I read threads on here about food all the time & even people who claim 'to 'cook', as in 'make stuff hot and eat it', have no idea about food. How to make delicious things, how to treat ingredients, what goes together.

It honestly makes me a bit sad.

The majority of people probably eat really rubbish food.

I really want people to understand food and eat better, not because I'm a dick, but because it would make their lives more pleasurable.

@ShrikeAttack

And I honestly don't care what people eat, or how much they spend. My point is, and has always been, cook it properly! I have no concerns if someone chooses to eat sandwiches for every single meal forbthe rest of their life, but why not eat the best bloody sandwich you can?
But it's not your point. Nothing in your posts is about how well something is cooked.

People might cook porridge, scrambled eggs and home made fishcakes.

Nothing fancy but it's HOW they are cooked. Most people (IMO!) can't cook scrambled eggs properly.

You seem to be thinking one thing, but posting something else.

Maybe it's all the wine? Wine

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 10/01/2021 11:20

Heineken?

EuroTrashed · 10/01/2021 11:21

Oh I’m so sorry - someone posted an Ocado order they said was yours. It’s riddled with ready meals and pre crumbed fish and premade tiramisu. The kind of things that you are railing against.
Sorry - assumed it was yours, as the poster said. Isn’t it?

giantangryrooster · 10/01/2021 11:21

Ha, I think you've all been had. Op probably did a night shift and needed entertainment 🤣.

OP, no amount of meal plans can show how well you prepare and put together a meal or how well you treat the ingredients. Eg. your pheasant could be dry to the bone and your 'legumes' soggy as a wet diaper.

I cook from the bottom of scratch, make my own broth cooking large cow bones, I make my own spice blends and mustard and so on. Sometimes it's a success sometimes not. But a lot of the time I can't be arsed and put together a quick meal or a pizza.

So you are probably right and goady as f... (and i bet i can out-cook you Grin).

Each to their own.

yellowmaoampinball · 10/01/2021 11:21

Well this thread took a turn - the op is even more of a massive twat than I thought. So actually it's ok not to cook and to eat pre-prepared meals as long as they are from Waitrose.

alliejay81 · 10/01/2021 11:21

In my view, there are at least three dimensions to being a good cook.

  1. knowing what flavours and textures work well together
  2. knowing various techniques and methods
  3. knowing what you like

As a home cook I've got 1) and 3) covered and stick within my limited knowledge of techniques and methods. I'm happy with this and this approach does bring me joy, same as it does for lots of people.

As long as you can do the basics well, you're a decent home cook in my view!

ineedaholidaynow · 10/01/2021 11:21

@Imissmoominmama if you could afford it would you then criticise the rest of us plebs for not being able to cook with the finest ingredients (and also buy ready made meals!)

JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat · 10/01/2021 11:22

"I do consider reading as essential, I read every day. I'm not going to die if I stop though."

You won't die if you stop cooking to the best of your ability either...you'll only die if you stop eating. Microwave rice and supermarket trifle could easily nourish you into old age. Wouldn't kill you anyway.

You're sounding a bit of a plonker now

wowfudge · 10/01/2021 11:22

The poster who said she can't cook but can grill chicken and boil rice - that's cooking. It needs be no more complicated than that.

ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 11:22

They do know how to cook rice properly, but, being teens, they're probably not going to cook it the day before, just in case they have an attack of the munchies the following day.

Anyway, I'm off for my BRUNCH. It's been fun.

JinglingHellsBells · 10/01/2021 11:23

You still aren't explaining why almost all your food shopping on that receipt is for a liquid lunch Grin

Maybe take your patronising attitude and pomposity elsewhere.

Comtesse · 10/01/2021 11:23

A lot of people eat a lot of crappy food, and that is a shame. Most of the cooking / recipes / meals I read on MN sound mediocre. I also think most restaurants aren’t very special and I can do better at home. Yanb entirely U from my perspective.

midnightstar66 · 10/01/2021 11:23

Eh? I've never bought a premade tiramisu in my life!

Yes you have, you ordered 1. It's was 300g and cost you £1.50

Don't forget your bottle of Chardonnay with it OP.

Hic!

EuroTrashed · 10/01/2021 11:24

@JerichosPenisInADeadChickHat’s post at 11.01 - the tiramisu you’ve never bought in your life is sighted between the chipolatas and the facon- use by date of more than a week as chock full of lovely home made, skilled preparation preservatives. Yum!

LaMarschallin · 10/01/2021 11:24

Regularsizedrudy

you wouldn’t feel the need to start a thread at 1am with faux concern about what peasants eat

I was really surprised to find that the OP isn't in a different time zone from the UK.

Just my opinion, but while I love duck eggs in various things, I think they're too rich to have with a cooked breakfast.
Scrambled duck eggs on toast are lovely.

ShrikeAttack · 10/01/2021 11:26

I will say, before I go, I do think I'm being wilfully misinterpreted. I'm not advocating complicated recipes using niche ingredients. I do that because I enjoy it. I just think, whatever you like to eat, and whatever you can afford to eat, you may as well eat the best version possible. Because you're worth it!

@EuroTrashed it is indeed her receipt.

Send us a photo of your brunch OP

"They do know how to cook rice properly, but, being teens, they're probably not going to cook it the day before"

WHY are you cooking rice the day before? 🤮 that is not recommended at all. In fact it's basic cookery, one of the first things you learn....

Walkaround · 10/01/2021 11:26

Following on from heinous earlier comments about roast potatoes, can I just say that not everyone wants their roast potatoes to be crispy? I like crispy roast potatoes, but when having them with chicken, I prefer them to be roasted around the chicken, soaking in the juices that come out of said chicken, and not actually particularly crispy as a result. The only ways of not cooking food “properly” are ways that: give you food poisoning; don’t go as planned; or remove all nutritional value from the meal.

Off to the Maccies Drive-thru no doubt 😅😅
giantangryrooster · 10/01/2021 11:27

Erh, I'm not uk, here we can't get duck eggs. Can anyone tell me what they taste like, please?

EuroTrashed · 10/01/2021 11:27

@ShrikeAttack can’t stand the heat so she’s keeping out of the kitchen with her microwave BRUNCH 😂

TarnishedSilver · 10/01/2021 11:27

@ShrikeAttack I think your menu is well put together. It wouldn't be my choice but as you say that's not the point - I could post my menu for the week and I know that it wouldn't appeal to the masses either.
What you posted initially was fairly controversial - but given the feedback you have received, you have touched a real raw nerve and so I think you are probably right.

It's not about fancy ingredients and if you think it's just about reading a recipe, you're either already a good cook or you really don't have a clue - even if you have all the right ingredients and you have managed to prepare them properly, cooking times are variable - knowing when to stop cooking is a learned skill, as is the seasoning - which is so often forgotten about.

I am amazed by the love of McD's food, to me it is completely bland - it's like have nothing in your mouth, how do they achieve that? - give me a big greasy, juicy, 15 napkin bacon-cheese burger - but not McD's tasteless crap - I just don't get it - I wish I did though - it can be very handy.

Imissmoominmama · 10/01/2021 11:28

@ineedaholidaynow- probably not! Grin

The food there is really lovely though!
