Stop posting fear mongering bullshit not based in fact

orientalknife · 10/01/2021 17:58

School closures until September
Restrictions permanently

None of this speculation is based in fact. All you are doing is making people fearful who are already struggling

Perhaps you are scared and want to project that onto others. Or you're a miserable cunt who wants others to be scared and miserable with you.

I don't know. But whatever your reason, think about the impact your factually inaccurate speculation might have on others.

UpShutTheFuck - oi take that back about BF! 🙎🏻‍♀️

SchrodingersImmigrant · 10/01/2021 18:51

For some people this is the only thing they have going. We have trolls about all kind of extremely upsetting things. I can easily believe someone is sitting be the pc and is on purpose targetting vulnerable people with missing like this. Let's be frank, it appears that most MN has anxiety, what better target for these bastards who will then sit there and laugh😑

bookworm14 · 10/01/2021 18:54

YANBU. I’ve felt sad and frightened all afternoon because of a thread quoting some doctor saying that we’ll basically need restrictions forever and the vaccines won’t stop thousands of people dying. I can’t live like this forever.

Speedyspunker · 10/01/2021 18:59

@bookworm14 please don't let this stuff get to you. Think about how far we've already come with treatments and vaccines. We've made so much more progress than most of us could have imagined. Another poster mentioned how quickly society returned to normal after the Spanish Flu and that's true of most pandemics. With the progress we're making with treatments and vaccines, there's no reason why it shouldn't also be true of this pandemic. Take careFlowers

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2021 19:02

YANBU. So much stuff posted without thinking and paraded as fact. Spurious sources and dubious links. Really not helpful.

Russellbrandshair · 10/01/2021 19:04

@bookworm14

Please don’t take any notice. The “doctor” they are referring to is likely Barry, their brother in laws neighbours builder on Facebook. I listen to a lot of doctors - I work with them and have not heard a single one say anything as remotely stupid as that. By that rationale, we would still be trying to dodge Spanish flu wouldn’t we?

TomorrowIsAnotherDae · 10/01/2021 19:05

YANBU - I reported a couple of scaremongering posts but MNHQ kept them up. People get caught up in the drama and then feel the need to pile on more false claims themselves.

orientalknife · 10/01/2021 19:32

Some people are having a field day off this

A lifetime's worth of drama and negativity to feed their own misery

I'm not denying the situation isn't hard and even tragic for some. I'm not suggesting we should be Pollyanna every second of the day. But we are equipped to cope with the hardship which is real and true. There will be an end to this and bullshit crackpot theories that it won't end are utterly stupid and malignant.

@Laiste

YANBU however i haven't personally heard or read either of those examples. To be fair mind you i haven't been on MN much for a few days so i might just have missed it.
I've seen both on here multiple times recently.

It's an absolute pit of misery and negativity at the moment.

Bookworm, if you're not already get yourself over to the Good News thread on the Coronavirus board and mute everything else! ☺️
LikeIDo · 10/01/2021 19:45

Have also reported multiple of these threads for being outside of the Coronavirus board but MN don't seem to care. It's such a PITA that you can't avoid them anywhere. What's the point of having a dedicated board if you don't use it.

lovelemoncurd · 10/01/2021 19:46

These things don't scare me personally. I just think 'that's bollocks' and ignore it.

Perhaps your thread should read 'people need to stop believing everything they read'

I think people are entitled to voice their opinions or concerns and others can choose not to read or block or hide as they wish.

AnxiousAlpaca · 10/01/2021 19:46

I know what thread @bookworm14 is referring to because I feel the same now after reading it Sad I can only blame myself really I just shouldn’t open them. But it’s the same compulsion that leads my to google any symptom I have of illness and then catastrophize. The thing is I am able to think critically and I know deep down this will end, but my mental health is always there saying, “but what if,” and it impacts my judgement.

I read that one too.

But also lots of people on there pointing out how ridiculous it was and that most experts are saying the opposite.

It's hard though when feeling down about all of it to see any positives, and we latch on to the negative post.

I agree with the op - have read some pretty awful scaremongering this weekend on here

Funkypolar · 10/01/2021 19:48

When has Mumsnet ever been a nice, happy, supportive place?

tofuschnitzel · 10/01/2021 19:53

I saw numerous people tell an OP not to bother their GP with a health issue they were having. It's bloody dangerous to discourage anyone from seeking medical advice. Lots of NHS services are running as normal! You can still get blood tests and GPs are still prescribing medicines. It is absolute madness to suggest otherwise, and it has made me really cross.

cannotchange · 10/01/2021 19:55

Absolutely OP - I said this at the very beginning about Mumsnet

I can't help myself but go and read some of the CV threads, but I would say 90% of my anxiety over covid stems from fear mongering on here. I can be having an OK day and then I'll read something on here and it will bring me right down

Someone before was going on about catching the virus from chip and pin machines !!!

Mumsnet won't police this as the current situation will be driving a lot of traffic to this site

cannotchange · 10/01/2021 19:58

Yes I saw one about an daughter in law with the most horrific back pain that probably would require an ambulance to get her somewhere to seek help and so many people having a go and telling her it wasn't an emergency - the lack of empathy was disgusting

notalwaysalondoner · 10/01/2021 20:06

It’s like the doctors and nurses who were on TV saying there are way more young people and children in hospital and dying now, and public health England had to come out and say there weren’t. Just because one hospital had unusually high numbers of young people doesn’t make that statistically representative. Massive scaremongering.

Emeeno1 · 10/01/2021 20:10

Throughout history there have always been those portents of doom predicting the end is nigh! They were all wrong. Take heart.

DianaT1969 · 10/01/2021 20:14

I haven't seen speculation like that. Even on MN Covid board.

It was quoting an actual doctor who’d been interviewed on Radio 4. If it had been random speculation I would have ignored it, but when actual experts are saying we’ll be living like this forever it’s hard to dismiss it. I need to try, though, for my own sanity.

Carysmatthews · 10/01/2021 20:22

You’re perpetuating the rumours by giving them fuel and reposting them.

Haffiana · 10/01/2021 20:28

The only posts I have seen have been factual. There have been plenty of posts from people then calling those factual posts scaremongering.

I think people cannot differentiate between 'I am scared by that post' and 'that post should be banned because it is scaring me'.

PPs need to step away from social media if they are anxious or cannot keep themselves calm.

gingganggooleywotsit · 10/01/2021 20:29

Couldn't agree more op. I honestly don't know what's wrong with some people
