A loaf and a block of cheese is not lunch for ten days

So some of the free school lunch boxes contain very little food.

Marcus Rashford condemns free school meal packages

“...a package, supposedly containing £30 worth of food to last for 10 days, comprising just a loaf of bread, some cheese, a tin of beans, two carrots, two bananas, three apples, two potatoes, a bag of pasta, three Frubes, two Soreen bars and a tomato”.

Can’t imagine what it’s like home schooling hungry kids. Would like to say I’m shocked but I’m not.

I don’t care what catering gymnastics you can do that to make that last 10 lunches but I am furious that cost the tax payers £30.

When they say we spent £xx million feeding the poorest children what they really mean is we spent all your money lining the pockets of our old school friends and threw the poor some crappy bread!

Wheresmykimchi · 12/01/2021 22:03

@LivingOnAnIsland

Nope. It doesn't. As PP said the five day figure has been plucked out of their arses to cover this.

And you know this because? Let's see the evidence.

The woman who originally posted it was told ten and it became five after it was posted ojn twitter are you calling her a liar?
Wheresmykimchi · 12/01/2021 22:03

@BentBastard

It seems a minority view but frankly I would give money rather than vouchers even.

As many have pointed out, there's more to it than just the actual food. No good having a spud if you've no power to cook it. Or a tin of soup if you've no pot to heat it in. Or if you have no transport and can't get to a supermarket and rely on a small independent corner shop.

Honestly treating people like they can't make decisions because they have little or no income is shocking, especially when we currently live in a society where some of our most valuable members probably fall into the FSM category.

Makes me feel ashamed.

I'm with you.

But if it's for five days, it didn't cost the taxpayer £30. It's for five lunches. Not intended to feed a family for a week, nor a child for a week. It's five lunches.

Absolutely fuck this cronying-jobs-for-the-boys bunch of absolute cunts that are masquerading as our government.

Dddccc · 12/01/2021 22:05

Omg I am sick of hearing about this its was meals for 5 days ok and you can make 9 kids meals out of it the food was done last minute, Tuesday to Friday then Monday to Friday you can easy make 9 meals there was 8 slices of cheese, a full loaf of bread , 2 jackets, beans, fruit, carrots, pasta easy 9 meals plus snacks they are not feeding a kid 3 course meals, honestly it was also not £30 as it was 1 week so £15 and no it is not that amount of food in cost but they did what they could last minute as they didn't know they would have to do this until schools were told they were closing, so this was a last minute meal pack also the woman who took this one was offered vouchers she refused for food instead

Wheresmykimchi · 12/01/2021 22:06

@LivingOnAnIsland

Are you aware that the whole point of FSM is that it's the only meal a child gets?
So it's not a lunch. It's their main meal

Are you saying you think it's OK? Semantics are all well and good but these are real children and your attitude irks me.

awishes · 12/01/2021 22:07

Hang on its not supposed to be £30 of food for 10 lunches.
It's just over £13 per week for one child's FSM.
I agree done look really lacking but included in the cost has to be purchase cost, admin and delivery.
Just the same way as the hsm is at school.
The £15 per week is because of the previous offer and that offer stands this time only if the school's meal provider cannot provide the hamper.
Don't forget these will have been put together quickly and there's the opportunity to improve next week.

Wasn’t intended for 5 days. Was intended for 10 days and the company backtracked when people started complaining.

Also weren’t the only company to send out such a pitiful offering for 10 days of lunches.

Come on, even last minute it isn’t bloody difficult to come up with 10 simple lunch ideas and knock it together.

LizFlowers · 12/01/2021 22:09
@LizFlowers you do realise that for some children on FSM the food provided by the school is either their main meal or their only meal.

Do you still think it's adequate and more than enough?
Certainly not sufficient for a whole day, I remember mine used to eat like a horse. However it is meant to be for lunch only.

Sick of hearing about starving children?

Personally I'm sick of hearing about th billion pound contract or Dominic Cummings pay rise while they back handed FSM to their corrupt pals , but each to their own.

