To give M&S the award for the worst case of vanity sizing on the highstreet?!

Ordered some clothes for DH's GM, who is in her 90's and slim, but does not like to feel waistbands etc. so DH's Mum (GM lives with DH's parents) asked me to order her size 14 in everything (nightwear, elasticated trousers, cardigans). Anyway, they arrive and DMIL calls me to say can I reorder it all again in a size 10, as what has arrived in size 14, comfortably fits DMIL, who is definitely an 18 in M&S and has 'got a bit spare from Christmas' (her words not mine, and haven't we all!) GMIL usually takes a 14 in other shops and previously in M&S and is not overly skinny, but slim, with an 'overhang' from abdo surgery in her 30's.

AIBU to think that this is ridiculous?

I find M&S tight compared to other shops.

I also don't agree with them vanity sizing. I have things I bought from there years ago that area size smaller than I have to buy now (so they are a size 16, where I definitely need at least an 18 from M&S now). THe old 16s still fit me better than the new 18s (and no - they haven't stretched)

BarbaraofSeville · 11/01/2021 15:55

Does no-one know what DGM looks like? Is she very tall? Because otherwise no-one's going to think she's slim and fits into an M&S 14.

Because that's what size I take and I'm 5'7 and far from 'slim'.

Almostslimjim · 11/01/2021 15:58

Next and M&S are dreadful for this. I'm a generous 16 most of the time. I'm a 12 in M&S and 12/14 in next.

BooFuckingHoo2 · 11/01/2021 16:01

@BooFuckingHoo2 living up to your username I see. Why are you being so defensive - the poster you quoted didn’t say otherwise?

Because there are threads like this all the time on mumsnet and it smacks of “how dare that woman think she’s a 10 when she’s clearly a 14”, it’s very unpleasant.

I don’t believe people’s worth comes from their dress size, so there’s no “vanity” about it.

AriesTheRam · 11/01/2021 16:01

Next are bad too.I can fit in a 10 bottom from there when atm I'm a large 12.

HappyThursdays · 11/01/2021 16:02

Zara are the worst but the other way round. They must model their clothes on stick men.

it's the inconsistency - just agree on measurements and stick to it. Can't be that hard can it?!

fellrunner85 · 11/01/2021 16:05

Yeah. Next are the same as well, as pps have said. I'm an 8 in both Next and M&S, but a 10 everywhere else. And a 12 in some brands of running kit.

M&S sizing is overall bonkers though. DD has age 6-7 clothes from there which are far too small on her, and age 3-4 trousers that fit. She's four...!

Dixiechickonhols · 11/01/2021 16:06

I’m a 10 in the m & s skinny Sophia jeans - size 12 In Next jeans and have a tummy apron. I’m bmi 23 so not skinny. I lost a lot of weight and find I have to order a 10 and 12 in Boden, Joules, Next and try on and return. I have a mix of size 10 and 12 clothes.

ZadieZadie · 11/01/2021 16:06

@BooFuckingHoo2 I do know that....

But look at the models on the Autograph range. The styling is trying to copy fashion led brands, and the models are all thin. No way are they wearing unaltered clothes.

I didn't think I'd need to spell that out, but I'm glad I've given you a chance to be offended, if that's what keeps you entertained.

IfTheSockFits · 11/01/2021 16:09

Why are women's trousers (& skirts come to that) in sizes 10/12/14 etc anyway? Why don't they just do them by waist measurement & length like they do with men's trousers?

GhostPepperTears · 11/01/2021 16:09

I find M&S fairly consistent compared to other brands I buy (Fatface, Seasalt, Monsoon, a variety from JL, Trespass, Craghoppers etc.)

Every now and again I get an odd item that is way too big for me at my usual size - but it does tend to just be the odd one.

MadameButterface · 11/01/2021 16:10

@SchrodingersImmigrant

You all shut maybe shut up with the teeny tinies. Imagine someone would be calling people massive massies on threadsHmm Both is unacceptable.

