Washing fitted sheets at 60

ParlezVousWronglais · 06/01/2021 16:29

Fitted sheets I know, not as nice somehow, but they are convenient.
Has anyone had any problems with the elastic being damaged if you wash them at 60°?

Fab thanks everyone.

Not the point of the thread but I think they’re much nicer than a flat sheet because the elastic stops them moving about.

I know they just remind me a bit of old people’s beds! They are more convenient and quicker to put on.

A 60 degree wash with detergent will kill bacteria. 90 is unnecessary for routine washing.

I wash my sheets at 60 and the elastic is fine, meant to say also! Smile

@Wearywithteens

Yes I always wash at 60 it’s the tumble dryer that shrinks them. I always buy the extra deep ones for that reason.

People who say they wash at low temperatures and don’t know what the fuss is about are often the same ones whose clothes have that funky stink and they are oblivious to it.

Yes I’ve just got an extra deep one, expensive so didn’t want to destroy the elastic.

The experts do say you get bacteria build up if you wash on too low a temp. Below 40° is useless.

I've never washed anything above 40°C, so I don't know the answer to your question 😅

SlopesOff · 06/01/2021 17:39

If 60 is too old to wash them, what state would they be in at 95?

yankeedoodledandee · 06/01/2021 17:39

@Confusedcabbage

Why on earth would anyone wash at 95?! Is your washing machine from the 80s?

Mine is from December and it has a 90° wash

dementedpixie · 06/01/2021 17:44

Detergent also kills bacteria plus the water washes it away. I wash at 40⁰C normally with the odd wash at 60⁰C for bedding and towels. I would only use 90⁰C for a drum clean wash

Oblomov20 · 06/01/2021 17:44

Confused by this thread.
What's wrong with fitted sheets? Are they the poor relation? I love fitted sheets. Never used anything else. Washing at 60 is perfectly normal surely?

ParlezVousWronglais · 06/01/2021 17:45

I’ve got a Miele (stealth boast) and it has a 90° wash which it recommends you use to self clean the machine every so often.

Nobody said anything was wrong with them and the people answering the question all use them. OP wants to know of a hot wash destroys the elastic in them
lidoshuffle · 06/01/2021 17:47

Elastic nowadays isn't the old rubber stuff and is much tougher and heat resistant.

Sparklingbrook · 06/01/2021 17:48

I am not going to defend the temperature I wash my bed linen at. Grin Sheets go in with towels on the hottest wash.

SusieBugandMe · 06/01/2021 17:49

Wash all mine at 90. I'm a slattern in a lot of ways but bedding is washed once a week on a Sunday at 90 degrees and dried outside as much as possible.

Manky bedding freaks me out

TheDoctorDances · 06/01/2021 17:51

If you wash them at a lower temperature, they smell when they’ve been in storage for a few months. 60c or higher is best.

Snackz · 06/01/2021 17:52

40 degrees here for pretty much everything! Still breathing, still well, still absolutely fine Grin

Clymene · 06/01/2021 17:54

60 degrees kills everything. Any higher is just wasting electricity

Mabelface · 06/01/2021 17:54

My white cotton bedding goes on 90 degrees, the rest 60. Clothes done at 30. A very hot wash now and again is good to clear any gunk out of your machine.

Ok. I like the idea of flat sheets. They seem ‘proper’. But I end up using fitted ones lately because they’re easier to put and keep on.

But that just makes me feel lazy and like an old person. I’m not, but it just makes me think... have I got to the stage of life where making up a bed with flat sheets is too much effort???

Yes washing at 60° for cotton is normal. But if you notice most fitted sheets say 40 - which I assumed was to protect the elastic from hot water. I wondered if hot water would make the elastic too loose. But it would seem the general consensus here is it’s ok.

So that’s that. (Lockdown topics).

parlezvouswronglais use the same 'maintenance wash' on my miele once each month to stop getting bacteria build up machine

No funky smell here, thanks for that 😂

All entitled to an opinion 😊

emmathedilemma · 06/01/2021 17:56

Mine are ancient Ikea ones (I'm talking probably 15yrs old) and I mostly wash them on 60 and they're still fine.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 06/01/2021 17:57

Wash them at 60 or 90. Tumble dry them too. Even brushed cotton. Haven’t killed any yet.

diamondsr4u · 06/01/2021 18:03

What do people use other than fitted sheets?? I find mine shrink after washing slightly, and have to wrestle to put the damn thing on. I wash at 60. I have washed at 90 a few times, it doesn't ruin it.

butterpuffed · 06/01/2021 18:03

I wash mine at 40 deg, don't think I have that funky stink that a pp said us 40 deg washers must all have.

But hey, people seem to find it easy to socially distance from me, no idea why Grin

Josette77 · 06/01/2021 18:05

I'm confused. Flat sheets go on top of the fitted sheet. Why would anyone sleep on the flat sheet?
