@JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows

People don't need to go to the doctors, or take their kids to the doctors, because they are having a little bit of a "down" week. It's not normal to always feel happy. And the mass medication of our society on anti-depressants is beyond alarming.
Can't agree more about this.Alot of peoples troubles are self inflicted.Sure we all have a bad day or period, but stop moaning and get up and do something about it .But in the Uk the easy way out is go to the doctors and he'll sign you off work and give you some pills. In no other country do they have so many people with depression taking medication. Here (doesn't matter actually where) you are advised to get outside.Fresh air abit of exercise. I am convinced our way is the right way. Do not intend to offend the small number of those who really have mental health issues.Just the Can't be arsed ones

Iceland.

Portugal.

Australia.

All have a larger anti-depressant consumption rate than the UK.

@RunningFromInsanity

Homeless people are homeless because of their own choices. If they really wanted to get off the streets there are places they can go.

Most of the people begging in my town have refused Council help and use their benefits/begged money for drink.

You can’t claim benefits if you’re homeless.
Orlania · 07/01/2021 22:52

I actually thought my earlier post admitting to liking Mrs Brown's Boys would have caught a lot more flack but that one sailed past without comment.

Well TBF I noticed that one and thought why? But I didn't comment 😂 Anyway Im just posting because I'm trying to break up an arduous day at work, and I was somewhat bored and looking for a distraction. With regards to high earners paying a higher tax, well if they're super high earners then yes I think they probably should. For people that are high earners but still not that that high, not so much. And obviously I don't want to see people on the street or with no money to support themselves. But I do think in some areas then benefits should be tightened up a bit. It's quite a big subject though, and not one that I have enough time to throw myself into really. Maybe I shouldn't have put it out there without more time to explore it. But then it is a thread for unpopular ideas, not necessarily a thread to justify why. Which is why I did.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 07/01/2021 23:25

It makes me sad that you genuinely think that . Do you really not Rio go that childhood abuse , abuse , health care, mental health and prison pays a role ? I guess not . And not trying to argue

Shetoshe · 07/01/2021 23:28

Being a SAHM is not the same as a FT job

See I just don't understand this. If you employed a nanny to do it - would she be allowed to say she had a full time job?? If a parent isn't doing it then they are PAYING another person to do it, so ergo it is exactly the same as a full time job effort-wise - no? Or does the child being biologically yours negate the work involved?

Either way I've done both, both had their challenges but for me working is mentally much easier and I have what most on here would consider a "high-pressure" job. However, I had two DC 15 months apart so that was possibly why I found being at home hard.

The only two people IRL who I ever received snide comments from about being a SAHM were the ones who actually wanted to be one but couldn't afford it/husbands wouldn't agree to it and were quite obviously projecting their bitterness/insecurity. Perhaps that's my unpopular opinion...

Miljea · 07/01/2021 23:50

Too many 18 year olds are going to university.

There. My unpopular opinion.

TomPinch · 08/01/2021 00:27

I don't mind a bit of BO on myself or anyone else. I think it's fine not to change clothes daily, and the world's not going to end if people don't wash daily either.

Marriage does not necessarily “protect” women from financial ruin or really anything else.

CayrolBaaaskin · 08/01/2021 06:05

@RunningFromInsanity I think you’re right - I have close family in homeless services and there is no need for anyone to be a rough sleeper. Often though it’s mental health or alcohol and drug issues which means they can’t access help effectively rather than an active choice.

FunkBus · 08/01/2021 06:19

I couldn't care less if someone wants money as a gift, in fact I find it cheekier to ask for actual things. But generally, they can have what they want.

Thank you cards, who cares? Seriously. Just give the present and stop expecting something back.

Moaning about your children constantly is shitty. Saying stuff like 'my baby was being a right little bastard today' isn't funny or edgy or cute, it just sounds horrible. Nothing wrong with getting frustrated but I can't imagine speaking about someone I love that way.

Not everyone is a narcissist or toxic just because you don't happen to like them.

Wine o'clock/pass the gin type shit is just boring.

If you dressed like the posters on Style and Beauty suggest, you would look like shit.

