Schools should shut for 2 weeks ONLY !

139 replies

HeyBaby2020 · 03/01/2021 20:04

I work in a school so this is not a teacher / school staff bashing thread at all

Some staff have been calling out for schools to shut just for 2 weeks so people can isolate etc

Now London where I am have that chance, personally think everywhere else should close just for 2 weeks but for people to say they should be closed until February or further are mad! That is simply not an option and unfair on the kids

If you use the 2 weeks you are getting properly you could really make a difference!

Funny thing is I used to say what you said and was told no 2 weeks will do it! Sort of got used to the opinion 2 weeks will do

It might have done in conjunction with 2 week lockdown pre Christmas and no Christmas mixing.

Surely you understand that sometimes the advice changes based on the circumstances? The new variant is a major game changer. Cases have jumped 80% in a week.

HeyBaby2020 · 03/01/2021 20:56

@Saylethewayles

That’s what I said wasn’t it ?!?

You said teachers should get tested, not students.

I imagine many parents would not be happy about their reception aged children being subjected to regular invasive, uncomfortable tests.

It won't happen anyway: there aren't enough HCP to do it. The time when this thing could be controlled by testing is long gone now.

Sad that it won’t happen! Could save a lot of cases and school closures

What happens in 2 weeks time when the new strain is as prevalent outside the south east as it has been in Kent/Essex/London for the past 3-6 weeks.
If you look at the daily data - Swale, Basildon/Hastings etc and some London boroughs are falling again but rest of country rising again.
2 weeks will sort London - well should reduce r

I hope 2 weeks is enough. I don’t want my kids missing out on their education or their friends. I don’t want other kids missing out either. But we have to just wait and see. Let’s hope it’s 2 weeks, but prepare for it being longer. It’s depressing, I hate it for my kids and I hate the way it’s dividing people.

HeyBaby2020 · 03/01/2021 20:58

@EasterIssland

I’ve seen on mn threads that many parents won’t allow their kids to wear masks or getting them tested ... so not sure whether this would be helpful. Will they refuse those kids that don’t wear them or get tested ?
Yeah refuse them into school if they can’t comply! Do also think parents should have the choice if their kids go back or not

we've just been shut for 2 weeks haven't we??

Thewiseoneincognito · 03/01/2021 21:00

The problem with this unfortunately is how contagious the mutation has become. So in theory yes rates will lower in a 2 week closure but not anywhere near enough for it to be safe to reopen schools because within a very short space of time we will be back in the same situation. Whilst there’s just 1 person in the country with this we are screwed eventually.

Remote learning needs to be adopted indefinitely to make any difference at all. We are going to find this out in the coming week or two when the government have to admit our perilous situation.

I would be very surprised if schools are back before feb half term and think it’s entirely possible they won’t return until after Easter. If we don’t make these 2 weeks count by implementing stricter rules (no travel, no flights, sanctions for rule breakers), then I’m afraid this will go on and on. The government also needs to pull its finger out and vaccinate school staff as a priority.

It could be what we’re facing if the government doesn’t get its shit together.

2 weeks i could take and totally understand. I'm so worried once they are closed that's it for months, some people are suggesting they stay closed until Easter!!! By then my 4 year old would have lost everything she's learned if the last lockdown is anything to go by. She was miserable, listless, uninterested in everything. On line learning will not help reception years

HeyBaby2020 · 03/01/2021 21:05

If it is closed until Easter then unions, government and school staff (including myself) ought to be embarrassed

It’s very concerning

Remote learning isn’t good for younger years

Even I would agree with "fixed two weeks closure"... if we could rely on the government to keep it to two weeks. A fixed term would be easier for everyone to handle mentally.

But this government simply can't be trusted with ending restrictions when they say they will; in fact, whenever Saint Boris states a timescale, you can almost guarantee it won't happen. They u-turned on "it would be inhumane to cancel Christmas", and two weeks of school closures could easily become FIVE MONTHS, and exams cancelled again; if only because the unions won't give up the fight if the schools do close. Remember the original "We can turn this virus around in twelve weeks"? What is it now, more than forty weeks, and counting?

Does anyone really believe that a tory government, of all people, would trash the economy into the ground to protect the NHS and save the vulnerable, if there was a better alternative? Politicians, Tory or otherwise, simply don't live on the same planet as the rest of us, so I would believe anything of them. If it comes to light in a few years' time that some of their actions were for their own shits and giggles, because Matt Hancock is a secret Cromwell fetishist, I wouldn't be surprised at all.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 03/01/2021 21:15

@Ylvamoon

... we had the chance of 2 weeks "lockdown " it was called called Christmas break.

and before anyone says anything, we were isolating, no big christmas or new years do here, I want schools to be open, my DC need to be in school for their mental wellbeing

agreed, but everybody seemed to ignore that, even in Tier 4.

In theory you could have had a strict lockdown at Christmas with half a week on each side or something. Too many shouting about "their Christmas being cancelled" and ignoring all restrictions, and there we are.

BooksAreNotEssentialInWales · 03/01/2021 21:20

According to the unions schools weren’t safe at any point this year. They will never allow the children back if it’s up to them. They may be open to some but education cannot be based on parent’s occupation. They are happy for children to be collateral damage.

Why would unions or school staff be embarrassed? Unions are right to demand safer schools so they odds of schools shutting down and people getting sick decreases.
