Hi everyone just interested in opinions would you buy for yourself or friend a candle or those diffuser sticks (if each were equally beautiful, scented). Thanks

Candles maybe, diffusers no - I hate that they all say on them that they’re toxic to aquatic life with long lasting effects Sad

Speaking as someone who’s house burnt down in 6 minutes I’d get a diffuser. Candles are the biggest cause of house fires, even though it’ll never happen to you.

I refused to have candles for 6 years. Bought one for the first time at Christmas and it managed to set fire to something else, even though bearing in mind my history I’m obsessionally careful.

Candles for me

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2021 11:33

Diffusers. But electric oil diffuser and some good essential oils would be better than sticks.
DH liked candles in the bathroom, till we realised how much soot they produced.

Puzzled re 'No diffusers if they have pets that could come into contact with them' - sure, but even more of a bad idea to have candles a pet might knock over?

MajesticWhine · 13/01/2021 11:38

Diffusers work all day and every day. A nice posh diffuser from white company is a lovely gift. I have dogs but they have no access to a shelf or book case so that's not an issue Confused

Yeah it was 6 years ago. Possibly one of the most traumatic things I’ve ever been through! No minutae of life. Safety pins, egg cups, pens, printers etc etc etc.

The inventory was 30 pages of Excel! Itemised😖Dh and l nearly killed each other.

I'm in camp diffuser because real candles scare the hell out of me due to fire risk. I love candles though so have LED ones everywhere, even in DDs room.

schmockdown · 13/01/2021 12:18

I've got a wax melt thing, smell lasts longer than candles and no naked flame.

RincewindsHat · 13/01/2021 12:18

Diffusers, I used to burn a lot of candles but they get soot on the walls and I hate that. White Company diffusers are lovely, and so are some from Next!

Sugarplumfairy65 · 13/01/2021 13:19

Whatever you choose, if its for someone with pets, some essential oils are extremely toxic to pets. Fragrance oils are the safer option.

BuffaloCauliflower · 13/01/2021 13:25

I buy both and wax melts. My house is clean I just like a nice smell! I would only buy anything scented for a very close friend I knew the taste of well as scent preferences are so personal, it’s a risky buy if you’re not sure.

Also agree with PP above, wax lyrical diffusers are excellent and the only ones I’ve found with proper scent throw. Assam and white cedar is my favourite. Ohros candles (small business) are my fave of those.

Every radiator in our house has a bar of Nesti Dante soap tucked behind it. Different scent in every room. It beats any candle or diffuser I’ve ever tried.

sophiasnail · 13/01/2021 13:50

I love yankee candles and almost always have one burning whilst I am working from home as a kind of non-food based reward for motivating myself! I love trying all the different ones (people who are sniffy about yankee can bog off!)

I'd definitely go for candles as well as the diffusers hardly have a lasting fragrance. I find the berry scented candles have quite a strong fragrance so you actually notice a scent.
I've had to start experimenting with strong scented candles to mask the cannabis smell from nextdoor and berries and spice seem to do the job
