DH boss wont let him self isolate. What would you do?

DH works in a retail shop that has stayed open to click and collect customers and phone orders. Worked with a female colleague all day on Monday both answering the same phone and working on the same computer. No hand sanitisers and no cleaner. Female colleague tested positive for COVID yesterday.

DH was told this morning then told he could "nip out" for a test then back to work. Boss says he doesn't need to isolate as he doesn't have symptoms. Boss says if he doesn't go to work he will get the sack.

What in the world of fuck can we do?

The female colleague will be contacted by test & trace she will then give DH name as a contact and by law he must isolate

YesMeLady · 06/01/2021 19:22

Contact head office and ACAS. Print off the UK guidelines. He should isolate.

MoiraNotRuby · 06/01/2021 19:23

Is there anyone else at the workplace? I guess your DH should act as though he has it, sanitize constantly, windows open, mask on, advise customers to quarantine/disinfectant whatever they collect from the shop. Hope he gets his results really fast.

Skatastic · 06/01/2021 19:23

Forgot to say its a small family business so no Head Office only a money grabbing boss who says he is behind a screen so will be fine.

Is it an independent shop or part of a larger chain? He needs to go above the head of his boss if possible and refuse to go in.
Can he lie and tell them he has now got symptoms so is isolating until his results come back?

MushMonster · 06/01/2021 19:23

As above.
Also, why don't they have hand sanitiser?
And are they SDing?
Are they using masks?

It could have spread to customers too.

I hope he does not get any symptomsFlowers

Newkitchen123 · 06/01/2021 19:24

He needs to isolate.
It may be too soon for test. May get false negative

LawnFever · 06/01/2021 19:25

@fuckrightoff

The female colleague will be contacted by test & trace she will then give DH name as a contact and by law he must isolate
This and he’ll get a text telling him by law he has to isolate

Or could he tell the manager he has symptoms?

Gncq · 06/01/2021 19:25
Shock Sorry no advice but jeezus.

I'm sure it'd be illegal or something to prevent your DH from isolating, or basically forcing him to work in an unsafe environment in the first place.

I'm sure the manager is breaking the law all over the place. Get professional advice!

Skatastic · 06/01/2021 19:25

They don't have sanitiser for the same reason they don't provide face masks.... because they don't. God isnt it awful I wonder how many people are in this situation.

itsgettingweird · 06/01/2021 19:25

If he's had a test he must isolate whilst waiting for the results.

He should send that guidance to his boss who may have short himself in the foot by doing this!

YesMeLady · 06/01/2021 19:26

Wont the manager need to isolate too if he has contact with the staff.

InkieNecro · 06/01/2021 19:26

I would say he has symptoms, better safe than sorry.

Skatastic · 06/01/2021 19:26

DH is using a mask by the way. And washing his hands in the cold water as much as he can. But it is really, really busy and they share the phones and the computer.

OP posts:
NoGoodPunsLeft · 06/01/2021 19:27

That's shocking Shock

There must be someone your DH can report the company to!

NoGoodPunsLeft · 06/01/2021 19:28

And there's no point your DH getting tested unless/until he gets symptoms but he definitely shouldn't be at work and neither should anyone else who was working with the positive colleague

CrocodilesCry · 06/01/2021 19:29

Look online for your local council's public health team - there should be an email address for them.
Contact them to say his employer is breaking the rules and ask for some support and advice.
They're incredibly busy obviously but should be helpful - this is exactly the sort of thing they need to know about.

PurpleMustang · 06/01/2021 19:30

I keep wondering when we are going to hear of someone suing their employee for catching covid and the financial repercussions of having it due to neglect. I would say the only option is to say he has one of the symptoms, take your pick

PurpleMustang · 06/01/2021 19:31

Sorry employer not employee

thenightsky · 06/01/2021 19:31

I bet there are loads of bosses like this. Your poor DH is damned whatever he does really. If he isolates, nasty boss will sack him. If he reports nasty boss, nasty boss will sack him. Lets hope he tests negative.

17bluebirds · 06/01/2021 19:31

Why doesn't he take his own hand sanitizer?
What the boss is doing is very wrong, but your DH needs to take some responsibility for his own health. A simple step would be taking sanitizer with him.

Does he have the app? Has it told him to self isolate? If not, and he hasnt been called by track and trace, I can see how his boss thinks he can force him in.
But it is a terrible choice for public health, and I think he should just call in and say he has been a close contact and needs to self isolate.

Secretsout · 06/01/2021 19:32

Your DH needs to self isolate until the colleagues result is back.

Report the employer to public health, they are breaking the law.

Advising him to get a test is incorrect. At this stage it's almost certainly negative as he could still be in the incubation stage but infectious to others.

He will only be contacted by T&T is his colleague gives them his details, so he needs to make sure she has his phone number to add him as a contact.

notanothertakeaway · 06/01/2021 19:33

DH should send a text message to his boss to say it's a legal requirement to self isolate so he won't be able to work. If boss replies to persuade him otherwise, then he has evidence of boss' attitude. If DH has worked there for more than a year (Or two?), then he's in a stronger position

Skatastic · 06/01/2021 19:33

I'm worried that even if he does test negative today that its too early to tell.

Cunty boss says no symptoms then you are in work. Even when our son had symptoms he said DH had to be in or sacked.

Fucking hell I could scream.

Skatastic · 06/01/2021 19:34

@17bluebirds DH does take his own hand sanitiser i just added that bit to show how absolutely careless his boss is. He wont even get a cleaner he is that much of a twunt.
