thesearmsofmine · 12/01/2021 10:28

It’s a joke. £30 of food should be far more food and variety, what is wrong with a block of cheese? I can easily provide a decent amount of food for £30.
