Is it just me or do they taste like crap this year?
My favourite thing at Christmas and I'm likely to throw the box away 😔

They’re only good for playing the game where you put one on your forehead and have to get it in your mouth without using your hands

caperplips · 03/01/2021 13:40

I was given after eight sticks in a tube box this year. I've never had them before but the chocolate was waxy & the ratio of chocolate to fondant was wrong. The chocolate didn't have that crisp snap I associate with actual after eights. I didn't like them at all.

dudsville · 03/01/2021 13:41

After eights are my go to crap chocolate - love them!

HarrietSchulenberg · 03/01/2021 13:51

Totally! Had some for my birthday and they were greasy and weird, and nowhere near as crisp and minty as they used to be. Really weren't nice, I threw them away in the end.

Winterwoollies · 03/01/2021 13:53

YWBU to just waste them and throw them in the bin.

Shame you're not near me! I bought a box of the 'gin & tonic' ones to try, I can't tell the difference & I'm not keen. There's too much fondant & they're not the & snappy. Disappointing.
goose1964 · 03/01/2021 13:55

Break them up and use to make chocolate mint vodka, remove some vodka from a bottle and replace it with the after eights. Keep in a warm place, shame daily, until the chocolate dissolves.

ArabellaScott · 03/01/2021 14:10

Bendicks are better. Or the Elizabeth thingummy ones.

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 03/01/2021 14:11

I got some of those seahorse shaped chocolates this year. They were shite! Ate 3 then palmed the rest off on my exH

Slackarse · 03/01/2021 14:40

@goose1964 also works putting the bottle (tightly sealed obviously) in the dishwasher. Other harder sweets like Turkish Pepper Liquorish are nice too. 🙂

funnylittlefloozie · 03/01/2021 14:45

They aren't properly minty! I used to love AEs, but they are no good any more. I much prefer Bendicks Bittermints, which taste of proper chocolate and actual mint!

DappledThings · 03/01/2021 14:47

Seem fine to me. But then there are lots of threads where people say all chocolate tastes like crap these days and I've never noticed any difference.

DuchessofDerbyshire · 03/01/2021 14:47

Do they still make them?

I thought they hit their peak when Abigail's Party was still showing for the first time.

How would you do this? By saying you cheap, greasy excuse for a dark chocolate over and over again or had you something else in mind?
WellTidy · 03/01/2021 14:56

I absolutely love After Eights. Had some in November, and they were fine, but I eat them dunked in a cup of coffee so I clearly have no taste.

Bettina500 · 03/01/2021 15:00

Yep me and DH both said this when we had a box over Christmas. They were smaller, not as minty and sort of chewy. Definitely not the same.

what do you do to shame them daily?
AlwaysLatte · 03/01/2021 15:15

Tell them they're not as good as they used to be.

They seemed fine to me, I didn't notice anything different.

wherewildthingsare · 03/01/2021 15:38

Most chocolate seems to be crappy.

NewjobOldme · 03/01/2021 15:39

I had the Lidl version this year. They were lovely.

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 03/01/2021 15:39

My sense of taste still isn't fully right since May, but I still polished of a box and had a couple of the G&T ones, all tasted the same to me.
Todays Chistmas choccy os a giant toblerone, white one, it's delicious.

AGnu · 03/01/2021 15:40

Try the Sainsbury's version, they're infinitely superior!
