After Eights

Is it just me or do they taste like crap this year?
My favourite thing at Christmas and I'm likely to throw the box away 😔

I hope that this time next year we’re not saying the same about Bendicks Confused

I've always loved After Eights but the last few boxes I've had have been 'sludgy.'
You used to get that snap and crackle of the dark chocolate followed by the soft creamy mint filling.
They've definitely changed in recent years.

1Morewineplease · 03/01/2021 17:56

Oh... just remembered... Morrison's own brand of mint thins are so much nicer... almost like After Eights used to be.

moglovesmincepies · 03/01/2021 17:59

Oh I was so looking forward to the after eights we have after the disappointment of the mouthwash tasting mint matchmakers.
Really hope they taste good now 🤞

Cherrysherbet · 03/01/2021 18:02

Mine seemed just as good. Just finished off ours today 😋

Spanglybangles · 03/01/2021 18:03

Oh Christ, I’ve not opened mine yet and I bought a triple sized box from Costco. Hoping they taste ok as I LOVE after eights.

They're really fine. Taste exactly the same as ever. As does Cadbury's.

Received wisdom would suggest I have a less than discerning palate but I really can't tell the least bit difference.

Emmelina · 03/01/2021 18:14

I’m sure they’re sweeter this year, less minty and the chocolate has no snap. Maybe this is low-key a good thing as I could easily polish off a tray of them to myself of an evening before, but have had to stop after 3 or 4... Wink

Definitely. We've been buying Morrison's own during December, and they are lovely - proper 'snap' to the dark chocolate and a lovely mint flavour.

They were substituted with After Eights for our Christmas delivery, which were horrible. Weirdly chewy chocolate and the mint tasted "off".

We re-bought some Morrisons own once back in stock.

Marmite27 · 03/01/2021 18:15

@Lockheart

They seemed fine to me, I didn't notice anything different.
I was going to say the same, then I realised we’re eating last years box that got forgotten about Confused

Shock
Aworldofmyown · 03/01/2021 18:23

Yes. That's it. Weird waxy texture with less mint.

I'm off to retrieve them from the bin to give a good and proper shaming!!! 😆

Put them in the fridge

PrincessNutNuts · 03/01/2021 19:34

The gin and tonic ones made me hang my mouth wide open like the cat when he's smelled a bad smell.

Aworldofmyown · 03/01/2021 20:08

Don't even get me started on those. Vile.

I had to have a second one just to be sure Grin
@goose1964 also works putting the bottle (tightly sealed obviously) in the dishwasher. Other harder sweets like Turkish Pepper Liquorish are nice too. 🙂
Mmmmm Turkish pepper...

DappledThings · 03/01/2021 22:19

Just had three of them to check. Yep, taste fine to me!

AndcalloffChristmas · 03/01/2021 22:24

They are much too sweet for mint chocolates imo

I like Bendicks bittermints but a friend introduced me to Holdsworth mint fondants which are even better!

occa · 04/01/2021 01:14

Oh I thought it was just me! I hadn't bought After Eights in years and when I opened the box I'd bought just before Christmas I was SO disappointed!

Not minty enough and too thick I think, with too much chocolate. Not all lovely and properly thin like they used to be. I won't be buying them again.

Dryadia · 04/01/2021 02:03

I use to love After Eights but would too often eat a whole box in a single sitting.

I managed to get Montezuma's Last Round organic Peppermint Dark Chocolate at Tesco before Christmas. Reduced 50% to £2 a 200g box.

I am unashamed to say I bought 6 boxes, use by date August ( but so not going to last that long) I am only having 3 a day as they are really rich tasting but typically they have now disappeared off the Tesco completely, googled them and other than the sold out link to Tesco, nothing !!!!

Thought I'd found my chocolate craving solution.....

grassisjeweled · 04/01/2021 02:08

What?! Used to love these, we were given them in Indian restaurants

AtlasPine · 04/01/2021 02:28

They remind me of a reader’s top tip in Take a Break or some such magazine. She recommended freezing slices of toothpaste to offer guests after dinner if you had forgotten to get After Eights. I’m not sure I’d know the difference to be honest as long as the toothpaste was covered in chocolate.

MrsDThomas · 04/01/2021 07:48

I hate them. Chocolate should taste like chocolate not toothpaste.

Anyhow, DH loves them and i bought him 2boxes in a nice 2020 commemorative tin.
