Tax on goods from EU surely not correct?

297 replies

floridapalmtree · 06/01/2021 12:02

Husband has just had messages from DHL saying they will not deliver goods until £67 tax and import duty is paid. This is on clothing of £240. So 20% added. The items were ordered on 29 December so before Brexit exit.

Sister in law also ordered some goods from same company, also on 29 December, which were delivered yesterday but didn't have any tax to pay, think she may have spent less though.

AIBU that this is too much money? or is this just the way things are going to be post Brexit?

Only remainers could possibly think that taxes previously going to other countries in the EU now getting paid to the UK was a negative thing.

Clavinova · 07/01/2021 16:42

I see that Norway introduced VAT changes last year;

Exporting goods to consumers in Norway – Important changes from 1 January 2020.
As a foreign supplier of goods directly to consumers (B2C) in Norway, you might be liable to collect, report and pay VAT to the Norwegian Tax Administration.

From 2020, Norway will abolish the exemption of VAT and other indirect taxes on low value goods sent from foreign sellers to consumers in Norway. The intent is to charge VAT for all goods, regardless of value.

Just checked side by side Amazon FR and Amazon UK, chose four products at random.
Amazon UK €5 cheaper with added VAT. 🤷‍♀️

There are still a lot of companies doing good stuff in the UK that are irreplaceable, there are two jewellery brands I love (RegalRose anyone?!), and added VAT wont stop me buying from them.

I guess where Brexit and VAT will hit will be

  1. British companies without a USP who relied on cheapness to sell abroad, and
  2. Low income Brits who cant afford to pay VAT (but then would they really be buying from the EU anyway?)
Peregrina · 07/01/2021 16:47

So what Clavinova - Norway is not in the EU, and not in the Customs Union. As you would know if you have ever crossed the border between Sweden and Norway.

UK businesses now have added paperwork and cost to carry on their trade.

EU companies now have extra paperwork and cost if they want to deal with the UK

UK consumers now have extra paperwork and cost on the 50% of trade that comes from the EU

UK residents now face customs charges on gifts from friends and family in the EU

all that shiny new red tape

"Bicycle part firm Dutch Bike Bits said from now on, it would ship to every country in the world except the UK."

Every country in the world apart from the UK?

Website for Dutch Bike Bits is here;

About us -
"Originally British, we were attracted to the Netherlands by the conditions for cycling."

So they are British and not keen on Brexit??

Sensible then Grin

MrsMiaWallis · 07/01/2021 17:38

Yes, I've seen that. I was asking for SPECIFIC examples from someone who claimed they are 'selling happily' to the EU, just what they had to do, and how long it took them.I didn't even ask if they had costed how much it is costing them, time being money for us ACTUAL real-life exporters...

We export to 43 different countries and have for over 50 years. I'm not going into details as outing. We are used to the paperwork and all staff trained how to do it, we have a lot of expertise, so yes, we are still trading happily with the EU.

Hollybutnoivy · 07/01/2021 17:40

@MrsMiaWallis Are your EU customers being hit with unexpected extra charges on their end though?

ListeningQuietly · 07/01/2021 18:05

If MrsMia's customers are individuals who cannot tax deduct the clearance fees they will now be incurring on goods imported to the EU
they will be worse off

If her customers are businesses then their profit on the goods they purchase from her will have reduced

As she says he exports to outside the EU she presumably already had a tame freight agent which is better than most

but if she ships via the channel ports, once the traffic builds backup, so will her delays

but she voted for it
so I'm sure she is deligted

OchonAgusOchonO · 07/01/2021 18:20

@Clavinova

OchonAgusOchonO What's your point? I, and plenty of other Irish people, are aware of the current €22 limit. However, that doesn't really help for items about that limit. I ordered something today that cost €68. I went with the EU based supplier as it was cheaper.

Also from the links;

No Changes to VAT on Bigger Orders on Amazon.
For Items Sold by Amazon UK or “fulfilled by” Amazon UK.
Since Brexit, Amazon UK is continuing to charge Irish VAT on most items delivered to Ireland that are Sold by Amazon UK or “fulfilled by” Amazon UK.
At checkout–the basic price of the item should be reduced by the UK VAT amount.

