I've resigned, manager wants it secret, I don't

Exactly that really, I've resigned from my job end day was 31st December '20 but due to the nature of the business I've agreed to stay until 31st January '21 to help with transition. My manager has been calling people into the board room and telling them individually that I'm leaving and telling them not to tell anyone!
I am happy that I am leaving but this 'cloak and dagger' telling people has really annoyed me. I am part of the senior management team and in my opinion an email should have been sent out detailing my end date. I am quite angry about this stupidness

What's all the secrecy for?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 03/01/2021 09:44

Thats a bit weird. At least youre leaving!

Belleende · 03/01/2021 09:45

Tell her if a communication hasn't been sent by x you will start telling people yourself, as you want to say your goodbyes.

AlwaysCheddar · 03/01/2021 09:46

Tell people you’re leaving or it seems like you’re being sacked.

Mummadeeze · 03/01/2021 09:48

It is v annoying. People just disappear where I work from time to time and I would much prefer things to be transparent. Of course people will want to know and say goodbye!

Taikoo · 03/01/2021 09:49

Are you a teacher?

TheSilentStars · 03/01/2021 09:50

It sounds a very gossipy place presuming they are all telling you what he's saying.
How exhausting.

Alexandernevermind · 03/01/2021 09:50

Does she already have someone else in mind for your job, and is trying to stop others applying?

LittleBearPad · 03/01/2021 09:52

Maybe she’s just saying that until everyone she wants to tell personally knows then there’ll be an email.

People gossip - sooner or later everyone will know anyway.

Polly111 · 03/01/2021 09:53

I would ask your manager why it’s a secret. You need to let everyone know then you can say your goodbyes. I would send an email round everyone, it’s not like you can get in trouble for it especially now you’re leaving.

I agree it makes it look like you’ve done something wrong and you’ve been encouraged to resign if there’s no announcement.

KatherineJaneway · 03/01/2021 09:54

This ^^

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 03/01/2021 09:55

Weird. Just start telling everyone yourself. Good luck in your future

Yeahnahmum · 03/01/2021 09:56

Send an email out non the less. And tell people. Otherwise he might end up telling people you'd been fired...

MatildaonaWaltzer · 03/01/2021 09:57

Take control of the narrative if it’s not a public announcement- too much scope for different versions of “she’s sacked “ this way. Are you going to a competitor?

NoOneCaresInRealLife · 03/01/2021 10:01

I have started telling people especially my seasonal team who I recruit- I mentioned to them that I would only be able to give them a work reference in my current role up to the end of the month.
For me leaving is a good thing and this is tarnishing it.

OP posts:
sueelleker · 03/01/2021 10:05

He's not hoping to persuade you to stay is he? And thinks if no-one knows you're leaving that you won't?

NoOneCaresInRealLife · 03/01/2021 10:05

Are you going to a competitor

Not at all, I'm having time with my family. No job lined up

This. I'd say 3 weeks is a minimum.

I have had this happen to me and yes it does tarnish it. Try and compartmentalize it.

Burnthurst187 · 03/01/2021 10:06

So your manager is telling everybody individually and also telling them not to tell anybody

Erm, they haven't thought this through very well have they

Calmandmeasured1 · 03/01/2021 10:09

Are you sure your manager is telling people you have resigned? It just occurred to me they might be telling people you are leaving but not that you have resigned. It"s as if he wants the staff to think he served notice on you.

I would tell him I don't understand the secrecy, don't like it and it makes me question his motives. I would give my boss until 10 a m. on Monday morning to run an email past me, that would then be sent to everyone, subject to my approving the contents of it. If that isn't acceptable to him, I would email everyone myself, explaining the circumstances, and would then leave immediately. No transition period.

Ginfordinner · 03/01/2021 10:14

I find it interesting that half the posters have assumed the manager is female and the other half male.

nosswith · 03/01/2021 10:17

Why are you in an office anyway and not wfh. Your manager calling people into an office is irresponsible.

Unless you are in New Zealand or somewhere else where prompt action means normal life can largely resume.

Sup1979 · 03/01/2021 10:18

When you say you’ve agreed to work until 31/01

Is that not just your notice period?

Sup1979 · 03/01/2021 10:20

Oh sorry I see now

Classed as essential service - not retail.

My whole team would know why I have resigned and some have been visibly upset with my decision but understand anyway.
I wanted to leave 8 months ago but was persuaded to and agreed to stay to see covid through.
