Stop posting fear mongering bullshit not based in fact

School closures until September
Restrictions permanently

None of this speculation is based in fact. All you are doing is making people fearful who are already struggling

Perhaps you are scared and want to project that onto others. Or you're a miserable cunt who wants others to be scared and miserable with you.

I don't know. But whatever your reason, think about the impact your factually inaccurate speculation might have on others.

OP posts:
Puzzledandpissedoff · 10/01/2021 22:50

I'm more than able to consider that maybe someone is worried and seeking reassurance

And that's fair enough, but I'm not sure how they can possibly be calmed by the inevitable ramping-up which follows
The "How long will this go on?" is a classic; ask, and it goes something like this:

  1. I reckon around easter
  2. Definitely not before easter and probably summer
  3. No way before autumn and next winter will be worse
  4. Not until 2022/23/24 at the soonest
  5. Never
Crimblecrumble1990 · 10/01/2021 22:50

I think I've seen the posts you are referring to in your OP.

I do find though when I then search the posters username, I can see more of their mn history and most of the time they seem really quite unwell (mentally). I haven't just assumed this, it has been stated in posts. And then people are reading it and thinking that some poor persons anxiety is the truth...

polkadotpixie · 10/01/2021 22:59

YANBU OP, the competitive doom-mongering on MN is absolutely out of control. I find the joy some people are taking in making anxious people feel even more terrified about this situation far scarier than COVID itself tbh

Cherrysoup · 10/01/2021 23:02

Don’t think it’s helpful to repeat fake news. Confused

pilotsprincess · 10/01/2021 23:51

Yes yes yes👏🏼
So much fear mongering on Mumsnet.
The misery is real

Russellbrandshair · 14/01/2021 10:16

Have you ever considered that when people ask if you think schools will be shut until September are possibly themselves genuinely worried. And perhaps hoping will say no and be reassuring

Um.... yes, the OP HAS, which is why they are saying it’s wrong to catastrophise when people are already in a fragile mental state. That’s the entire crux of this thread lol

How is helping someone who is genuinely anxious to tell them “things will NEVER go back to normal, no school until 2025, masks FOREVER”????

loulouljh · 14/01/2021 10:18

I think some people are enjoying the misery!!!!

Scarlettpixie · 14/01/2021 10:28

I think it is human nature to want to talk about things but it is wrong to present speculation as fact. I have only really seen discussion but I am not on here all the time. You get the occasional person who is just doom mongering but they usually get short shrift. It is what mumsnet does. Some are worried and want to talk about it. That’s fine.

That aside I think all coronavirus threads should be posted on or moved to the coronavirus board - including this one!

I haven’t seen anything like this.

Someone earlier was asking if people though schools would be back after feb half term. Answers were mixed.

upsidedownwavylegs · 14/01/2021 10:45

Some of the people catastrophising are anxious as anything and looking for reassurance and should be sympathised with (although not indulged because it’s unhelpful) but there are definitely some people who are just setting out to act the goat. E.g. the person lying about knowing that the NHS are planning for schools not going back until September or whatever it was they said. Those people don’t deserve sympathy, yes, they probably are friendless losers in real life which is a shame but they’re probably friendless losers because they’re as wholly unpleasant in real life as their fictional personas are on the Internet.

Bluntness100 · 14/01/2021 10:50

Very odd folks saying they haven’t seen it. That can only be because you’re not reading the Covid threads, it’s all over them. Proper scaremongering, it’s beyond ridiculous. People post things like they are fact. It’s been happening since this whole thing started.

Why’s this relevant. I have and so habe plenty of others

Are you trying to make out people are lying? I can’t imagine another reason to think it’s relevant you personally haven’t read it.

AuntieStella · 14/01/2021 10:52

I think misrepresenting threads - the 'how long schools closed for? September? was a discussion of relevant factors and the weight of evidence supporting various scenarios

I think it is wrong to dismiss threads as scaremongering, especially as one that fits your description was the very antithesis of that

If you think a thread is tipping into scaremongering, then it's always best to tackle it on the thread, and post the evidence which gives support for different theories and prognoses

Writing off as 'scaremongering' all discussion of possible future scenarios because some are less positive than others, does us all a disservice. We simple cannot kick realism into touch

I agree with that completely. I found the ‘how long will schools be closed for’ thread really helpful in terms of looking at the different factors and perspectives and how they influence possible scenarios. That’s partly why the liars/wind up merchants are so irritating - they’re like toddlers screaming for attention while mummy is talking to another adult.
Russellbrandshair · 14/01/2021 10:58

I haven’t seen anything like this

are you joking? I see threads saying this on a DAILY basis

I see OTT scaremongering on here daily and I'm not on here for hours.

People that say it doesnt exist probably either dont want to admit it because it invalidates their point or they skip over it without registering it.

I suspect its the former

ivefuckinghadenoughnow · 14/01/2021 11:00

Totally agree OP, sick of seeing such negativity.
I'm determined not to be dragged down by it, even if sometimes it feels like drowning in the negative stuff