Wheresmykimchi · 12/01/2021 22:11

@LizFlowers are you being deliberately obtuse? You say yourself it's not sufficient for a whole day but most children on FSM only have one bloody meal a day!!!!

Why join the thread then if you're so sick of it?

Just to have your self righteous mini rant of how it's so amazing and good and how much you could do with it?

Looking after and providing for disadvantaged and vulnerable children should never be a race to the bottom.

Dddccc · 12/01/2021 22:15

No not sick if hearing about starving children but that bag was for 5 days and most ppl could make it go to 10 also they are claiming 15 pound a week not 30 it was a heap of crap from 1 twitter post they are not feeding full family its for 1 child 10 meals also most ppl who receive these have a higher income to me but we can't get them, so what I am sick of is ppl saying its not enough food it is if you go off recommended portion sizes for a child it is more them enough the issue is we over feed kids these days

Empressofthemundane · 12/01/2021 22:17

So, because we don’t trust a minority of parents to care for their children, we allow a private company to pillage their lunch budget instead.

I trust parents more.

Wheresmykimchi · 12/01/2021 22:19

For many children and@LivingOnAnIsland
That is the reality yes . It's to ensure that. And?
I see you're still playirng word games and semantics through.

Do you have anything to add of use or are you just going to continue picking out random posts to pick out the wording and tehe aren't I clever?

If so, I suggest you find a trivial thread and not one where children are at stake.

Dddccc · 12/01/2021 22:19

Its also not about what I can do its what I learned to do with no money my child comes first and if that his lunch is a 19p pack of noodles and an 16p apple at least he has food in his stomach I would welcome one of these to take the pressure off what I am going to feed him today

CharlottaCarlotta · 12/01/2021 22:20

I dont know many folk who coul make a loaf last 10 days let aloone the spoonful of tuna.

The issue is not that we overfeed kids. And if you think it's a heap of crap why would you want it?

Nohomemadecandles · 12/01/2021 22:21

Any parent shitty enough to flog a child's food voucher for drugs isn't making soup from half a carrot and a salad tomato either. That argument doesn't work. The child goes without either way.

Give people some dignity. Let them buy food that works for them. Why so heartless and judgy?

Dawnlassie · 12/01/2021 22:23

How about your kids munch yourself. Just a thought.

LizFlowers · 12/01/2021 22:24
@LizFlowers are you being deliberately obtuse? You say yourself it's not sufficient for a whole day but most children on FSM only have one bloody meal a day!!!!
I'm sorry about that and if I could help in any way I would. However the government has so far agreed to help out with one meal, lunch - in lieu of free school meals. I haven't come across schools providing more than one meal a day.

We can campaign for people to get more - extra child benefit, food vouchers, etc. Everyone should have a decent cooked meal at home in the evening. I'd be happy for my bit of tax to go towards that. What are other people doing to help?

I don't know why you are so cross with me, my comment was based on what was provided for a child's lunch.

Dddccc · 12/01/2021 22:24

Let's think because I struggle to afford basic thing while being furloughed from work and its not just fucking bread it had pasta and potatoes so break it down to 4 sandwiches, 2 beans on jackets, 2 carrot soups, 2 pasta meals with left over cheese and the Tomato plus there was youghurts and fruit so if you are really on the bread line you learn to use what you have and be grateful for what you can get

How are children overfed if that's their only meal/main meal?

I don't know in what world you live in but in my world, I bought food and cereal from my measly TA wage so "my " kids could have breakfast, I've brought fruit in , I've had parents in tears begging for a sandwich for their kid because they had no food in the house, I've had kids turn up at school after they've been made homeless during the night.

I don't give a shit what kind of parents they have,or how much money they earn or if they have more or less than me. I care about the kids , because no child should suffer or go hungry. Because whatever their situation and the reasons why, it's not their fault, they don't have a choice.

And those kids will be the ones in the future paying for your pension , NHS etc. You should be wanting the best for them, to ensure they have the best outcome. Not bitch and moan that 8 slices of cheese are more than enough.
