It’s just me, so would I BU to say fuck cooking, throw caution to the wind and have hot chocolate and a picky tea?

Considering how much time, money and effort goes on food over the Christmas/NYE period I find it interesting that most people prefer picking at odds and ends! I like to make a guzzinter soup, whatever's not actually rotten guzzinter the pot for the soup!
Last night I managed to leave a piece of wild Alaskan salmon out of the freezer when I was getting tomorrows slab of beef out, had it tonight, it was bliss! I'd also bought a big cheesecake for tomorrow, I've had a slice, cut up the rest and rearranged it artfully on a plate to show even gaps.

ElDanglio · 02/01/2021 20:14

OP did you have any dingos within your picky bits?

TheScurrilousFunge · 02/01/2021 20:19

@hansgrueber (amazing username) Do you have to share the cheesecake?

ShaunaTheSheep · 02/01/2021 20:23

Love making up a ‘plate’ just for me. I had a late lunch of Stilton and Wensleydale with cranberries, balanced variously on crackers, apple slices and Christmas cake.

Made lasagne from scratch for dinner though, also yum.

Yes, sadly, family to lunch tomorrow! I may need to rearrange it further before I go to bed though.

Cheeringmeup · 02/01/2021 20:34

@TheScurrilousFunge

What is a 'ding' meal?!
It's a microwave ready meal - microwave "dings" when it's ready. We did this tonight 😊
RomaineCalm · 02/01/2021 20:58

@AlwaysLatte

Saturdays is ding meals OK, new question: ding meals, anyone?
Is that the same as a poppity ping dinner?

We have 'mix up' rather than 'picky bits' but both are good.

ElDanglio · 02/01/2021 21:01

Romaine

It is the same, except that it's specifically microwaved dingo and chips

Twelveisthebestnumber · 02/01/2021 21:31

We have Iffits. Iffits in the fridge / freezer / cupboard it's on the plate. Normally involves some kind of fabulousness like onion rings with gherkins, fish fingers, crisps, cake, cold cuts, cold roasties, frozen cheesecake and shed loads of cheese with random chutneys to get rid of them. Normally have Iffits every few months to empty the freezer when I start new diet!

MaintainTheMolehill · 02/01/2021 21:39

We have this but we call it a picnic dinner! Breadsticks, grapes, coldmeats, cold pasta salad crisps - all perfect for a picnic.

Lisibeth81 · 02/01/2021 21:48

'Picky' makes me think of someone picking their nails/toenails/teeth etc and making that horrible clicky noise while they're at it.

I'd call it a picnic dinner or a mishmash dinner or a leftovers dinner, or just say 'I'm having XYZ for dinner tonight'.. anything but 'picky tea/bits'!

DitherFlicker · 02/01/2021 21:50

Sorry, I don't think I could stomach a 'picky tea'. Would have to call it a buffet! Does it come from a particular region?

GoodQueenAlysanne · 02/01/2021 21:50

It's just me tonight too, so dinner was ham and cream cheese bagels (with a lot of chopped spring onion), and an entire pack of hot doritos (and 5 different types of dip).

GoodQueenAlysanne · 02/01/2021 21:51

*by pack I mean one of those big share bags

TiggerOfThigh · 02/01/2021 21:53

@ElDanglio

Andcall I want picky to be unbanned!

It's sums up living my best life for me!

Me too!!!

Oh for this that like the cooked cheese thingies in pots.... Morrison's do a fab one with Davidstow cheese with chorizo and jalapeños

TheGlitterFairy · 03/01/2021 09:10

Love this - though I call it a “lounge picnic” 😋

ElDanglio · 03/01/2021 10:43

So to take it to the next level, what would a picky breakfast look like?

Ladylimpet · 03/01/2021 10:50

Picky is definitely not just a Mumsnet thing.... my boyfriend calls it a picky tea (we're having it tonight haha). And I'd be very, very surprised if he's on here.

Pukkatea · 03/01/2021 10:55

It's a snacky tea, not a picky tea!

Food of the gods.

TheScurrilousFunge · 03/01/2021 12:26

@ElDanglio

So to take it to the next level, what would a picky breakfast look like?
Lots of small bowls of different cereals? And some random bacon.
JillofTrades · 03/01/2021 12:28

Picky bits just sounds all sorts of wrong.

ElDanglio · 03/01/2021 12:31

Scurrilous that sounds wonderful, maybe a yoghurt and a sausage too?

And quiche

TiggerOfThigh · 03/01/2021 13:11

@ElDanglio

So to take it to the next level, what would a picky breakfast look like?
Quiche, cheese savouries, mince pies and a banana

OP that sounds an excellent array of picky bits for breakfast!

You've inspired me for lunch, we have cheeses and various crackers in plus cherry tomatoes and chutney and I'll add some crisps
