To think accountancy isn't a "keyworker" job?

One of the parents at school is a self employed accountant who works from home, but sending kids into school. The other parent works out of the home (not a key worker) how is this allowed? Claims to be an essential worker (doesn't work for the nhs or anything, just accounts for small businesses)

Companies should not be allowed to get away with that.

And who is going to do what to stop them?

There’s a lot of ‘shouldn’t be allowed’ being thrown around, but no workable suggestions of how it should be tackled.

bravoy · 08/01/2021 11:16

Yes not every child will have an engaged parent & I did say who wasn't working (few hrs).
Equally not every child who is in school will get a better provision.
Hence why I said it was nuanced. 🤷‍♀️

Likewise for the key workers who have a place at school.

With the numbers of kw children going to school, Covid cases will continue and, as in the case of one of our local schools, there are three Covid cases this week and everyone is back at home.
Sending your DC’s to school doesn’t mean that they will remain there and they will be on home schooling along with those not sending their DC’s to school.

bravoy · 08/01/2021 11:20

It would be great if school staff were given vaccination priority (I think they are looking at this) so all kids can get back in.

if taxes are delayed, or people paid a little late, its not the end of the world

But if a furlough claim isn't made within the very tight deadlines, then the employer doesn't get funded, so can't pay the furloughed worker at all, so that's not a matter of being paid "a little late".

Also, are all these workers who risk being paid "a little late" going to be happy when their standing orders/direct debits bounce and they get charged exorbitant bank charges for breaching their overdraft limit? Will they just roll over and accept that, or will they be spitting feathers and threatening to sue their employers???

Payroll can be done from home.
Our payroll team globally have been working from home since March. Everyone in different countries continues to get paid on time.

bravoy · 08/01/2021 11:33

@Parker231 I know some in the public sector who do payroll as part of their job & they can't do it from home. Far too paper based for a start.

PugInTheHouse · 08/01/2021 11:38

The trouble is parker123, you and many other people are showing a lack of understanding that this isn't the case for everyone.

Whatafustercluck · 08/01/2021 11:39

@bravoy I'm a kw whose child has a place (before anyone says anything i don't work Fridays and offered to keep ds home on Fridays but school has a policy of kids in ft).

I mentioned on another thread that a solution might be to deal with kw places as schools deal with admissions. Set a percentage at which effective teaching/ transmission control becomes untenable. Then have a pecking order for places:

  1. 2 kw parents woh or a single kw parent woh
  2. 2 kw wfh or 1 single kw wfh
  3. 1 kw woh, 1 parent woh

Or whatever. It seems the only fair way but suspect it would instead add considerable admin for schools as so many permutations. Unofficially this is what schools are starting to do anyone so it probably needs some central government guidance to support them. As it stands, listening to this ongoing debate is soul destroying. So many assumptions being made on both sides of the fence. It's really sad to see how divisive and accusatory it's become. Sad

Well I think the tide is turning that way. However, they shouldn’t be done before those over 65 and the CV, so is going to take time.

Parker231 · 08/01/2021 11:43

@Whatafustercluck - your listing of priority is the one used at the school I’m a governor of. Lots of unhappy parents but the school doesn’t have enough available staff to run a home schooling programme and manage significant numbers in school each day.

Parker231 · 08/01/2021 11:43

The school is only currently taking those in category one.

bravoy · 08/01/2021 11:44

you and many other people are showing a lack of understanding that this isn't the case for everyone.

I worked in a mix of private & public institutions & they are very different.

user1497207191 · 08/01/2021 11:45

Payroll can be done from home.

Some can, some can't. Depends on the software, depends on the paper trail, etc. Not everyone who does payroll uses the same software, nor will be working with the same systems.

Parker231 · 08/01/2021 11:45

@bravoy - I do understand. I have a team of 90 across three continents who have all been working from home since March. It’s a nightmare for the employees, the company and our clients.

user1497207191 · 08/01/2021 11:46

It would be great if school staff were given vaccination priority (I think they are looking at this) so all kids can get back in.

Absolutely, once the elderly and ECV have been vaccinated, school staff should be next on the list.

Whatafustercluck · 08/01/2021 11:49

@Parker231 which is why it needs to be supported by a universally agreed 'safe' percentage of pupils in. Hard to argue with a clear, published policy. More difficult to police potential abuse though.

bravoy · 08/01/2021 11:52

I'm a kw whose child has a place (before anyone says anything i don't work Fridays and offered to keep ds home on Fridays but school has a policy of kids in ft).

My dc's school are insisting on a f/t place too.

Set a percentage at which effective teaching/ transmission control becomes untenable.

I agree & tbh I'm surprised they haven't as the schools I know of are doing this as part of their Covid RA (DB is also a headteacher).

Our school graded the jobs if that makes sense as per the guidance so NHS would take priority over financial services. Maybe our school community is different most would prefer the dc at home or with family if they could manage.

As it stands, listening to this ongoing debate is soul destroying. So many assumptions being made on both sides of the fence. It's really sad to see how divisive and accusatory it's become.

I agree & so many assumptions. Just because a child doe have a SAHP & are in who knows if that's wrong or not. I don't really understand it all tbh. I couldn't access furlough but I wasn't angry about those that could & recognised it was designed to help. Likewise we decided not to go on holiday but if others want to I have no problem.

bravoy · 08/01/2021 11:53

I do understand

Explain because you posted this

Payroll can be done from home.

user1497207191 · 08/01/2021 11:58

Payroll can be done from home.

There are also doctors and nurses working at home. So presumably you wouldn't them sending their kids to school either???

Parker231 · 08/01/2021 11:58

bravoy - I understand that working from home is different and difficult. Involves changes in systems and processes but can be done for many roles although many don’t want to make the adjustments.
I would love to be doing my ‘normal’ job but that involves international travel to clients so I’m now doing many zoom calls from home in London at different hours of the day and night to ensure that clients receive as normal as service as possible.
No one is happy but there aren’t any alternatives at the moment

bravoy · 08/01/2021 12:01

- I understand that working from home is different and difficult.

So do I & have never said otherwise.

bravoy · 08/01/2021 12:01

You said all payroll can be done from home?

Parker231 · 08/01/2021 12:06

bravoy - I did not use the word - all.
