to think that the Mail on Sunday is just trying to enflame the culture wars by writing about 'woke snowflakes wanting to ban Grease'

Grease was on. Again. And some people (as usual) discussed some of the issues in it.

This then leads to an article in the Mail on Sunday and cue outrage from people who are upset that some people have some issues with the film.

But it suits the narrative of the Daily Mail and Tory right wingers on their campaign on 'woke' and gets more articles in the DM thinking that culture is under attack, bloody feminists want it cancelled and that anyone who is 'woke' is the enemy.

It all adds fuel to the fire of the 'culture' war and 'war on woke' that is bubbling away at the moment.

Isn't that what you're doing on here by mentioning it? To stir up debate on MN?

It's the Katie Hopkins problem. Ignore it, hope it goes away but it doesn't.

Or talk about in the open to see what people think about the culture wars.

They are happening now.

Posts like this also add “ fuel to the fire of the culture war / war on woke”.

Can you not see that labelling people who don’t want certain things cancelled as “Daily Mail reading Tory right wingers” is just as bad as what they’re doing? It’s just extreme ends of a scale.

The point is that it's not going to be cancelled.
But the DM has picked up on a few tweets and signal boosted about it.

I’m no snowflake ❄️ But I thought grease does depict a more misogynistic world than we should accept today

sst1234 · 03/01/2021 17:09

So what’s your point? Do you want it banned?

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 17:10

Well you've just done enough for an article now...

I am surprised the DM hasn't picked up that thread about Men Behaving Badly and run an article saying that Snowflake Mumsnet users call for MBB to be banned.

No.

It's got some great songs in it.

OP posts:
sst1234 · 03/01/2021 17:13

So what is your point? That you don’t like the daily mail? Or people being called snowflakes?
If you can label people for their political beliefs, why can’t they do the same?

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 17:13

@sst1234

The point is that a few comments on Twitter from some people discussing some of the more outdated parts of it should not lead to a full article and lead website article about ' woke snowflakes'.

There is a culture war happening at the moment - and anyone who dares to bring up a certain view that something may be racist / sexist is called a 'woke snowflake'.

Schmoozer · 03/01/2021 17:14

No, I wouldn’t ban grease 😂
I took my teenage daughter to see the musical and we thoroughly enjoyed it, but it’s worth a
Discussion re the depiction of behaviour of men treating women as sexual and
Pointing out the problems with that

user1471565182 · 03/01/2021 17:14

Yep, and now any youtube clips will be full of comments about this crap. Its 50% of the Mail's content.

MellowBird85 · 03/01/2021 17:15

But the DM has picked up on a few tweets and signal boosted about it.

This is the whole DM business model though, everybody knows they capitalise on sensationalist headlines and most people with an ounce of common sense roll their eyes and take it with a pinch of salt.

user1471565182 · 03/01/2021 17:16

RIght wing victimhood sells.

Chimeraforce · 03/01/2021 17:16

Yes they're shit stirring that's what they do

user1471565182 · 03/01/2021 17:17

Id have once agreed with you about 'most people with an ounce of common sense' ignoring it, MellowBird, but you'l soon see from this thread that isnt true.

sst1234 · 03/01/2021 17:18

OP, when have we not had culture wars? It’s not a new phenomenon. People have had political disagreements since the dawn of time. Yes, so the daily mail picked up some comments from Twitter and made a story out of it. Who reads newspapers for an objective view. People read what they already identify with. You are doing exactly the thing that you seem to unhappy about.

chomalungma · 03/01/2021 17:30

It just seems to be getting worse.
Any discussion about something is exaggerated with headline articles about people's values being under attack.

We've seen what happens with exaggerated articles in the past and know where that leads.

And it seems to be getting worse.

I think conservatives want to think that we're always at culture war. They're endlessly annoyed its the one area that they cant buy their way into because culture requires intelligence and imagination.