Be aware that there may be customs duty on some items in orders over €150.

Import Duty on Irish Orders at Amazon UK
Even though there was a Brexit deal–it does not rule out customs duty on all items. If a product delivered to Ireland from the UK was not made in the UK–then it could be liable for duty. Any orders with an intrinsic value of €150 or less will NOT be considered for customs duty. Regardless of what is in the order.

I ordered something today that cost €68

How much were the delivery charges from amazon.de. ?

I didn't order from Amazon.

I ordered something from amazon in november. Checked the price on it today and it's dearer by €6.23.

Justa47 · 07/01/2021 18:20

Shame they are not shipping DDP

.de is cheaper than .fr.
SusannaSpider · 07/01/2021 18:36

@Emilyontmoor
That was the reason that Royal Mail had to slap on a tracked label to make sure your package did not languish further in an ordinary bag and incurred fines on them for failing to meet delivery targets

Thanks I was puzzling over that. But DD has just got home (it's her parcel) and says it has also definitely been opened and resealed too.

Coffeeisnecessary · 07/01/2021 18:37

Yes and works other way too. Out business has lost European customers as now they have to pay the import tax before they receive their goods, it's what people wanted though apparently!!

GoldfishParade · 07/01/2021 18:40

Slightly off topic but.... Why is there no Amazon.ie?!

GoldfishParade · 07/01/2021 18:41

That was to @OchonAgusOchonO :)

Small market and it was simpler for them to supply from the UK. They do have warehouse space in Ireland so some of the stuff is shipped from here.

I didn't - you've literally just made that up Grin

Clavinova · 07/01/2021 18:58

OchonAgusOchonO
I didn't order from Amazon

Oh, ok - I assumed you had because of your previous post;

The increased cost that I have seen on the likes of Amazon.co.uk means it's not an economical option for me anymore (I'm in the EU). I have moved to amazon.de.

I ordered something from amazon in november. Checked the price on it today and it's dearer by €6.23.

I wouldn't necessarily expect a price listed on Amazon in November to be the same in January in any case - Amazon had Black Friday deals in November. Is the same item listed on amazon.de? What are the delivery costs from Germany to Ireland?

Lincslady53 · 07/01/2021 19:11

We used to sell the odd item to customers in the uk and Europe, although most of our business was uk. If we sent to the EU we charged the UK vat rate, 20%. If we sold to someone outside the eu, we would sell the goods ex vat, and the customer would pay tax at the receiving end. So, I would expect that if you had to pay VAT to the UK, you should have been charged the ex VAT price from the seller. Because you ordered the item and it was sent before the end of Dec. It looks like you have been caught twice. I will stress it is 3 years since we were in business, so it may have changed.

It was not reduced in the black friday sales and no, the exact same item isn't available on .de.

The last item I ordered from .de was €7.71 delivery. I just checked both .de and .co.uk for to compare costs.

It is €26.95 plus €7.71 delivery from .de, so €34.66. It is €38.83 with free delivery on .co.uk.

GoldfishParade · 07/01/2021 19:25

@OchonAgusOchonO
So its €5 cheaper from Germany, €5 more expensive from France, both compared to UK (by the way, the four random items I used to compare came to €103 and some from France, €98 and some from UK, delivery and VAT included for both prices). I dont think those figures are enough to truly dissuade anyone.

Maybe not €5 on a €100 purchase as a once off but if you buy a fair bit online, it adds up.

The example I gave above was €34.66 vs €38.83. That's 12% dearer in the UK and estimated delivery was actually quicker from germany than from the UK, January 18th from Germany, January 22nd from UK.

ListeningQuietly · 07/01/2021 20:38

@Justa47

Shame they are not shipping DDP Delivery duty paid
DPD delivery is only applicable to B2B trades and where the goods in question were always subject to differing restrictions within the EU at point of retail sale eg alcohol

so not really relevant to what most end consumers are suddenly facing