If you have issues with your weight and it makes you this bitter, don't go on threads about sizes and or weight.

Haha, no issues here, otoh i think people who never miss a chance to congratulate themselves on how slim they are and look down their nose at anyone who isn’t have plenty of their own.
ashmts · 11/01/2021 16:11

Can't say I agree, I ordered stuff from M&S recently in sizes from 8-12 (I wanted some of the jumpers oversized) and they were true to size. In fact I'm a 6/8 and the size 8 work trousers I got were actually on the tight side. Maybe I just got lucky.

canyouseethem · 11/01/2021 16:13

Whistles, god yes! now down to an XS, Used to be at 12 in m&s in the 90's, now the 8 can be roomy.....

SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/01/2021 16:15

Same like people who never miss a chance to insult others for their weight, eh @MadameButterface... The only one bringing comparisons and issues on a thread which is about inconsistent and probably incorrect sizes are you and aptly named Boo.

Stop randomly attacking people for not being fat and daring to talk about inconsistent sizing. And fyi, there is a thread about "vanity pounds" in weightloss section (which is actually very friendly and helpful place for all sizes...) so it's obviously not that bad term to warrant personal insults on slimmer than yourself posters.

Sparklfairy · 11/01/2021 16:16

@Clymene

Ah I see the MN teeny tinies are out in force.
Didn't take long for the skinny shamers to crawl out of the woodwork Hmm
ilovemydogandMrObama · 11/01/2021 16:17

@SOLINVICTUS

M&S I find quite true to size. Next, on the other hand.... Still, better than the other way round. These are the sizes of my trouser collection: M&S 12 long Boden 12 long Hobbs 12 long Jaeger 12 long Next 10 regular Zara 16 H&M don't do trousers long enough

Tops:
M&S 14
Boden 14
...you get the picture...
H&M 18 or XXL
Zara XXL.

True about Zara. Grin
NuniaBeeswax · 11/01/2021 16:17

Blah blah blah obesity crisis, something something a size 10 user to be a 24 back in the 80s, yadda yadda a size 4 drowns me... Am I doing it right?

ILoveShula · 11/01/2021 16:17

Here we go again, another M&S bashing thread.
Their clothes fit me in my usual size.

How many 90-something women are likely to be a size 14?

BanningTheWordNaice · 11/01/2021 16:18

I thought I knew you for a second but no M&S have just done this to quite a few people recently 🤣

MedwaymumofMany · 11/01/2021 16:20

Oh no! I have just had some size leggings delivered. If they fit I’m going to worry I’m really a size 36 and not very self aware. 18 always fits me, until it’s washed when everything then seems to have shrunk about 2 sizes.

Btw I’m fat. That’s just a fact, it’s reflected in my bmi, not my dress size 😘

QueenPawPaws · 11/01/2021 16:24

Sizing is screwed up everywhere
I have two dresses
ASOS standard range, size 14
ASOS curve (similar style) I guessed might come up larger. No, I needed a size 24! I'm usually a 14-16...
my wardrobe has everything from a 12-24 in

dotoallasyouwouldbedoneby · 11/01/2021 16:25

Love M&S but their sizing is all over the place.

unmarkedbythat · 11/01/2021 16:27

My mum buys M&S jeans only because the sizing makes her happy :)

If I need an ego boost I (used to) try on clothes at Asda, because at Asda I can wear teeny tiny sizes. If I need to make myself feel like shit I try on clothes at H&M because in their trousers I am a beached whale.

In any case, whatever the label says I am aware of my weight and capable of understanding my BMI so whether I am in a 8 or an 18 doesn't matter. I have never found my expanding belly causes my brain to stop working.

SpilltheTea · 11/01/2021 16:28

It's so annoying that every shop has different size guides, instead of going by inches like men do. It's such a faff finding jeans, ordering different sizes and hoping one will fit. I can't comment on M&S, but I find Next tops come up quite big.
