Washing fitted sheets at 60

Fitted sheets I know, not as nice somehow, but they are convenient.
Has anyone had any problems with the elastic being damaged if you wash them at 60°?

I put a scoop of bicarbonate of soda in the wash in with anything whiffy, natures deoderiser. It neutralises rather than masks smells. Buy it in massive tubs from amazon.

@CounsellorTroi

I thought this thread was going to be about whether 60 is too old to wash fitted sheets.
So did I. I've been misunderstanding thread titles today. There was one asking if you've gone to the dogs since lockdown. I almost said, no the stadium nearest to where I live hasn't reopened yet, but they were talking about letting yourself go.

Flat sheets are difficult to get hold of these days. I usually use a fitted bottom sheet and quilt cover, but was looking for a flat sheet last summer during the heatwave cos I like something on top but not a quilt. I had to go into a few shops (got it in Wilkos in the end).

I wash everything at 30-40c Shock

PattyPan · 06/01/2021 20:17

Why on earth would you? I wash everything at 30 and nothing smells and we haven't died from germs

recycledtoiletroll · 06/01/2021 20:29

The only time I've done a 90c was to clean the machine out, but even then I chucked my white towels in as it felt like a waste of water/electric. They didn't look any different compared to a normal 30/40 wash tbh. Other than that everything is cold/30 or 40 max and comes out perfectly fine, never any stains or fusty smells either.

Nsky · 06/01/2021 20:42

Never wash fitted sheets at 60, if they can cope I will do.
Washing at 60 kills bacteria, or 40 with bleach ( most powders do), I add an eco bleach to my liquid.
As someone who worked in care, think infection control, cotton knickers, teatowels , dishcloths ( unless going in dishwasher), and towels.
Eco 20/30 for lightly stained outer clothing.

Glad I'm not the only filthy one washing my bedding at 40 degrees.

My washing machine is relatively new and has a separate setting for bedding. The bedding cycle includes an extra rinse but washes no higher than 40 degrees Wink

Sparklingbrook · 07/01/2021 07:05

I don't care what temperature others wash their bedding at-at least they are washing it. Grin I also don't care what others think of the temperatures I was my towels/sheets at. Although TBF it's a conversation that comes up every other hour on MN and never, ever in RL.

@Wearywithteens

Yes I always wash at 60 it’s the tumble dryer that shrinks them. I always buy the extra deep ones for that reason.

People who say they wash at low temperatures and don’t know what the fuss is about are often the same ones whose clothes have that funky stink and they are oblivious to it.

All my sheets’ care labels say wash at 40, but no, that’s fine, I’ll listen to you, a random on the internet, and wash them at 60/90 Hmm
sophiasnail · 07/01/2021 10:25

I wash everything at 60, on a one hour cycle and never have any problems.

TigerDrawers · 07/01/2021 13:40

I think my DF is the only person I've ever come across that can't sleep with a fitted sheet. I don't know what he does in the night but every time he sleeps with a fitted sheet it's unhooked by morning.

They have to have a flat fitted sheet with hospital corners as somehow he can't undo those in his sleep!

Vermeil · 07/01/2021 13:47

I wash bedding and towels at 60, but I add a scoop of washing soda as well as the usual laundry liquid. The soda is a powerful de-greaser, so with the anti-surfactant detergent it gets rid of anything a 95 wash with just laundry detergent would.
I’ve never had any issue with the elastic on fitted sheets unless the sheets were really getting on a bit and pretty much fit for the rag bin anyway.
