I've accidentally joined 2 teaching unions - can I cancel?

Google is not telling me much.
For some reason I have both
NASUWT

And NEU

Coming out my account tomorrow.

I am a supply teacher and work is not amazing right now so I don't fancy paying almost £15 a month on these combined.

NASUWT is £8

NEU is £6

I cancelled my direct debit with NASUWT but now I think I shouldn't have done that.

It says online to email them if you're leaving the profession and want to cancel subscription and that subscriptions are non-refundable after cancelling.

Can I cancel my membership?
Also i've cancelled my direct debit so do I tell them?

They are two different points, you can cancel your membership whenever you like.

When did you pay for the subscription? Did you click on pay and then immediately realise you didn't want it and cancel, or was there a period of time in the middle?

Nooooan · 03/01/2021 02:43

The first payment for both is coming out tomorrow,
So it's a direct debit with both,

I remember 2020 getting forms for both in the post asking me to sign up and I must have had a mindblank and put my name down for both on seperate occasions.

I'm an NQT so last year was free for me with NASUWT

Of course you can cancel your membership, but doing so on a weekend we hen the DD is about to come out is rather last minute. Contact them on Monday. You’ve already had this info from google.

Nooooan · 03/01/2021 02:47

The payment is coming out anyway on Monday, I don't mind paying that as I made the mistake, but don't fancy paying for both throughout the year

Just email them on Monday. There’s no obligation to be a member.

Nooooan · 03/01/2021 02:51

Do I have to give a reason for leaving? Or do I just say
"I would like to cancel membership as I no longer require the union's services"
And then provide my union number?

Just tell them the truth that you joined one organisation in error and you are cancelling membership with them.

Also check the rate you are paying with the one you stay with. Many have sliding scales depending on earnings, so if you aren't working much, you can legitimately pay a lower rate.

Email NASUWT to inform them you've cancelled your direct debit as of what ever date and that you are stating that your membership therfore should be considered nulled as of that date.
