AIBU to think they should vaccinate teachers asap?

If they want schools to reopen as soon as possible, and childcare provided so people can work, wouldn’t it make sense to vaccinate teachers as a matter of priority?

I noticed they weren't on Boris's list in his speech. But then he was still insisting that schools are safe, just vectors for Covid. Hmm

snackarella · 04/01/2021 20:49

I thought that too!

Letseatgrandma · 04/01/2021 20:50

You’d think this would be obvious, wouldn’t you?!

Schools are vital...but clearly not THAT vital.

Lollyneenah · 04/01/2021 20:50

Totally agree

Squigglypig2 · 04/01/2021 20:51

It would make complete sense so it won't happen.

flumposie · 04/01/2021 20:51

Yep.

Xmasgrump · 04/01/2021 20:53

It won’t stop transmission between kids, and then taken home to parents though.

Didyousaynutella · 04/01/2021 20:53

They haven’t even managed health care professionals yet, but I agree they should be next on the list.

HaudYerWheeshtBawbag · 04/01/2021 20:53

Of course it should be a priority but not over front line workers or the elderly/vulnerable etc...

There have to prioritise the jags due to supply and resources.

Creatingausername · 04/01/2021 20:53

Thousands of people visit the supermarket in a day, why are those workers not higher up the list? The fact is just that they aren't more vulnerable than anyone else unless they are actually clinically vulnerable in which case they will be higher up the list.

Biscusting · 04/01/2021 20:54

How many teachers have died or been hospitalised compared with NHS frontline, care home staff and residents?

Not being a dick, but I think they’re vaccinating in the right order.

kurtrussellsbeard · 04/01/2021 20:54

As previous poster said it won't stop transmission between kids and sadly it won't stop teachers having to isolate if they come into contact with positive cases as we don't know if the vaccine stops transmission yet (I think).

You need to ask Boris.

Something I don't know about the UK, are shoppers limited by number in a shop?

FiveFootTwoEyesOfBlue · 04/01/2021 20:55

Why do you not understand what 'vulnerable' means? They are vaccinating to bring down DEATHS in vulnerable people. If a teacher is under 50 and not classed as clinically extremely vulnerable then no, they are not some kind of extra-special person that needs protecting more than a bus driver or supermarket worker. People who work in health care are obviously far far more likely to be exposed to Covid than teachers.

Lalliella · 04/01/2021 20:56

Actually I think I’ll amend that to maybe school kids should be vaccinated too. After all, they seem to be the ones spreading it the most.

It’s nice that my 85 year old mum will get hers very soon, but she’s tier 4 and hardly sees anyone so she’s at very little risk.

And the reason they're vaccinating care home staff is to protect the VULNERABLE elderly residents.

poshme · 04/01/2021 20:57

So should teachers get priority (they are in classrooms with kids who may or may not have CV)
Or healthcare workers - who are in hospital wards with people who DEFINITELY have CV?

corlan · 04/01/2021 20:57

Seems obvious. If school staff keep going off sick with covid, you can't keep the schools open.
Cannot understand the logic of not vaccinating school staff, if keeping schools open is that important.

I don’t think teachers should be vaccinated before health care workers, they should be first on the list.

I also think other key workers should be high up too.

I’m not a teacher by the way!

Not possible because the vaccine hasn't been tested in under 16s. And also, because children are not VULNERABLE to it. They're spreading it more than other ages now because most adults are working from home.

catatecheese · 04/01/2021 20:59

100% put them at the top of the list. Get children back into school.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 04/01/2021 20:59

I agree teachers need to be vaccinated now.

It is a real problem for government though because then other sectors of work force might demand it.

Then there is the fact that it probably won't help slow hospital admissions. Not whilst schools are shut when schools open.

They can't hardly say the priority list is about saving the NHS and lifes if they move away from their current priority order.

Sure their is a way of swinging it but doubt this lot will do that successfully. They might end up saying oh bugger it and vaccinate school staff. Then deal with the consequences later. Who knows.

catatecheese · 04/01/2021 21:01

As a nurse I would be happy to work for free this weekend in a school hall and do all local teachers . The rest of my team would happily all do this. But apparently we can't .

mrsm43s · 04/01/2021 21:02

No! Vaccination doesn't prevent transmission.

If schools were open, there may be a case to expedite the vaccination of teachers in the priority groups (over 50 and vulnerable). But since that will already happen before schools reopen following the existing schedule, it's a moot point.

At no point should a healthy, young teacher who is likely to be asymptomatic or have an extremely mild illness be protected at the expense of the elderly or vulnerable for whom Covid has a real possibility of causing serious illness or even death. I can't believe anyone would suggest it!

PheasantPlucker1 · 04/01/2021 21:02

Im not bothered about catching the virus while teaching.

Im bothered about passing it on to kids who go home to vulnerable parents or carers.

As a teacher Id rather those who are at risk get it first.
