Washing fitted sheets at 60

ParlezVousWronglais · 06/01/2021 16:29

Fitted sheets I know, not as nice somehow, but they are convenient.
Has anyone had any problems with the elastic being damaged if you wash them at 60°?

I mostly wash bedlinen on 60 - occasionally put it in with a small load of clothes.
Some of my older sheets the elastic went a bit iffy, but not generally a problem,

@Josette77

I'm confused. Flat sheets go on top of the fitted sheet. Why would anyone sleep on the flat sheet?
I dont use flat sheets at all Fitted sheet to lie on and duvet cover over You get flat sheets that are used instead of fitted sheets

There was a time when fitted sheets didn't exist Hmm I think they became popular in the 70s maybe?
LST · 06/01/2021 18:14

@Josette77 nah you sleep on the fitted sheet.

I used to have a flat sheet on top of us, between us and the duvet, but dp used to get tangled in it so I sacked it off

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 06/01/2021 18:17

I love making a bed with fitted sheets but god I hate folding them. They never look tidy. But going by this thread I'm a musty smelling slattern because everything gets washed on cold here. I've never noticed anything smelling 'funky' unless I've had to dry it indoors and it's taken a bit too long.

EggysMom · 06/01/2021 18:19

have I got to the stage of life where making up a bed with flat sheets is too much effort???

I must have been always at that stage (and I'm not even 60). My sheets have always been fitted, from childhood onwards.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 06/01/2021 18:24

I remember as a young teenager (early 70's) having a purple bri-nylon sheet set, the bottom one fitted and the top one with corners at the bottom. It was in lieu of me wanting my bedroom painted purple.

Shortly before the arrival of a "continental quilt" (duvet) as I recall!

ParlezVousWronglais · 06/01/2021 18:31

Well that’s another whole topic lol, should you have a top sheet or sleep directly in contact with the duvet cover?

There was a time when fitted sheets didn't exist

That’s right. When they came in I think they were seen as a time saving blessing by some, and a lazy short cut to others.

DM didn’t like them when we were young but she uses them now. Probably why I associate them with getting older.

Sheets on 60, white knickers and white towels on 90. Everything else on either 60 or 40 depending on how I feel.

womaninatightspot · 06/01/2021 18:33

I wash at 60 and tumble dry sheets without issue.

RavingAnnie · 06/01/2021 18:41

I've always washed by fitted sheets at 60 and it's had no effect on the elastic.

RavingAnnie · 06/01/2021 18:42

I'm not sure why you think fitted sheets aren't as nice. They are better evacuate the stay in place and don't get all ruched up. What's not nice about them?

TigerDrawers · 06/01/2021 18:45

@CounsellorTroi

I thought this thread was going to be about whether 60 is too old to wash fitted sheets.
I thought it was going to be that there's some sort of magical gene that kicks in at 60 that teaches you to fold the bloody things once they come out of the machine! Grin
Oblomov20 · 06/01/2021 18:47

Demented, actually you are wrong. OP herself said:

Traditionally flat sheets went on the bottom too with 'hospital corners ' - honesty, were you dragged up?

🤣🤣 fitted sheets are a relatively modern thing

I still prefer to make up a bed with a flat bottom sheet- it feels 'properly' done, BUT I'm such a wriggler (& that's before any shenanigans!) that despite my perfect hospital corners, they get in a mess,so it's fitted all the way.

I wash everything on 40°

No 'funky/whiffy/musty smelling clothes or bedding here & I have a VERY sensitive nose.

IMO that comes from people leaving clothes wet after washing them. 🤮

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 06/01/2021 18:54

I also thought it was going to be about AGE 60

Well I managed to find the ° symbol in the end so all is good.

Seldom wah anything above 60. As 60 is enough.

user1471443411 · 06/01/2021 19:02

We've started washing bedding at 60 as have light coloured sheets and it gets stains out better. Don't have any problems with shrinking or elastic going funny so far.

I guess it’s that flat are more traditional. But I will work on freeing myself from my fitted sheet guilt.

definitely not 90c !
60c quite possibly. Do people really know what 60c feels like? if you have access to a thermometer, stick it under your hot tap to get a feel for comparative temperatures.

Washing liquids are biological and dont require scalding temps IMHO

Bluntness100 · 06/01/2021 19:16

Gosh, I didn’t know folks still did the old boil wash as standard,

I do mine predominately at forty, they are white, they are changed weekly, no funky smells because the machine is clean.

If your clothes have a funky smell it’s not generally because you need to boil wash stuff it’s because the machine is dirty. However on how dirty/smelly the sheets are they may need a higher temp.

Lovely1a2b3c · 06/01/2021 19:19

Yes they'll be fine. I wash mine once a week on 60 degrees with dettol laundry liquid. Sometimes extremely manky towels go in for a 90 degree wash.

eaglejulesk · 06/01/2021 19:20

People who say they wash at low temperatures and don’t know what the fuss is about are often the same ones whose clothes have that funky stink and they are oblivious to it.

Absolute rubbish! A lot of people here wash in cold water and I rarely meet anyone whose clothes have a funky stink. I wash my bedding in cool water, and have whiter than white sheets - which do not smell (and I have a sensitive nose).

StoneofDestiny · 06/01/2021 19:25

60c no problem.
Hell, what's going to be alive after a thrashing at 60c and a further thrashing in a tumble dryer!
