Is it just me or do they taste like crap this year?
My favourite thing at Christmas and I'm likely to throw the box away 😔

Have you tried freezing them? They go amazingly chewy.

Taikoo · 03/01/2021 15:46

Palm oil.

TodgerStrunk · 03/01/2021 15:52

Yes, they were shit. They were so shit we opened a packet of mint matchmakers, which made the after eights taste even more fake minty. And it's not as if matchmakers have actually seen a real mint leaf.

ktld · 03/01/2021 16:02

I had the orange ones this year and they were amazing!

maddiemookins16mum · 03/01/2021 16:08

Asda’s own version of them (and their Turkish Delight thins) are far nicer.

NotSorry · 03/01/2021 16:20

Chocolate Oranges are now vile - I used to love them but they’ve got that waxy feel in your mouth now

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 03/01/2021 16:27

@ktld sorry but I thought the orange ones were vile!

Viviennemary · 03/01/2021 16:28

We bought some. Thry were vile.

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 03/01/2021 16:29

OP, we have thought the same about this years After Eights!

Will stick with Bendicts next year!

CoronaIsWatching · 03/01/2021 16:31

Never been a huge fan, always found them sickly

ToniTheDonkey · 03/01/2021 16:31

I agree, I bought a box and didn’t finish them as I didn’t enjoy them.

Palm oil! Another lovely confection ruined by cheapening of chocolate

itsmeagain76 · 03/01/2021 16:45

Yeah I said the exact same thing to my husband. Got a pack for a present, they tasted extremely weird and almost 'stale' as if they were out of date by a few years! but the date was fine. Wonder if its been a bad batch or something?
The texture was all wrong, no 'snap' to the chocolate, and just tasted off somehow.

NameChange84 · 03/01/2021 16:48

Stopped eating them a couple of years ago...it’s all about the Bendicks now Xmas Grin

DianaT1969 · 03/01/2021 16:48

Interesting, because they've been selling them for £1 at Sainsbury's since before Christmas. I bought some for my neighbours. Shame. Waxy and ruined as per Cadbury's. There's not much reason to buy chocolate anymore.

JedwoodDeadwood · 03/01/2021 16:49

I haven't opened ours yet, but I agree that Bendicks are much better. I love it when I get the mint collection Xmas Wink

Bookworming · 03/01/2021 16:49

Not what they used to be!

AuntyMabelandPippin · 03/01/2021 16:49

I didn't get any this year. I always get given a packet. I'll just have to go and buy my own to see...

Theluggage15 · 03/01/2021 17:11

I’d forgotten I’d bought after eights for Christmas until I saw this thread, so thank you!

I’ve gone off a lot of chocolate in recent years, Cadburys used to be my favourite but literally makes me feel sick now, we had a box of Heroes and I couldn’t taste anything but a greasy flavour. I tend to eat Hotel Chocolat stuff and Green and Blacks. I think it must be the palm oil that ruins the taste, will try the After Eights later and hope for the best.

earthyfire · 03/01/2021 17:12

I love after eights, didn't notice anything different about them, I stick them in the fridge so they are always quite chewy.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 03/01/2021 17:14

Can't say I've noticed a difference in the ones we've just eaten well mainly me Xmas Blush.

Bookworming · 03/01/2021 17:14

Now that's a very good idea!

MrsFHolmes · 03/01/2021 17:20

Bendick's Bittermints are the most delicious of all mint chocolates. You will never need to hurl insults at them or shame them.

CovidCarol · 03/01/2021 17:30

@lalaroo

I didnt buy them this year, went with matchmakers mint instead. They're equally as nice and about £1
Urgh no. They've ruined matchmakers too. They are sticky now fgs, sticky Xmas Envy
