Schools should shut for 2 weeks ONLY !

I work in a school so this is not a teacher / school staff bashing thread at all

Some staff have been calling out for schools to shut just for 2 weeks so people can isolate etc

Now London where I am have that chance, personally think everywhere else should close just for 2 weeks but for people to say they should be closed until February or further are mad! That is simply not an option and unfair on the kids

If you use the 2 weeks you are getting properly you could really make a difference!

There are sadly so many factors to consider...
As a parent I have zero trust in other families at school acting sensibly, it's clear from the Christmas break they've no regard for their wider community.
Also how and why should school staff be reasonably expected to expose themselves to such risk? Tier4 here with very scary Andres slaying numbers. Of course it's not what anybody wants but this is vital...
Let's remember schools were not supposed to reopen at all unless they passed the"4 tests".... we fail on these currently, vaccine rollout is a holy mess and government incapable of logically supporting and communicating with schools.

I found the first time round hugely challenging but I'll happily do this again yes beyond February if necessary than force my family to fav the alternative

@Saylethewayles

My guess is after Feb half term at the earliest but after Easter is, I think, very possible.
Sayle do you have a kw place that you will use? (If you have primary age dc)
Saylethewayles · 03/01/2021 23:52

Sayledo you have a kw place that you will use?

I work in mental health so I could probably request one but as DH works from home too (not a KW) and I care for an ECV relative I wouldn't use one- would rather leave that for someone who needs it more.

Saylethewayles · 03/01/2021 23:53

I also don't think it is that helpful blaming Christmas mixing or getting narky about people going to the range. I don't think it would have made a blind bit of difference. With schools open and cases as high as they are it would have been impossible to curb the spread without closures.

Epic typos apologies

But really though??

That joke of a union GMB has said they are not able to advise support staff with not attending work only teachers

A lot of support staff pay GMB for protection and now they deserve to lose every member of their union for saying support staff don’t matter basically! What they said is completely untrue as other unions are supporting them!

I’m not saying I agree with the union as I think they’re being unfair on a lot of management in schools, but the way GMB are handling it is disgusting 🤮

Schools should shut until it is safe for them to open and the virus isn't running amok.

Chuckleknuckles · 04/01/2021 00:19

You’re quite mad if you think schools will open after 2 weeks. The tough part was closing them. Now that they’re closed we will be lucky to see them open before half term. And likely Easter.

LoveMyKidsAndCats · 04/01/2021 00:20

My family hasn't seen anyone over xmas. Didn't see any of our family or friends not even for walks. Been in and walks just us since school broke up. I'm back to work tomorrow dealing with the public so my family will be more of a risk of spreading it in 2 weeks time.

blue25 · 04/01/2021 00:25

Schools will stay closed until at least half term. This is going to get worse before it gets better.

BogRollBOGOF · 04/01/2021 00:28

What is safe? The unions weren't happy back last summer when the majority of local authorities had a handful of cases at a time. Are we going to write off another half year and screw over children's education and childhoods again?

School closures need to be on a localised need, not blanket across the whole country. Great swathes of the country have similar rates to October and are fairly steady.

I do not trust the unions to have children's needs as their priority and they are politicking around for their own agenda. The NUT (NEU) always were the most stike happy which was why I never put union subs in their direction. It's easy to bay for schools to shut, but I don't trust the political will to reopen them ago after last school year's write-off because too many seem to think that nothing short of immortality/ invulnerability is "safe" enough.

ItsIgginningtolookalotlikeXmas · 04/01/2021 11:59

Instead of immortality, maybe we could go for a low r and a vaccine for all education staff who want one?
