Why didn’t I know about this cleaning trick with dishwasher tablets?

Cleaning the oven last night, discussing whether we should just put the glass door in the bag with the metal bits even though the instructions says not to. OH suggested I googled to see what t’internet said.

Up came a MN post from 2016, suggesting you use a hard powder, unwrapped dishwasher tablet dipped in water. We tried it and it was amazing. The stuff just came off. Also takes the gunk off the kitchen cupboards and tiles next to the hob. I’ve been wondering round the kitchen with a tab wondering what else it will clean.

I’m a fair age, well versed in various cleaning tips and tricks, how did I not know about this? Neither did my mum. Is this actually really well known? And why hasn’t some bright manufacturing spark come up with an actual cleaning product like this?

Any suggestions for cleaning my log burner door? It's clear brown inside, not soot, that's come off, recall trying WD40, this could be the residue.

Oven mate available from Lakeland. I have a self clean oven but the pyrolitic function does not clean the oven shelves, which have to be removed beforehand, or the glass in the door. I use ‘just for racks’ for the shelves, also from Lakeland, which you soak in a bag. Keep turning the bag every half hour and after three hours they come out with only minimal cleaning off necessary. The glass in the door comes up sparkly clean if you paint on the Lakeland oven mate with the brush provided. Leave the door open - flat - and wipe off when you see the dirt turn a liquid brown. For really baked on dirt a couple of applications may be necessary. It really works.

There are specific products for the loo - look like giant oversize asprin I call them loo fizzers - so not mix with other cleaning products though

They are cheap as well

For log burner doors there is a specific product as well - its very caustic though as basically you are dealing with tar - you will need heavy duty rubber gloves not marigolds. You need to make sure you have good dry wood to burn as this then is much reduced (so not for e.g. pine or rubbish wood but good kiln dried if you can ash beech oak mix

I have used the dishwasher trick a few times but I do put the glass in the bag with the metal shelves. I also put in my glass casserole dish and wash really well afterwards, good as new!

I’ve tried this trick a few times, not impressed as it takes forever, doesn’t really do the job.

I find the pink stuff (in the bottle) on a metal scourer brilliant, jobs done in five minutes.
Oven shelves stick them in dishwasher, then when dishwasher is done transfer to sink of soapy water, use scouring sponge and all the Burnt on crap just falls off. Again only takes 10 minutes.

Try this: make a ball of scrunched-up newspaper, spit on it then dip it in some (cold) ashes from the bottom layer of the wood burner and use to scrub the inside of the glass. You’ll need a layer of newspaper under the open door obvs.
DH swears by it and I can corroborate, it comes up good as new👍🏼

All you need is what was suggested by mummyhat: newspaper, water and ashes from the fire. It was part of the manufacturer's instructions for my log burner.

Having said that, I only burn dry hardwood and I clean the glass after every burn because I like to see the fire.

I bought a potting tray from the garden centre to soak my oven shelves in. Just a bit of washing up liquid, soak for an hour, use a wire scourer. It’s the best way I have found to clean the shelves. I also rate Elbow Grease for the glass door and very carefully use a glass scraper on any hard to remove stains.

I wipe the oven, shelves, etc. while they are still very warm (hot in fact) with a plain damp cloth and all grease, food, grime comes off straight away. I haven't had to do a hard clean for ages.

You can clean your washing machine with a dishwasher tablet too. Just throw it in and run a hot cycle.

Take care with dishwasher tablets please. They're nasty things chemically so mind your eyes and skin in particular (especially as water is involved), rinse it off well wherever you've used it.

Thank you for log burner info, I will do the ashes thing tomorrow. I only use kiln dried wood, I think it may be WD40, I was spraying it on the hinges. Won't do that again!
