DH boss wont let him self isolate. What would you do?

DH works in a retail shop that has stayed open to click and collect customers and phone orders. Worked with a female colleague all day on Monday both answering the same phone and working on the same computer. No hand sanitisers and no cleaner. Female colleague tested positive for COVID yesterday.

DH was told this morning then told he could "nip out" for a test then back to work. Boss says he doesn't need to isolate as he doesn't have symptoms. Boss says if he doesn't go to work he will get the sack.

What in the world of fuck can we do?

Just a thought ... Could your husband find excuses to borrow Twatboss's phone / pen / mug / whatever and then say 'Oops, better hope I haven't got it'. Wink

@AdobeWanKenobi dd was positive test results Tuesday & they contact her yesterday- but we have already contacted the people she has had any contact with, fortunately not many as not been far. I’ve also contacted people I’ve walked with to make them aware of situation. And obviously self isolating. Work told me to get test ASAP so I did but someone up thread said that was wrong advice? But I’ve done what work stipulated as it’s within law and they are paying me. Self isolating now and living separately etc

Please report to police, local council and acas! Whoever will listen really!

Is the boss going in to the same place? If he 'makes' your DH go in I'd tell him to stage cough and act as rough as he can, especially in front of customers/on top of the boss.

Despite the anger on here about the boss's co duct, I suspect this kind of situation is commonplace for people working for small employer's. The state is not really set up to consistently enforce good employment practice.

Realistically, you could report the employer but how common is actual enforcement of h and s rules anymore? Can you afford to lose your job while you try and sue for unfair dismissal or afford to lose pay if you take time off and boss says it is unauthorised.

Like a lot of people, you might have to just go along with it and hope for the best. Ultimately, a lot of workers just have to resign themselves that it is only a matter of time before they catch covid.

Now is not the best time to get on your employer's shit list and have to look for another job.

He needs to isolate. They also need to provide cleaning equipment to clean between uses and hand sanitizer

squeezeapplesmakejuice · 07/01/2021 07:33

Boss sounds like an absolute dickhead.

Brefugee · 07/01/2021 08:55

They don't have sanitiser for the same reason they don't provide face masks.... because they don't. God isnt it awful I wonder how many people are in this situation.

i see he does wear a mask from one of your updates - what's to stop him taking a good quality hand cleanser if there is only cold water to wash?

Skatastic · 07/01/2021 08:57

Well DH test from yesterday came back negative this morning but like lots of you have said it might just be too early. So he isnt going in today and he is going to contact test and trace to see what they say.

Other colleague who also worked with female colleague the whole of the weekend and Monday has had a test and it's negative so he is back in today. It beggars belief. @walksen we really can't afford to not have his wage while we went to court or whatever, we barely make ends meet as it is.

If you've read OP's updates properly you would know that he does.

@Skatastic

Sorry to hear that. Like I said, sometimes you can really disagree or even be disgusted by the actions of your employer but have to prioritise the roof over your head and the food on the table.