Everyone knows perfectly well what the word 'chav' means and suggesting it is somehow insulting to the working classes is, in itself, insulting to the working class. Not all working class people are chavs, chav culture is a totally different ball game.

24HoursInPoliceCustody · 08/01/2021 06:31

That teachers are not lazy

roseinthedark · 08/01/2021 07:23

If you want to lose weight it is not unreasonable for your partner to have noticed the difference in your confidence, happiness, and yes, attractiveness. And to want you to follow through with that

lovelemoncurd · 08/01/2021 07:29

Stay at home mums are basically bored and many then get transfixed by irrelevant gossip and health anxieties.

People who spend vast quantities of money and time on make up , hair , nails end up looking weird and not actually very attractive.

Parents who insist on continuous after school clubs and activities for their children are doing it to enhance their own status amongst peers and not for their children.

HappyNewYear2021 · 08/01/2021 07:44

That teachers can spread covid to students! It appears many think only the other way is possible Grin

FestiveFruitloop · 08/01/2021 08:06

@RunningFromInsanity

Most of the people begging in my town have refused Council help and use their benefits/begged money for drink.

This is an absolutely vile and untrue piece of right-wing claptrap.

There's no way you know 'most of the people begging in your town' well enough to substantiate this disgusting allegation, you're just recycling Daily Mail-style vitriol and you should be ashamed of yourself.

TomPinch · 08/01/2021 08:41

Minority groups do suffer from discrimination. However, their spokespeople are often a bunch of mewling slebs who aren't disadvantaged in any meaningful sense despite claiming so. These people discredit their own causes.

ChochoCrazyCat · 08/01/2021 10:18

@FestiveFruitloop Hmm, I don't think that poster is necessarily far off the mark tbh.
In my previous job I had some dealings with homeless charities. I live in a medium sized city. They told me that out of all the beggars in our city, only 2 are actually rough sleepers. They'd been offered help and accommodation multiple times but turned it down.
Also that many of the beggars in town do unfortunately spend the money on drink and drugs, and then go back to the shelter and start fights/smash things up.
It wasn't said in a nasty/Daily Mail-esque way, just matter of fact.
That's not to say they don't deserve sympathy...it's often the case that they have complex problems with MH/addiction/trauma that mean they can't manage life, money and a tenancy. It's a grim way to live and no one would willingly choose it but the alternative (accepting help and putting in the work to change) is often too hard and daunting, and many relapse or give up altogether.

RunningFromInsanity · 08/01/2021 11:53

Fancy my ‘unpopular’ opinion being unpopular... Hmm

But yes, basically what @ChochoCrazyCat said.

And don’t get me started on the selfish ones who force dogs to sleep outside with them, just to get more money from the public...

BarryWhiteIsMyBrother · 08/01/2021 12:00

The key is to give them food and drink (to both the person and the dog) rather than money that will very likely go towards drinks and drugs.

Blursula · 08/01/2021 12:02

That many women who don’t breastfeed (whether through choice or otherwise) appear to have a real issue with, and bad attitude towards, women that do. Whereas I think the majority of breastfeeding mums couldn’t give two hoots about the fact that many women use formula.

That you shouldn’t have to give your kid a ‘full name’ for the BC. You’re not going to miss out on being Prime Minister just because your name is Ben and not Benjamin.

That specifying whether you identify as trans (in the same section as your ethnicity) has no place in job applications. I’ve seen this twice recently.

Rocket is disgusting.

David Attenborough is overrated.

VinylDetective · 08/01/2021 12:14

@CayrolBaaaskin

Marriage does not necessarily “protect” women from financial ruin or really anything else.
Tell that to the woman who agrees with you and then finds herself and her kids homeless because she “didn’t need a piece of paper”.
CayrolBaaaskin · 08/01/2021 12:21

@VinylDetective - Iol - point perfectly illustrated. Not all women are poor dears who need a man to pay for their lives. Plenty women out earn men and/or have the most assets. Marriage may financially benefit some women, maybe even the majority but not all and doesn’t necessarily “protect” anyone as I said above.

BronwenFrideswide · 08/01/2021 12:21

If you dressed like the posters on Style and Beauty suggest, you would look like shit.

I agree. Even my 80+ year old MIL would consider most items suggested on there as frump central, especially the shoes.
